Situation: All R1100 models produced from calendar week 18 (April 28, 1997) onwards will be equipped with head gaskets of Multi-Layered Steel (MLS) technology. Service Information: The MLS cylinder head gasket can be used in place of all earlier gaskets, on all R1100 models, without any modifications. Part Number: MSL cylinder head gasket for all R1100 models. P/N: 11 12 1 341 173 Note: The MLS cylinder-head gasket is applicable to R1100 models only. Details: All R 850/R 1100 and K 1200 RS models produced from December 1997 have received a new clutch disc, manufactured by VALEO, and a new pressure plate (see applicable part numbers below). Earlier production for both series can be fitted with the new parts. However, due to changes in specifications (a thicker pressure plate, a thinner clutch disc), the new VALEO clutch disc is not compatible with the old pressure plate. In this application, the new clutch disc and pressure plate must be replaced as a pair. Series Production: R 850/R1100 models: Starting with December 1997 production. K 1200 RS: Starting with December 1997 production. Problem: Engine surges at constant speed. Difficult to adjust and balance the left and right throttle bodies. Cause: Differences in opening and closing of the throttle butterflies caused by friction in the throttle cable. Remedy: 1. Fit a low friction throttle cable. 2. Check the following to ensure optimum results: Ignition timing Spark plugs (FR 6DDC) type / condition (reference SI 2739 in Main Group 12) Valve clearances Correct Cat. code plug Check throttle housing inlet manifold for air leaks 3. Synchronize the throttle butterflies as illustrated on the attached procedure. Note: Make sure there are no obstructions in the vacuum stub pipe prior to connecting the Synchro tool. BMW Poly-V Belt – R 1100 Models

Information: In an effort to reduce service volume, a maintenance-free ribbed Poly-V belt was adopted on all R1100 models from engine number 38946130 onwards (09/94 production onwards). This belt does not need to be retentioned (even at the 600 mile service). The old belt required replacement every 24,000 miles. The new style belt is to be replaced every 36,000 miles. Use the same torque procedure as the old belt. Replacement of an old style belt with the new maintenance free belt requires the use of the new parts below: Parts Kit: 12 31 1 342 086 (kit consists of the following) In addition to the Poly-V belt, the following parts were also changed: 1. Top pulley new: steel old: Aluminum 2. Bottom pulley new no spot welds: old: steel w/three spot welds on front 3. Belt new: Ribbed, printing on belt (1342059 Fa. Dayco) or (1341779 Fa. Conti) Slight squeaking may be heard for a short time after a cold start when temperature is below 50°F. The belt should reach it’s correct operating tension soon after the start up. The belt only needs retentioned if the slight squeaking does not stop after warm up.

cause: Gears are not correctly and fully engaged. The edges of the shift dogs and shift gears are rounded. Solution: Beginning with the 1997 model year, a modified set of gears has been introduced in production. Service Remedy: Installation of tolerance-optimized gears and shift forks is now possible. Parts: The installation of the optimized parts is to be done in accordance with the listing on the next page, based on the individual gearbox type and nature of complaint . We also recommend installation of the new “clean bearings” where applicable as noted. Clean Bearings: BMW has introduced deep-groove ball bearings which are sealed, therefore the bearings operate in their own lubricant rather than the gearbox lubricant. Clean bearings provide longer life expectancy and on some models provide the opportunity to extend gearbox lubrication intervals without reducing bearing life expectancy. Note: On a gearbox before the introduction of clean bearings, the layshaft roller bearing cannot be replaced with a ball bearing, since the ball bearing’s outer diameter is larger and the layshaft is longer. On the input shaft, we recommend always using the new ball bearing instead of the tapered roller bearing. Caution: New Shimming Procedure!

Install an oil relief valve PN 11 51 1 342 248 into the oil system (item #11 below). This valve was installed in production since black engine number 41956271, and silver engine number 41959303. This valve allows the oil in the cooling circuit to return to the crankcase when the engine is shut off. This will make it easier to determine the ngine oil level, and reduce the possibility of engine oil over-fill. Install new FR 6 DDC spark plugs, part number 12 12 1 342 125. Follow the procedures in the riders manual during start-up and running-in. Do not start the engine until you are ready to go for the road test. Don’t warm up the engine by letting it idle. Please advise the customer to review the starting, and running-in procedures in the Rider’s Manual. Please advise the customer of the 10w30 or 10w40 mineral based oil for the running-in. Also advise him/her not to top up the oil until it reached the minimum oil level as shown in the Rider’s Manual. Topping off prior to the minimum mark can create the illusion of additional oil consumption. This will be covered under the terms of the BMW Motorcycle Limited Warranty (one time only). the maintenance schedules of the R 1150 GS, R 1150 R, R 1150 RS, R 1150 RTand R 1150 RT-CHP have been revised to include the one-time retensioning of the poly-Vbelt as part of the 6,000 mile service. The modified “retensioning”procedure is described below. Note: The special tensioning nut, BMWspecial tool number12 3 551, is required for this adjustment. This special tool is included in the initial equipment package forthe R 1150 RS. In the case of motorcycles that have alreadycovered 6,000 miles, and on which the poly-Vbelt was not retensioned as part of the 6,000 service, this adjustment must be performed as part of the 12,000 mile, ornext scheduled/annual service PolyVbelt tensioning instructions: 1) Remove front engine cover. 2) Undo nut (2) and screw on tensioning nut, BMWspecial tool 12 3 551. 3) Loosen the alternatormounting bolts (3,4). 4) Using a torque wrench, togetherwith BMWspecial tool 12 3 551, preload the polyVbelt to 8 Nm and hold this adjustment. 5) Tighten the upper retaining nut (4), then remove the torque wrench from the adjusting screw. 6) Tighten all screws and nuts 7) Install front cover. GEORGE EDWARDS, 43 GEORGE runs www.rtrider. co.uk, a website dedicated to BMW RT owners. He owned an 1150 for four years, covering nearly 50,000 miles, and is already up to 6000 miles on the new 1200RT. PERFORMANCE Paul: “The new model feels smoother straight away. It fires quickly, the throttle is lighter and the engine feels more responsive. On the move it just gets up and goes, and it really thrives above 5000rpm. At first I was arriving at corners much quicker than I realised – and two-up performance is a revelation compared to the 1150.” John: “I’m not that impressed with the new model. The 1150 would cruise at 5000rpm-plus like a turbine. By comparison, the new 1200 feels very harsh above 4400rpm in top. The 1200 has more power, but lacks the low down grunt that the older bike had. However, once you rev it there’s noticeably more power. “Fuel consumption varies from 58 to 46 miles to the gallon, depending on the terrain and my right hand.” George: “I always ride two-up with the wife, and usually fully loaded, so the extra power is really noticeable. There’s much more punch out of corners, compared to the old 1150 which felt a bit sluggish. “With the new bike there’s a surge of power, especially above 6000rpm, but there’s still plenty of low down grunt, too. It also means that you don’t have to change down the gearbox so often. On the old 1150 I used to drop down to fifth gear on A and B roads, as it didn’t have the grunt for overtaking in top. The new 1200 is far better, I just leave it in top most of the time.” RIDING Paul: “The 1200′s seat is slightly higher than the 1150, but the new bike is still easier to manoeuvre at low speeds and the top heavy feeling has virtually gone. “The back brake is also improved, and the front feels more progressive than the 1150 – but I wouldn’t say it was better, only different. The suspension takes care of rougher surfaces in a more gentle way and it’s better two-up, too – less likely to ground out. There’s been many a time when we’ve scraped the 1150′s centrestand during fast cornering.” John: “The weight reduction has made the new bike easier to ride, especially on back roads. However, on long fast sweepers it doesn’t feel as planted as the old 1150. “Low speed handling is much better on the new bike and the rear brake is much better as well. I hated the old linked-brake system – it was too sharp, a nightmare in a gravelly car park two-up. The non-linked brakes on the new bike are far better. “The low beam is also much better

Status indicators If the motorcycle covers long dis- tancesinthe course of the year, under certain circumstances it might be necessary to have it serviced at a date in advance of the forecast due date. If the countdown distance to the odometer reading at whichaservice will be due is less than 1000 km, the distance is counted down in steps of 100kmandisshown briefly after the Pre-Ride Check completes. If service is overdue, the due date or the odometer reading at which service was due is accom- paniedbythe’General’warning light showing yellow. The word “Service”remains permanently visible. If the sevice-due indicator appears more than a month before the service date, the date saved in the instrument cluster must be adjusted.
