Kawasaki Mule Duster Adhesive Hook Strip Installation Instructions

Use the loop on the Duster as a guide to locate the Hook Strip on the front of the bed. Clean the area and install the Adhesive Hook Strip as in Step 1. Install Adhesive Hook Strip to Front of Bed Cut the Adhesive Hook Strip into six (6) pieces to match the loop sewn to the Duster. Use the loop on the Duster as a guide to locate the Hook Strip on the sides of the bed and the tailgate. Clean the areas with a 50% Water/Alcohol Solution. Peel the backing off the hook a little at a time and press it fi rmly into place. Install Adhesive Hook Strip Allow 72 hours for the adhesive to set. Avoid unnecessary fastening and unfastening of the Duster during this period. Open Bed Open the bed of the vehicle. Tailgate Adhesive Hook Strip Allow 72 hours for the adhesive to set. Avoid unnecessary fastening and unfastening of the Duster during this period. Secure Duster to Front of Bed Fasten the loop sewn to the front of the Duster to the Adhesive Hook Strip on the front of the bed

The majority of HSR42/45 installations use the Harley cable. Installation is simple when the installation instructions are followed, step by step. Those steps are: • Remove the stock Harley choke cable assembly. • Remove the spring and plunger from the stock cable. • Remove the Mikuni “Starter Nut” from the HSR. • Remove the Mikuni spring and plunger from the HSR. • Install the Mikuni spring and plunger on the Harley choke cable. • Install the Harley choke cable with the fitted Mikuni spring and plunger into the HSR carburetor. • DO NOT use the Mikuni Starter Nut; discard it. • DO NOT use the Harley spring or plunger; discard them. Note: If you do not have installation instructions, you may download them from the www.mikuni.com website in the “manuals” section. If the Mikuni Starter Nut is fitted to the Harley cable, the choke plunger is held off its seat and the choke is open all the time. If the Harley spring and plunger are used, the plunger does not seal and the choke is open all the time. The result, in both cases, is very poor fuel mileage (30 mpg or less). Another possible cause of poor mileage, rough idle and fouled spark plugs is incorrect cable routing. The stock Harley choke cable is very stiff and may not be fully seated in the metal elbow at the carburetor end of its run. This condition is easily corrected. On occasion, one of these errors may have been made by someone else at another location. The unfortunate mechanic who inherits the task of correcting the rich condition, poor idle and poor fuel mileage may have no clue as to the mismatch of parts. For this reason, we include the photos and text to help you discover if your installation is correct.

Remove the rear wheel per the REAR WHEEL, REMOVAL instructions in the Service Manual. 3. Disassemble, clean and inspect all parts to be re-used per Service Manual instructions. 4. Re-assemble all saved components to the new chrome rear wheel assembly. See REAR WHEEL, ASSEMBLY in the Service Manual. Do not re-use brake disc screws. Re-using disc screws can result in torque loss and damage to rotor and/or brake assembly. (00319b) 5. Fasten the brake disc to the valve stem side of the wheel using the Torx®screws from the kit. Install the compensator bowl with the 12-point screws and lockwashers saved earlier. 6. Install the new wheel to the rear fork. Refer to REAR WHEEL, INSTALLATION in the Service Manual. Proceed to Step 7. Front Wheel 2. See Figure 2. Remove the front wheel per the FRONT WHEEL, REMOVAL instructions in the Service Manual. 3. Disassemble, clean and inspect all parts to be re-used per Service Manual instructions. Mark the left and right brake discs so they can be re-installed to the same location. 4. Re-assemble all saved components to the new chrome front wheel assembly. See FRONT WHEEL, ASSEMBLY in the Service Manual. Do not re-use brake disc screws. Re-using disc screws can result in torque loss and damage to rotor and/or brake assembly. (00319b) 5. Using the Torx ® shoulder bolts from the kit, and the saved spring washers fasten the brake discs to the same side of the wheel from which they were removed. 6. Install the new wheel to the front forks per the FRONT WHEEL, INSTALLATION instructions in the Service Manual. Proceed to Step 7. Front and Rear Wheels 7. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the MAXI-FUSE instructions to replace the maxi-fuse and right-side cover. After servicing brakes and before moving motorcycle, pump brakes to build brake system pressure. Insufficient pressure can adversely affect brake performance, which could result in death or serious injury. (00279a) After servicing the brake system, test brakes at low speed. If brakes are not operating properly, testing at high speeds can cause loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00289a) Maintenance and Cleaning Chrome parts must be maintained regularly to ensure that they keep their original shine and luster. 1. Clean heavily-soiled wheel surfaces using Harley Wheel and Tire Cleaner, part number 94658-98, applied with Harley Wheel and Spoke Brush, part number 43078-99. 2. Thoroughly clean chrome with a good quality chrome cleaner, such as Harley Bright Chrome Cleaner, part number 94683-99. 3. After cleaning and polishing, seal the finish with a good quality sealer such as Harley Glaze Polish and Sealant, part number 99701-84

installation Do not lubricate the left grip of handlebar in any way before installation. This could allow grip to come off while riding which could result in loss of control of vehicle and death or serious injury. 1. Remove existing left handlebar grip by carefully cutting it away from the handlebar using a sharp blade or knife. Remove right grip/throttle sleeve assembly following instructions in appropriate Service Manual. After removal, make sure that left and right handlebar ends are clean and smooth. 2. Check that end caps are securely fastened to grips. Tighten screw inside grip to secure end caps. 3. Assemble new throttle sleeve to handlebar. Refer to appropriate Service Manual for detailed procedure. NOTE Surfaces to be glued must be clean, dry, and free from oil. If surfaces are not clean, dry, and free from oil, then the new application may not adhere as desired. Please observe the following WARNINGS when using the adhesive contained in this kit. FLAMMABLE, INJURIOUS TO EYES, HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED, VAPOR HARMFUL. FLAMMABLE: CONTAINS METHYL ETHYL KETONE. Use only in well ventilated areas. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and prolonged skin contact. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately. This product contains a chemical(s) known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. 4. Liberally apply a coating of Harley-Davidson Adhesive (Part No. 99839-95) to the inside of left handlebar grip using the cotton swab. Make sure adhesive fully covers all inside surface area of the grip. Also, apply a coat of adhesive to the handlebar end. 5. Check how the rectangular pattern is oriented on the throttle (right) grip. Align pattern on left grip to match right grip and immediately push the new grip completely onto handlebar end. 6. Rotate the end caps so the “Live to Ride”text is positioned at the top of both grips. NOTE Do not hesitate when installing left grip or adhesive will dry before installation is complete. Allow 6-8 hours at 70°F to achieve full cure of the adhesive. Prior to starting engine, verify that the throttle control will snap back to the idle position when released. A throttle control that prevents the engine from automatically returning to idle can lead to a loss of control of vehicle which could result in death or serious injury. Cleaning

INSTALLATION 1. Remove existing rear wheel assembly. Save axle, axle nut, brake disc and wheel spacers for kit installation. Refer to the service manual. NOTES Prior to removing or installing the wheel, the rear brake caliper must be removed. The cotter pin or spring clip for the axle nut must be replaced. They are available for purchase from a Harley-Davidson dealer. Do not re-use brake disc screws. Re-using disc screws can result in torque loss and damage to rotor and/or brake assembly. (00319b) Do not re-use sprocket mounting screws. Re-using sprocket mounting screws can result in torque loss and damage to the sprocket and/or belt assembly. (00480b) 2. See Figure 1. Install valve stem assembly (E) on wheel. Refer to the service manual. 3. Assemble wheel installation kit components, stock brake disc, and sprocket to wheel using the appropriate service parts table. Refer to the service manual. NOTES Install the primary bearing first, following the instructions in the service manual and using the WHEEL BEARING REMOVER/INSTALLER. The machined grooves in the hub face indicate the primary bearing side. 4. Install rear wheel (1), stock axle, and stock spacers to motorcycle. Refer to the service manual. MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING NOTE This wheel assembly includes plugs that have been installed in the openings between the brake disc mounting holes on one side of the wheel and in the compensator bowl of the 16×5 inch wheel. Missing or damaged plugs can be replaced using Wheel Plug Kit (44459-04) or individual plug (43871-09 – 16×5 inch wheel). Chrome parts must be maintained regularly so they keep their original shine and luster. 1. Clean heavily-soiled wheel surfaces using Harley-Davidson Wheel and Tire Cleaner, applied with Harley Wheel and Spoke Brush. 2. Thoroughly clean chrome with a good quality chrome cleaner, such as Harley Bright Chrome Cleaner. 3. These kits fit 1999 and later XL models, 1996 and later Dyna™ and 1996 and later Softail models (except 2006 FXSTC) equipped with a Medallion Plate-Style Sissy Bar Upright. Will not fit with Backrest Pads that have mounting brackets that match the contour of the sissy bar medallion. Will not fit with sissy bar mounted storage bags INSTALLATION 1. Follow the instructions in the Service Manual to remove the seat. See Figure 1. Remove and retain any existing medallion. Adhesive Mounted Medallion (1): Carefully pry the medallion (1) from the plate. Remove any adhesive residue from the back of the medallion and the sissy bar medallion plate. To avoid contaminating the adhesive backing, place the medallion in an area away from dirt and debris. Push Nut Mounted Medallion (2): Carefully pry the edge of the medallion until the medallion is free of the push nuts. 2. See Figure 2. Remove and retain the screw (1) that secures the backrest pad to the plate. 3. Remove and retain the two screws (2), backrest bracket (3) and backrest pad (4). Install the Light Assembly 1. See Figure 3. Clean the front of the medallion plate (2) with a 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water. 2. Peel the adhese bracket kit (Part Number 59545-04) and sandwich the light assembly between the bracket frame and the medallion plate. The bracket clamps will fit around the back of the sissyive backing from the adhesive tape located on the light assembly (1). Fit and hold the light assembly to the front of the medallion plate (2). 3. See Figure 6. For 2.55 inch (64.8 mm) center to center mounting hole backrest pads, use th bar arms.

INSTALLATION The fork sliders included in this kit install in the same way as the original equipment parts. NOTE Prior to installation of this kit, check the bores of the new sliders to be certain they are free of dirt and debris or damage to the new sliders may occur. 1. Support the motorcycle so the front end is off the floor and the forks are fully extended. 2. Remove the front fender, front brake caliper(s), and front wheel according to instructions found in the Chassis section of the appropriate Service Manual. NOTE On some models other parts will also need to be removed to access the front forks. See the Service Manual. 3. Drain and remove the front forks. See the Chassis Section of the Service Manual. Wear safety glasses or goggles when servicing fork assembly. Do not remove slider tube caps without relieving spring preload or caps and springs can fly out, which could result in death or serious injury. (00297a) 4. Disassemble the front fork tubes according to instructions in the Service Manual, and replace the original fork sliders with the black sliders from the kit. 5. Assemble the front fork tubes, replacing worn seals, bushings or other additional items as needed. NOTE Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the drain screws. Use of an impact wrench may damage the screws. 6. Tighten the drain screws to 52-78 in-lbs (5.9-8.8 Nm) 7. Fill with Harley-Davidson TYPE E FORK OIL according to the instructions found in the Service Manual. 8. Install the front fork and any parts that were removed to access the front forks. Install the front fender, wheel, and caliper(s) according to the instructions found in the Chassis section of the Service Manual. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108 requires motorcycles to be equipped with rear and side reflectors. Be sure rear and side reflectors are properly mounted. Poor visibility of rider to other motorists can result in death or serious injury. (00336b) 1 is02733 1. Install bottom of reflector 2.0 inches above center of axle Figure 1. Reflector Placement NOTE The front reflectors located on both sides of the fork sliders will be removed, cleaned and installed on the new chrome fork sliders. 9. See Figure 1. Using a piece of dental floss (or similar material) in a back and forth motion, loosen reflector from fork slider at both ends. Rotate reflector from side to side until it can be removed. Retain reflector for future use. See Figure 2. Repeat procedure on the opposite side fork slider. 10. Peel off any excess adhesive from both reflectors. Surface must be clean for reinstallation. 11. Peel off one side of backing on foam double sided tape. Press firmly on tape to secure it to reflector. Repeat double sided adhesive tape installation on remaining reflector. NOTE The bottom edge of reflector should be two inches (50 mm) above the center of the axle shaft. 12. See Figure 1. Remove second side (outside surface) of adhesive backing. Place reflector in position (1) and press reflector firmly into place to activate the adhesive. Repeat for remaining reflector. 13. Pump brakes prior to test riding vehicle.

A Service Manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer. Kit Contents Table 1. Kit Contents Part Number Description 74612-06 Radio and gauge faceplate trim There are no Service Parts available with this kit. INSTALLATION NOTE Mounting surface of faceplate trim must be above 60°F (16°C), or the trim may not stay attached. 1. Using a 50:50 isopropyl alcohol/water solution, thoroughly clean the surface where the faceplate trim will be installed. Do not clean with denatured alcohol, mineral spirits, or other solvent products, or damage to the radio may occur. (00411b) 2. Allow the surface to dry completely before continuing to install kit. 3. Test the fit of the faceplate trim prior to removing adhesive backing. 4. Remove the adhesive backing from the back of the faceplate trim. 5. See Figure 1. Install the faceplate trim, locating it upward as far as possible. This position will align the opening in the faceplate trim with the indicator lights. NOTE If you do not position the faceplate trim properly, this may prevent proper clearances between the CD door and trim for 2006 and later models. 6. Let the adhesive cure for at least 24 hours at no less than 60°F (16°C). is01435 Figure 1.
