1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Grasp the sides of the electrical caddy (located next the ignition coil) and pull outward to remove. 3. Remove the relay and fuse panels from the electrical caddy. a. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot under each fuse and relay panel. b. Using a screwdriver, disengage the panel from the electrical caddy. 4. Disconnect the main fuse connector from the electrical caddy a. Remove the main fuse from the connector b. Insert small screwdrivers into the slots on each side of the main fuse c. Depress the tabs of the main fuse connector to disengage it from the electrical caddy

Disconnect the TSM/TSSM connector. 6. Slide the data link connector towards the front of the motorcycle to disengage it from the electrical caddy. 7. Disconnect the ignition control module connector. 8. Disconnect the ignition coil connector and spark plug cables from the coil. 9. Remove the electrical caddy fasteners (3 total). 10. Remove the wiring from the electrical caddy. 11. Remove the fasteners securing the factory ignition control module from the electrical caddy. 12. Installation of the Digital Ignition Module is the reverse of removal. 2.2 Touring Models 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the right saddlebag. 3. Gently pull the side cover from the frame downtubes (no tools required). 4. Depress the external latches and use a rocking motion to remove the electrical connector from the ignition control module. 5. Remove the two socket screws to detach the ignition control module from the electrical bracket. 6. To install the Digital Ignition Module, install and tighten the socket screws to 50-60 in-lbs . The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. 2.3 Softail Models 1. Remove the seat. 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 3. Remove the two screws to free the ignition control module from the mounting bracket. 4. Depress the external latches and use a rocking motion to remove the electrical connector from the ignition control module. 5. To install the Digital Ignition Module, install and tighten the socket screws to 15-21 in-lbs . The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM A 12 volt electrical system is required. Check that the charging system is working properly and not producing over 16 volts. DISTRIBUTOR CLAMP A 1966-69 style distributor clamp (original or aftermarket) is required. MODULE This distributor uses an Accel Single/Dual Fire Ignition module part number 35496. See the enclosed form “Instruction Sheet Single/Dual Fire” for instructions on wiring, adjusting the rev limiter and selecting an advance curve. COIL(S) A coil(s) with a total primary resistance of 2 to 4 ohms is recommended. INSTALLATION Step 1 Turn the ignition switch to the off position. Rotate the engine until it is on the compression stroke for the front cylinder. Continue to rotate the engine until the TDC mark is visible through the timing hole. (see repair manual if necessary). Step 2 Remove the existing distributor if still in the engine. Step 3 Remove the two button head screws from the top of the Mallory distributor. Pull the top cover off the distributor. Remove the two hex standoffs and pull the module and upper housing off the distributor base assembly. Adjust the switches on the module for the desired advance curve and rev limit. FORM 1627 07/08 Step 4 Install the distributor base assembly in the engine with the screw holes and shutter wheel positioned as shown in Figures 1 and 2. It may be necessary to pull the distributor out, turn the shaft and reinstall to get the shutter wheel at the approximate angle shown. The slots should be at about the11 o’clock and 7 o’clock positions. The screw holes should be at the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions. Step 5 Install the distributor clamp and tighten the clamp bolt lightly so the distributor can still be rotated. Step 6 Set the upper housing on the base assembly as shown in figure 3. (The upper housing will only install one way because of the locating screw) Rotate the base assembly slightly if necessary so that the slot in the shutter wheel lines up with the slot in the upper housing. CHECKING OF SWITCHES Check the switches for the continuity between the terminals to determine correct connection. Read the following for switch inspection. SWITCH CONNECTION AS SHOWN IN MANUAL The manual contains a connection chart as shown left showing the terminal connections of the switches (e.g., main switch, handlebar switch, brake switch, lighting switch, etc.) The extreme left column indicates the switch positions and the top line indicates the colors of leads connected with the terminals in the switch component. “C’&-0″ indicates the terminals between which there is a continuity of electricity; i.e., a cl.osed circuit at the respective switch positions. In this chart: “R and Br” and “L/W and L/R” are continuous with the “ON” switch position. “B and B/W” is continuous with the “OFF” switch position. “B and B/W” is continuous with the “LOCK” switch position. “B and B/W” and “R and L/R” are continuous with the “P” switch position. CHECKING SWITCH FOR TERMINAL CONNECTION Before checking the switch, refer to the connection chart as shown above and check for the correct terminal connection (closed circuit) by the color combination. INSTALLATION ■ Outline Procedures This section gives general information needed for mounting the individual radio components on and in the fairing. A) Fairing 1) Install radio on fairing before mounting fairing on motorcycle. (Remove fairing from your motorcycle when already mounted). 2) Remove fairing parts. 3) Drill unit mount holes. 4) Install six wire clips. 5) Install windshield on fairing before install- ing speakers. 6) Install radio indicator I on indicator panel II , then install indicator panel on fairing. 7) Install speakers III. 8) Install nutplate IV. 9) Install Power Amplifier in fairing. 10) Install radio funer VI. 11) Install the radio controller VII. 12) Install controller base panel VIII 13) Install radio switch sub-wire. 14) Connect adapter harness and wires inside fairing by working through left turn signal lens hole. B) Motorcycle frame and handlebar 1) Remove travel trunk and seat. Unscrew four shelter bolts (M6, one on each side at front and rear) to route antenna feeder. 2) Install antenna mount and antenna IX. 3) Route antenna feeder along the frame tube. 4) Install radio switch X on left handlebar lever bracket and route the wires. 3 of 11 Page 4 C) Fairing instllation 1) Install fairing on motorcycle. 2) Connect motorcycle wire harness 9-P coupler to fairing wire 9-P coupler. 3) Connect radio switch wire to switch sub- wire.4) Connect antenna feeder. 5) Confirm that radio operates properly. Reinstall parts removed in step 2 or (A) and in step 1 of (B). REWORKING ■ Remove Fairing and Fairing Parts (Fig.10) 1) Install radio on fairing before mounting fairing on motorcycle. (Remove fairing from your motorcycle when already mounted). 2) Remove right and left fairing pockets, right and left turn signal lenses, right and left nutplates, left hole cover and indi- cator base panel from fairing. (Fig.10) Fig. 10 LEI-1 NU I PLATE 4 of 11■ Reworking on Fairing — Speaker mounting holes- 1) Remove 18 mm grommet. 2) Lightly roll template so that it will follow contour of fairing snugly. 3) Position template on fairing with its upper and outer edges aligned with those offairing as indicated by arrows. 4) Attach template to fairing using adhesive tape where shown. 5) Punch mark centers of four holes with a
drift and hammer. 6) Drill 6 mm holes through marked centers. To obtain a more balanced response with richer, deeper bases, drill two 50 mm holes in the fairing so as to link the speaker box with the inside of the fairing. Fig. 11-1

The installation of the AFR Tuner should be done by experienced technicians only. Always disconnect the battery from the motorcycle before making any modification to the wiring harness. Remove the negative terminal from the battery before starting the installation work. The quality of the installation work greatly affects the reliability of the AFR Tuner and the motorcycle. Work precisely and very carefully when modifying the wiring harness of the vehicle. Always double check that the wire you are about to cut or tap into is the correct one. The ECM or the AFR Tuner can be destroyed by a faulty installation. 3.2. Installing the AFR Tuner to the wiring harness 3.2.1. Main cable The AFR Tuner connects to the motorcycle through its Main connector . Figure 2 shows the wiring diagram and the necessary modifications, which needs to be made when installing the unit into the fuel injection system of the motorcycle. Information about the ECM terminal numbers and wire colors for some popular motorcycles can be found in Chapter 6 . The best location for installing the AFR Tuner main unit is at the passenger seat area of the motorcycle mounted in the trunk space or on the subframe under the fairing, as this place provides protection from engine heat and the weather. Electrical contact between the metal casing of the AFR Tuner and the rear subframe must be prevented by using insulating material, such as the included self adhesive velcro strips. If necessary use some cable ties to secure the unit in place. The installation of the AFR Tuner into the wiring harness involves tapping into some wires and cutting others while connecting the two ends to the AFR Tuner. The harness modifications are best done near the ECM, since most of the wires can be found there. Part of the wiring modifications are related to connecting the AFR Tuner in-line between the ECM and the fuel injectors. In such cases when the motorcycle is equipped with primary and secondary injectors the AFR Tuner has to be installed on the primary injectors, which operate under all engine conditions. Correct grounding of the AFR Tuner is very important for electrical noise reduction. The above mentioned insulation of the metal case from the motorcycle frame is necessary for the same reason, which is to avoid the forming of a ground loop. An even more important requirement is the correct connection of the three ground wires of the AFR Tuner. As shown on Figure 2 , these three wires must be led out separately to the ECM and connected together at same point where the ECM ground wire is tapped into. This point should be as close to the ECM terminal as possible. For best quality of the electrical contacts all connections should be done by soldering and covering the exposed part of the wire with heat shrink tubing. For reliability reasons do not use clip on type wire taps
