Installation 1. Remove upper screws that attach the chrome headlamp nacelle to the front forks. 2. See Service Parts illustration. Attach the upper docking bushings (22) using washer (21) and mushroom head screws (20) Use Loctite 242 (blue) on screw threads. Torque screws to 19 ft-lbs (25.8 Nm). 3. Remove lower screws that attach the chrome headlamp nacelle to the front forks. 4a. For vehicles equipped with the Chrome Headlamp Nacelle, attach the lower docking bushing (22) using washer (21) and button head screw (23). 4b. For vehicles equipped with the Street Stalker Headlamp Nacelle, attach the lower docking bushing (22) using washer (21) and button head screw (24). Installing/Removing Windshield 1. Carefully lock bottom windshield assembly jaws into grooves of the lower rubber docking bushings. 2. Hook the top windshield assembly jaws into grooves of the upper rubber docking bushings. 3. Firmly press the windshield into place until seated on docking bushings. 4. To remove windshield, grab windshield edges on each side of center brace and firmly pull windshield loose from docking bushings. 1 WARNING Carefully inspect windshield upon completion of installation. Be sure windshield mounting does not restrict full left or full right movement of front fork assembly. Restricted movement could affect handling, resulting in personal injury. If restriction does occur, adjust windshield as needed until proper clearance is obtained. Have experienced Harley-Davidson service personnel correct any problems before riding with this accessory installed. 1 CAUTION Check mounting hardware periodically. Never ride with loose mounts. A loose mounting causes extra stress on all other mounts, as well as the windshield itself, and could result in premature failure of either or both. 1 CAUTION Do not clean Lexan®polycarbonate in hot sun or high temperature. Powdered, abrasive or alkaline cleanser will damage the windshield. Never scrape the windshield with a razor blade or other sharp instruments because permanent damage will result. Sunlight reflections off of the inside curvature of a windshield can, at certain times of the day, cause extreme heat build-up on motorcycle instruments. Exercise care in parking. Park facing the sun, place an opaque object over the instruments, or adjust the windshield to avoid reflections. Harley-Davidson windshields are made of Lexan®. Lexan®is a more durable and distortion-resistant material than other types of motorcycle windshield material, but still requires attention and care to maintain. • Do not use liquid windshield “protectors” on your windshield. Although they may work well on automobile safety glass, Harley-Davidson cannot ensure the results when used on Lexan®Harley- Davidson windshields. If you want to use a windshield protectant on your windshield, try Harley Glaze Polish and Sealant®. • Do not use benzine, paint thinner, gasoline, or other types of harsh cleaning agents on windshield. They will damage the windshield surface. • Do not use benzine, paint thinner, gasoline, lubricants (including Armorall), or other cleaning agents on the rubber bushings. They will damage the bushing surfaces

Installation SOLO SADDLE ONLY 1. Remove stock seat and grabstrap according to applicable Service Manual instructions. 2. Road King standard models . Remove and save the stock screws and seat mount bracket at the back of the rider solo seat. 2000 and later models . Remove the retainer washer from the stud plate and replace with two black retainer washers (2). Be careful not to allow stud plate to fall through the fender. 3. Road King standard models . Install stock solo seat mount bracket using two stock screws saved in Step 2. Road King Classic Custom models . Install solo seat mount bracket onto back of solo seat using bracket and screws included in Mount Kit Number 52903-01. 4. Install seat by sliding front of seat into seat holder bracket. Pull up on the nose of the seat to verify that the seat is securely installed. After installing seat, pull upward on front of seat to be sure it is in locked position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070a) 5. 1999 and later models . Install 1/4 in. star washers (6), spacers (4) and acorn nuts (3) onto rear mount studs. Torque to 72 in-lbs (8.13 Nm). 1998 and earlier models . Install 5/16 in. star washers (5) and 5/16-18 x 3/4 in. buttonhead screws (1) into stock mount nuts. Torque to 17 ft-lbs (23 Nm). SOLOAND PILLION 1. Remove stock seat and grabstrap according to applicable Service Manual instructions. Retain all hardware for later use. 2. Road King standard models . Remove and save the stock screws and seat mount bracket at the back of the rider seat. 3. Road King standard models. Install stock seat mount bracket onto new solo seat using two screws saved in Step 2. Road King Classic Custom models. Secure the rear mount bracket with stock mushroom nuts (10) and two 1/4 in. star washers (6). Torque to 72 in-lbs (8.13 Nm). 1998 and earlier Road King standard models . Install solo seat by sliding front of seat into holder bracket on bike. Secure the rear mount bracket with the two mushroom screws (11) and two 5/16 in. star washers (5). Torque to 17 ft-lbs (23 Nm). Road King Classic Custom models . Mount Kit Number 52903-01 is required for installation. Install solo seat (7) by sliding front of seat into holder bracket on bike. • 1999 and later models . Using Mount Kit Number 52903-01, secure the rear mount bracket with the two mushroom nuts (10) and two 1/4 in. star washers (6). Torque to 72 in-lbs (8.13 Nm). • 1998 and earlier models . When I first started working on bike many years ago, I learned the danger of stripping the heads of Philips screws when removing or installing them on motorcycles. I remember the two worst screws were the casing side-cover aluminum screws and carburetor bowl screws. I think I tried every method of screw removal after they were stripped. Vice grips, better tipped screwdriver, hammer, drill, and other tools were used. One way I learned to remove stripped screws is to re-make the Philips head into a flathead screw. Cutting a slot in the top of the screw and then use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the screw. On some parts this technique can work, other parts and screws it may not. The Philips screws on the bottom of the V-Star carburetor bowls are VERY prone to stripping. In fact, I will not start a carburetor cleaning without new hex head screws to replace the original Philips bowl screws. Replace the bowl screws for yourself if you keep the bike, or for the next rider that will appreciate the hex-head screws when they clean the carburetors. Not many other parts on a V-Star have screws that are prone to stripping. This documentation is to help riders with motorcycle maintenance. Some riders will find themselves with the problem of removing stripped screws. A carburetor cleaning can quickly double in time when you realize the hardest part of the job is removing bowl screws after they strip. And then realizing you do not have the replacement hex-head screws available and must now go to the hardware store.

Kit 53976-08 (XR1200 Passenger Upright Kit) is available for separate purchase. Contact your Harley-Davidson dealer for more information. Kit Contents See Figure 2 and Table 1. REMOVAL 1. Remove pillion and seat following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. 2. Remove the seat base following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. 3. See Figure 1. Remove the turn signal mounting screws (3) and discard. Allow the turn signal to hang by the harness until lower bracket installation. 4. Remove the rear fender support strut screws (6) and dis- card. INSTALLATION 1. See Figure 2. Install lower luggage rack mount bracket with screws (9), flat washers (10) and nuts (8). Bracket will mount around nut (Item 2 in Figure 1). Tighten to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) . 2. Install screws (7) and nuts (8) through the rear fender support strut and the lower luggage rack mount bracket. Tighten to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) . 3. Route the turn signal wire harnesses through the groove in the bracket. Install new turn signal mounting screws (11). Tighten screws to 3-5 ft-lbs (4-7 Nm) . 4. Install seat base following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. 5. Install upper luggage rack mount bracket (4) with original equipment seat base screws in the lower holes (A). Do not tighten at this time. 6. Install screws (3) into slotted holes in the upper luggage rack mount bracket (4) and flange nuts (6). Slide the upper bracket as far back in the slots as possible. Check to determine if the BMW system case mounts have been properly installed and that all fasteners and fittings are properly tightened. Inspect for signs of stress, fracture, bending, or other failure. If found, return the mounts to your dealer for replacement. Do not attempt to mount the BestRest FitKit if the BMW system case saddlebag mounts are damaged, defective, or improperly installed. If the BMW luggage rack is in place, remove it from the system case mounts. Removal is accomplished by removing the 4 torx screws, 2 on each side. Use the torx wrench from your toolkit. Once the stock “luggage” rack is removed, you’ll be mounting the Roadster FitKit using those same 4 holes. You’ll be replacing the stock torx head screws with the longer socket head hex screws found in the parts package. Place a flat washer on the 6mm screws and start the screws into the 4 holes. The 4 screws may need some gentle help to get them thru the holes. Work patiently and do not use brute force! Once the screws have started in the holes, turn them clockwise with a hex wrench to help them pass thru the saddlebag mounts and the FitKit Plate. Place a flat washer and 6mm nylon locknut on the end of each screw and tighten the nuts <<<<>>>>. From the rear, lift up on the FitKit Plate and “wiggle” it up and down <<<>>> a few times to remove any tension between the FitKit Plate and the system case brackets. You’ll find a point where everything feels “neutral” and where the screws are aligned in their holes. Tighten the nuts fully. Use common sense and do not over-tighten. Do not use extensions on the hex wrench. As a final tightening technique, hold the hex wrench stationary while you tighten the nuts another ¼ turn, using the box wrench. From the rear, wiggle the FitKit Plate up and down again. If it’s loose, tighten the screws and nuts again. Repeat until the FitKit Plate is snug and secure between the bag mounts. Place a CargoRest over the top of the FitKit Plate. Installation is the same for all 3 models of CargoRest. Align the 5 holes shown in the photo with the holes in the FitKit Plate.

INSTALLATION NOTE Cover the fuel tank with a clean shop towel to prevent scratching. Damage to the finish could result. 1. Remove the two hex head cap screws and split lock- washers on the underside of the upper fork bracket that hold the currently installed risers in place. Discard the screws, but retain the lockwashers for re-assembly. Retain all additional hardware components that become dislodged from the riser when the screws are removed. 2. Remove and discard the four screws that fasten the currently installed handlebar upper clamp(s) to the risers. Remove and discard the clamp(s). Remove the handlebar from the risers, and carefully allow the handlebar to rest on the fuel tank. 3. Obtain the new slotted risers (1) and hex head cap screws (2) from the kit, and the split lockwashers and hardware components removed in Step 1. NOTE The upper cup washer (A) must be oriented with the flat side up , and the lower cup washer (D) with the flat side down . The ground wire (G) and internal tooth lockwasher (H) are mounted to the right-side riser. 4. Refer to Figure 1 for the correct orientation and reassembly sequence. Install the new risers onto the upper fork bracket using the saved hardware and new screws. Snug the riser screws, but do not fully tighten at this time. 5. Center the handlebar on the risers. To make sure that the handlebar is centered, verify that the knurled areas on the outboard side of each riser are equal. 6. Position the new handlebar upper clamps (3) from the kit, and install with new hex socket head screws (4). Snug the upper screws, but do not fully tighten. Improperly aligned handlebars can contact the fuel tank when turned to the left or right. Contact with the fuel tank can cause cosmetic damage. (00372a) 7. Slowly turn the front wheel to the full right fork stop and then the full left fork stop to be sure the handlebar does not contact the fuel tank. If contact occurs and the handlebars are properly centered, raise the handlebar angle as necessary until proper clearance is attained. 8. Tighten the upper handlebar-clamp screws as follows: a. Tighten the front screws to 12-15 ft-lbs (16-20 Nm) . b. Tighten the rear screws to 12-15 ft-lbs (16-20 Nm) . c. Tighten the front screws to 12-15 ft-lbs (16-20 Nm) . NOTE The gap between the upper clamps and the risers should be equal at the front and rear of the handlebar after tightening. 9. One at a time, remove the riser bolts installed in Step 4. Apply two drops of Loctite® 271 (Red) to the bolt threads and re-install. Tighten the riser bolts to 50-60 ft-lbs (68-81 Nm)

INSTALLATION NOTE See Figure 1. Be careful not to crack plastic fender lamp lens (2) or chrome plate when removing lens. 1. Remove fender lamp light lens (2) by placing screwdriver in slot in top of lens and carefully prying cover loose. Retain lens and gasket for later installation. 2. Installed Front fender Rail NOTE When installing fender rail (3), be sure fender rail supports are inside of fender. 3. Place fender rail (3) from kit into position, aligning the front bracket hole of rail with hole in front of fender (4). Fender rail supports will fit snugly inside fender. NOTE Be careful not to damage the fender lamp wire when securing front fender rail into place. 4. Use a magnet to place a 10-32 x 1/2 inch phillips screw through the hole in front fender and through front bracket hole of fender rail (3). 5. Loosely secure fender rail (3) to fender (4) with 1/2 inch flat washer and hex locknut. 6. On right side only, remove two hex socket head screws and nuts. Retain nuts for installation. 7. Replace original two socket head screws with 5/16-18 x 2 inch screws from kit. 8. For vehicles without caliper/rotor covers: On left side of fender (4) only, install a washer between rail (3) and fender for both screws. Replace original two hex socket head screws with 5/16-18 x 2 inch screws from kit. For vehicle with caliper/rotor covers: Do not replace hex socket head screw that supports caliper/rotor cover. On left side of fender (4), install a washer between fender (4) and rail (3) on screw that does not support the caliper/rotor cover (towards the front of the vehicle). Replace remaining hex socket head screw with 5/16-18 x 2 inch screw from kit. 9. Install four original nuts. 10. Tighten front bracket Phillips screw securely. Tighten four hex socket head screws to 14-18 ft-lbs (19-24 Nm). 11. Install gasket and fender lamp lens removed earlier

INSTALLATION NOTE Maximum saddlebag load is 10 lbs. (4.5 kg) for each bag. Do not exceed saddlebag weight capacity. Put equal weight in each bag. Too much weight in saddlebags can cause loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00383a) NOTE Saddlebag hangers must be mounted with the bend in the hanger facing out from the motorcycle. NOTE The saddlebags are symmetrical and can be mounted on either side. 1. See Figure 1. Remove the fender support cover screws from locations shown for mounting saddlebags. 2. Place lock washers (6) on two cap screws (5) and insert through the top holes of the saddlebag hanger. NOTE The FXSTC Does Not use narrow spacers (8) in Step 3 for the saddlebag installation. 3. With the cap screws in place on the hanger, place a wide spacer (7) followed by a narrow spacer (8) on each screw. 4. Thread the cap screws into the location of the original screws previously removed in Step 1 and tighten screws to 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) . 5. From the inside of the saddlebag install two button head screws (2) with washers (3) through the upper mounting holes in the saddlebag and the hanger. 6. On the backside of the hanger install hex nuts (4) to the screws from previous step and tighten to 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) . 7. Insert two button head screws through the lower two holes on the backside of the hanger and into the saddlebag. 8. From the inside of the saddlebag install washers and hex nuts to screws and tighten to 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) . 9. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for installation of the other saddlebag. Installation with Docking Points 1. If you choose to use the docking points from Kit 53930- 03, repeat the installation of previous Steps 1-8 and substitute the front and rear docking points for the spacers (7) in this Kit. You must use narrow spacers (8) from this kit for both the FLSTSB and the FXSTC when using the docking points. Install Reflectors

1. Remove the license plate. Remove the license plate holder assembly from the rear fender (three 8mm Allen bolts 5mm wrench). Remove the five 4mm Allen screws underneath the rear fender which secure the taillight/turn signal assembly to the rear fender (3mm wrench). As shown in photo #2, pull the taillight assembly out away from the fender, turn it over, place a towel or rag between the light and fender and allow it to rest on the fender. 2. Locate the supplied triangular license plate mounting block, two 8 x 20mm Allen screws with holes driiled thru and three rubber washers. Place the two Allen screws thru the upper holes in the block and the rubber washers over the screws on the backside of the block. Start the screws into the upper holes on the fender. Use one of the three screws removed earlier from the original mount in the remaining lower hole of the new block sliding the remaining rubber washer between the block and fender. Tighten all three Allen screws secure enough to compress the rubber washers (4-6 ft lbs.). 3. Locate the supplied license plate mounting plate and LED lights. Cut off the excess red and black wires at the end of the black loom or tube. Referring to photo (1) thread the wires of the LED lights thru the small holes in the mounting plate, peel the cover from the adhesive backing on the lights and press them firmly into place as shown. 4. Locate the three supplied ¼” x ½” flat head Allen screws. Hold the plate up to the mounting block installed earlier with the wires at the bottom of the plate. Thread the wires from the LED lights thru the holes in the upper bolts of the block. Install the plate onto the block using the three flat head screws being sure to keep the exposed wire behind he plate as short as possible and fitting into the slot or cut out at the edge of the block. Snug the screws and again check to see tat the wires are in the slot or cut out in the block and do not become pinched as the screws are tightened. Tighten the screws securely. 5. Where the wires from the taillight go thru the fender there is a grommet, pull this grommet out from the fender. Thread the wires from the LED lights thru the grommet with the other wires. Replace the grommet into the fender and remove any slack from the wires under the fender. Cut the LED wires off at 6″ past the grommet.

Replace the grommet into the fender and remove any slack from the wires under the fender. Cut the LED wires off at 6″ past the grommet. 6. Referring to photo (2) remove 2″ of the black tubing exposing the red and black wires on the LEDs. Locate the supplied brake/tail light dual function element (a red wire at one end with a red and orange wire at the other) and wire connectors. Cut all three wires on the dual element to 3″ long. Strip the end of the single red wire on the element and both of the red wires from the LEDs then connect them using one of the blue butt connectors. Connect the two black wires from the LEDs to any one of the black wires on the tail light or signals using one of the supplied splice connectors (place both black wires into one of the holes on the connector). Using the remaining splice connectors attach the red wire from the dual element to the yellow wire on the tail light and the orange wire to the blue wire on the tail light. Turn on the ignition and check that the LEDs are working both as tail and brake lights when the brakes are applied.
