If the clamp is installed incorrectly under the speed sensor, remove and reinstall the clamp and speed sensor correctly. Torque the bolts,. Torque: 12 N • m (1.2 kgf • m, 9 lbf • ft) If the speed sensor wire clamp for the front ABS speed sensor is installed incorrectly, the ABS speed sensor air gap may be out of specification. This does not affect ABS speed sensor operation, but the clamp should be installed correctly. Inspect and repair all affected units using the Inspection/Repair procedures listed below. Inspect all unsold units and customer units brought in for service. Position the motorcycle on a firm, level surface, in an area where there is enough room to safely lay it on its left side. 2. Remove the left side mirror by following the nstructions on page 2-7 of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the left engine side cover by following the nstructions on page 2-5 of the Service Manual. 4. Remove the antenna whip(s). 5. Remove the coolant reserve tank by fol- lowing the instructions on page 6-7 of the Service Manual. 6. Place thick, non-abrasive padding (such as furniture blankets) on the ground to protect the motorcycle when you lay it on its side. 7. Lock the handlebars to the RIGHT, using the ignition key. 8. Using two people, gently lay the motor- cycle down on its LEFT side on the pad- ding. The motorcycle will first rest on the wheels and left engine and saddlebag guards. Continue to lean the motorcycle to the left until it rests on the left handlebar end and left engine and saddlebag guards. The motorcycle should be laying on the padding, with its engine guard, saddlebag guard, and handlebar end resting on the padding – no painted parts should be con- tacting the padding. 9. Clean the frame crossmember with acetone. 10. Draw a line on each side of the grinding template (S0512) 30 mm from the for- ward edge, stopping  between the two arrows, as illustrated below. 11. Put this template on the frame and, using a fine-tipped felt marker (such as a Sharpie), draw a 30 mm line on both crossmember welds. Start this line at the forward edge of the grinding template and stop between the two arrows as shown in the illustration on the next page.Now remove the grinding template

Adjusting the position of the compression and rebound damping Rebound damping: -Turn in the adjusting screw 1 in a clockwise direction all the way to the stop. -Turn back the respective number of clicks in a counterclockwise direction. Compression damping, low speed: -Turn in the adjusting screw 2 in a clockwise direction all the way to the stop. -Turn back the respective number of clicks in a counterclockwise direction. Compression damping, high speed: -Turn in the adjusting screw 3 in a clockwise direction all the way to the stop. -Turn back the respective number of clicks in a counterclockwise direction. Adjusting the spring preload NOTE: the spring preload is the difference between the unloaded and preloaded length of the spring. -Tighten the adjusting nut 4 with the special tool T106 until you have the prescribed spring preload. -Tighten the lock screw on the adjusting nut Disassembling the shock absorber -Write down the spring preload. -Write down the rebound and compression damping settings, counting the clicks or number of turns while turning in a clockwise direction. -Unscrew all of the adjusting screws in a counterclockwise direction. -Clamp the upper part of the shock absorber in a vise as shown in the photo, using protective jaws. -Loosen the lock screw 1 (AH 4 mm), loosen the adjusting nut 2 using the special tool T106 3 and relieve the spring. 1. Inspect the motorcycle for a punch mark as described in Identification on page 2. If a punch mark is present no further action is necessary, return the unit to the customer. 2. Qualify the unit/customer as follows: •Is the tire on the motorcycle the original factory installed tire? •Is the air pressure loss more than three psi per month? Note: Refer to page 145 in the Owner’s Manual. “Even tires that are in good condition may lose one to two psi per month if not checked and adjusted regularly” . If the GL1800 meets the above qualifications, proceed with the repair procedure. 3. Place the motorcycle on a lift and secure it on the centerstand. 4. Remove the rear wheel as described on page 14-9 of the Service Manual. 5. Starting at the valve stem/balance mark area, carefully remove the rear tire from the wheel. Be sure to use plenty of commercially available tire lubricant on the inside and outside of both beads. 6. Carefully inspect the entire circumference of both tire beads. Inspect both the inside and outside of the bead for any distortion or injuries. • Upgrade Your Pre- 2002 FL Or FXR Rear Fork & Get Rid Of The Crappy & Dangerous (Cleve Blocks) & Replace Them With A Stable System. • R & R your Swing Arm, Belt Drive, Swing Arm Pivot Shaft, and Rear Wheel. The paragraphs below are a photo journey into the replacement of a FL or FXR swing arm. To upgrade the pre 2002 FL, here is a How-To on cheaply replacing the poor parts Harley stuck you with. Now – Let’s Get Er’ Done • Pre- 2002 had weak swing arms and are known to fail. The cleve blocks are the cause of “Rear Steer” or “Rear Fork Deflection”. Harley came up with a patch in 2002, using bearings. Because the pre 2002 transmissions have a 5/8″ mounting hole for the 5/8″ swing arm pivot shaft, a conversion unit has been made. No transmission removal for boring is necessary. Under no circumstances, do I recommend drilling out the transmission case with a hand drill. The drill will “wander” (drift)! • Solution: Go to either a trike shop/manufacturer, e-Bay, or shop and buy a new style swingarm. Harley made an additional upgrade in 2007, try and buy this type 2007 & above). If upgrading to a 2008, Harley use 25mm (smaller than 1″) axles & wheel bearings, you will have to use 25mm bearings. With that said, let’s get on with it. • In the case of a 2007 swingarm; buy and do not pay over $40 for the swing arm and axle. You must use the corresponding axle as a ¾” axle set-up is different (along with wheel bearings & spacers). You positively can not use a pre -2002 HD stock wheel because the wheel bearing spacer will fit into the wheel. Buy 2002 & above style wheels as they (9 spoke) are cheep. • You are going to have to either bore out your stock rear caliper bracket or better still, upgrade your whole rear brake to the new model & sell yours on e-Bay. • I recommend doing the following before hand and have it ready for installation; Remove bearings et al. from the 2002 & later swing arm via press. Bike Work: • Jack up your bike using a center jack. Secure the bike so it will not fall over. You can also use a motorcycle jack. I use a motorcycle dolly

ADJUSTING SPRING PRELOAD (STIFFNESS). NOTE: Shocks typically come set at their loosest (softest) setting. Adjustment range is approximately 4 full rotations. Step 1: Loosen preload adjustment locknut. (see fig. 1) Step 2: Using supplied special tool with a 3/8 ratchet, turn adjusting plate clockwise to stiffen preload & counter-clockwise to loosen preload. (see fig. 2) Step 3: Once preload has been set, lock down preload adjusting nut using blue (med strength) thread locker ADJUSTING RIDE HEIGHT. NOTE: Extending shock assembly lowers frame/fender height. Shortening shock assembly will raise frame/fender height. NOTE: Always check clearances during & after adjusting ride height. Step 1: Loosen ride height adjusting locknut. (see fig. 3) Step 2: Rotate end to desired height. Always leave at least 1 inch of threads engaged in the female threaded shaft. (see fig. 4) Step 3: Lock down ride height adjusting locknut using blue (med strength) threadlocker. (see fig. 5) Step 4: After adjusting ride height on both shocks, verify that they are the same length by measuring from their mounting points. (see fig. 6)

Secure the center stand to one of the forward crash bars with a ratchet strap to keep vehicle from rolling forward and off the center stand. Be sure that the vehicle is laterally stable as well. From the manufacturer, your Honda Gold Wing brake system utilizes both front and rear brakes when the foot brake is applied. In order to insure safe operation of your Gold Wing when converted to a Champion Sidecars Trike, the brake system must be modified to isolate the front and rear brake systems from each other. Once modification is complete, four of the six pistons in the front calipers operate only when the hand brake lever is applied. The rear brakes operate only when the foot brake pedal is applied. The diagrams below outline the difference between the GL1800 OEM brake system and the system as modified by the Champion Sidecars Trike Conversion Kit.

1. Remove seat. 2. Disconnect battery. 3. Remove handlebar cover on top-center of handlebar. 4. Remove left-side clutch-bracket assembly. This exposes an access hole on the underside of the handlebar. 5. Pass the end of the Signal® mirror wires through one of the small holes located on the underside of the clutch-bracket assembly housing. 6. Take piano wire/fish tape and insert at the access hole located on the underside of the handlebar to the center of the handlebar (center handlebar cover removed). 7. Fasten the end of the Signal® mirror wires to the piano wire/fish tape and pull through the handlebars to the center opening. 8. Pull excess wire through the handlebars leaving approximately 2″ of extra wire at the mirror side. 9. Re-assemble clutch-bracket assembly allowing the Signal® mirror wire to wrap around the outside edge of the cover assembly into the underside access hole. Secure Signal® mirror with enclosed 1.5″ long 5/ 16 ” – 24 Allen head bolt. 10. Loosen throttle assembly side and slide back to expose access hole. DO NOT REMOVE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY. Proceed to pass the Signal® mirror wire through the handlebar at the opposite side and re-assemble the throttle assembly. 11. Run both sets of wires under the fuel tank along the topside of the frame to the battery compartment. 12. Connect both black wires to the enclosed ring connector for connection to the battery ground terminal. 13. Locate the male/female electrical connector that is located behind the battery. This wiring assembly is for your tail lamp assembly for braking and turning (see photo). 14. Make sure the harnesses are routed securely to the wire connectors and enough slack is left for splicing or soldering. Cut the heat shrink into (4) equal pieces (approx. 2″ each). 15. Slide the heat shrink over the passenger side Signal® mirror wire. Solder the Right Signal® mirror wire to the Brown wire. Slide the heat shrink over to cover the soldered area. Heat the shrink tube into place with a heat shrink gun or hair dryer. 16. Repeat sliding the heat shrink over the driver side Signal® mirror wire. Solder the Left Signal® mirror wire to the Purple wire. Slide the heat shrink over to cover the soldered area. Heat the shrink tube into place with a heat shrink gun or hair dryer. 17. Connect ground and positive battery connections. 18. Re-install seat.

1. Pump the rear brake pedal four times. •If the brake pedal feels spongy, bleed the brake system per the Service Manual. After verifying proper brake system operation, proceed to step 2 below. •If the brake pedal does not feel spongy, proceed to step 2 below. 2. Place the motorcycle on its side stand, with the handlebars in the full left position . Lock the handlebars. 3. Place a scissor jack directly under the left front brake caliper as shown in the illustration. To avoid damage to the caliper, place a protective piece of rubber (such as a piece of inner tube) between the caliper and the jack. Wind up the jack until the front wheel is approximately 15 mm off the ground. 4. Measure the distance from the secondary master cylinder piston mounting bolt to the edge of the secondary master cylinder body (rod length of the secondary master cylinder). Record this measurement . • If the measured length is 30.3 mm, replace the PCV per the Service Manual. (This length indicates the unit’s secondary master cylinder is fully stroked, which means there is no hydraulic brake pressure acting on the PCV.) After replacing the PCV, proceed to the IDENTIFICATION section of this Service Bulletin. •If the measured length is longer than 30.3 mm , proceed to step 5 below. • INSPECTION/REPAIR PROCEDURE Record this measurement. Pump the rear brake pedal four times.

Measure the distance again from the secondary master cylinder piston mounting bolt to the edge of the secondary master cylinder body (rod length of the secondary master cylinder). •If the measurement has decreased more than 1 mm from the measurement you recorded, proceed to step 7 below. •If the measurement is within 1 mm of the measurement you recorded, the PCV is OK. Proceed to the IDENTIFICATION section of this Service Bulletin. 7. Check the PCV for leakage. • If the PCV is leaking , replace the PCV per the Service Manual. After replacing the PCV, proceed to the IDENTIFICATION section of this Service Bulletin. • If the PCV is not leaking , you must diagnose the brake system problem before proceeding. After you have diagnosed and repaired the brake system, proceed to the IDENTIFICATION section of this Service Bulletin. NOTE: Any brake system problem not related to the PCV that is found while performing this Service Bulletin is not covered by this Safety Recall. If the motorcycle’s original factory warranty is still in effect or under HPP, file a normal warranty claim. If the unit is outside its factory warranty period or HPP coverage, contact TechLine for goodwill consideration. 8. Verify proper front and rear brake operation by pumping the front brake lever and rear brake pedal before riding the motorcycle
