subsequent seal failure it can cause, is to cover or “shield” the tubes in some manner that goes beyond the normal protection offered by dust seals. My old CB200T has the traditional, accordion-rubber “gaiters” over the shock tubes, and the seals have failed only once in 12 years, at 80,000 miles. That’s why you still see gaiters on virtually every off-road bike made. But somewhere along the line “fashion” and “design” overcame common sense, and we all started insisting on street bikes with modern-looking, totally exposed, polished fork tubes. Gaiters were dropped almost entirely, determined to be much too old-fashioned-looking, or as contributing in some miniscule manner to fork “stiction.” Maybe so—but they worked. Some riders, wise to the ways of seal failure, have developed “home remedies” to protect their forks. Among the ones I’ve seen are sections of rubber hose attached to fork housings with hose clamps, or the more attractive addition of vinyl “wrap-arounds” that velcro around the tubes and slide up and down with the forks. Some of these are even color-matched to the bikes. I used to own a Honda GL1200 that needed the fork seals replaced at 21,000 miles, 43,000 miles, and 62,000 miles. Then I covered the exposed upper tubes with vinyl “sliders,” and never had to replace the seals again. The bike’s current owner now has the odometer up to 124,000 miles, and the seals are still holding. Honda must have gotten wise to this, because the GL1500 models came with plastic “fork shields” built right onto the front fender. Even though they don’t quite cover the entire exposed area of the tubes

YAMAHA PRO-R AIR CLEANER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL

STEP 1 Remove the seat, fuel tank, and OEM air cleaner assembly. Disconnect the hoses connected to the air cleaner while leaving them connected to the motorcycle. Save the clamp that secures the air duct to the carburetor and the OEM fasteners used to secure the stock air cleaner assembly to the motorcycle as some will be reused. STEP 2 Remove the carburetor according to the section in your Road Star factory service manual that outlines procedures for carburetor removal, disassembly, reassembly and installation. Now is a good time to proceed with re-jetting the carburetor. We have supplied jets to cover many common configurations. For jet locations and jetting recommendations with various exhaust combinations see Addendum I. Since the OEM screws retaining the float bowl are easily damaged, we have included replacement M4 socket head cap screws to replace them, if necessary. STEP 3 Insert the rubber intake duct into the main support bracket as shown in PIC. 1. The rubber nipple should be pointing toward the longest leg of the bracket. STEP 4 Insert the rubber intake duct into the Pro R-series Hypercharger in the same fashion it was installed in the main support bracket. See PIC.2. You may need to use a screwdriver to help “poke” the flange of the Rubber Intake Boot into position inside the Pro R-series Hypercharger. STEP 5 Line up the three holes in the back plate of the Pro R-series Hypercharger and the three holes in the flange of the rubber intake duct with the three holes in the main support bracket. Insert the three supplied 1/4″-20 x 5/8″ socket head cap screws from inside the Pro R-series Hypercharger and secure on the back side of the main support bracket with the 1/4″-20 thin nylock nuts. You will need to pull back the inner flange of the rubber intake duct to access the holes. Hold the nylock nuts with a 7/16″ wrench as you tighten the socket head cap screws with a 3/16″ hex key. Be careful not to over tighten and cause the rubber intake duct to pucker around the nylock nuts. See PIC.3.

ADLY Electric corrosion problem solved

makes the most patient equipment manager’s jaw get tight. It’s a messy process that involves draining, disassembly, flushing, and days of downtime. Now, our dealership offers a new, more thorough, less invasive solution to hydraulic contamination that can be brought right to your jobsite. It’s called the Ultra Clean®System. The innovative Ultra Clean hose and tube cleaning system removes contamination by using a pneumatic launcher to shoot a projectile through hydraulic lines and hoses. A “shelled” pump can send a lot of metal debris downstream with the last few gallons of oil that flow through the system. Flushing hydraulic lines with solvent and air can be tedious, and sometimes ineffective, but the Ultra Clean system makes decontaminating hydraulic systems fast and easy. It also lets you skip the hassle of handling and disposing harsh chemicals. It is as simple as disconnecting both ends of a line or hose and launching the specially designed projectile through it. “The Ultra Clean system is more efficient than any other method we’ve tried,” says Scott Dickey, Service Manager, Murphy Tractor, the John Deere dealership in Lincoln, Nebraska. “We no longer worry about the time and expense of hose replacement and tube disassembly for repair service. Ultra Clean is clearly superior than flushing with solvents and air blow-down.” Dickey says the Ultra Clean system is also used to prepare fabricated hose assemblies for over-the-counter sales at his dealership. He points out it has increased the value of parts and service by assuring delivery of cleaned assemblies that are ready for service. Logo sealing tape covers the open assembly ends and assures the customer that the assembly has been cleaned. It also serves as a reminder to keep contamination out of the system when the new assembly is put into place. Cleaning fabricated hoses right after they are constructed is another way in which dealers are taking a proactive approach to reducing contamination in hydraulic systems and reducing the risk of contam- ination. DataTrending Is A Road Map to Less Downtime. It’s important to understand that a little dirt can cost a lot of money if you let it get into your hydraulic system. Dirt circulating in your hydraulic fluid grates like a belt sander on internal machine parts. Trending, along with a proactive approach to contamination control and elimination, can help you prevent this scary scenario. “A little bit of contamination can cause lots of wear and tear in just a short time,” explains Mike Daly, fluid analysis program marketing manager for John Deere Construction & S

New Styles And Features for Ridley's Automatic Motorcycles in 2008

“Our focus is on delivering a motorcycle that fits the needs of the new market. It seems that so many companies are trying to revamp their line by adding a sixth gear. We’re taking the gears completely out of the equation and letting riders get back to actually riding”, said Clay Ridley about the effort his company has directed towards their new product line. Several new unique features are creating interest among Ridley Riders on the company’s riders forum, one of which is a parking brake. “We take comments from the owners of our motorcycles very, very seriously. Ridley Riders have asked for a parking brake for added security”, commented Jay Ridley, Vice President for the company. Added to the long list of improvements for the new year model is the new “2 Year Plus” factory warranty which offers twenty-five months of factory backed warranty. According to Ridley, this new warranty exceeds coverage provided by most other domestic manufacturer’s. One more reason Ridley believes 2008 will be the company’s best selling year model. With the holiday season fast approaching, Ridley Motorcycle felt the introduction of the new models would have more impact if held back until the middle of November. For Ridley, the holiday season means big business. Several of Ridley’s dealers have reported higher sales in December than in May. The company attributed this to their market which is nearly divided in half among men and women.
