Many 2008 Cobra CX50SR (King) customers are experiencing performance issues with their new motorcycles. These issues include cracking/popping noises, degrading performance, and excessively hot exhaust pipes. These issues have been traced back to manufacturing flaws with the new IDM brand ignition system. Because of the time associated with getting these issues sorted out, Cobra is switching production of the 2008 King over to the PVL brand ignition system (the same design used on 2007 model King motorcycles). Customers with 2008 Kings built prior to this date may exchange it for a PVL system at no cost for the hardware. For existing product in the field, Cobra will not support the IDM system until our supplier has their component functioning properly. To install the PVL system on the 2008 King simply remove the old hardware, and bolt on new (an updated Cobra universal puller will be required to remove the ignition rotor). The timing of the new PVL system will have to be set properly during installation

Remove the following from the vehicle. See OEM manual for detailed instructions. Items to be retained for reinstallation after modification are noted.  Seat – to be re-installed; without modification.  Left and right side covers – to be re-installed after modification.  Tour Box – to be re-installed (if so equipped).  Left and right saddle bags (if so equipped).  Left and right rear crash bars, saddlebag rails (if so equipped).  Tour Box mounting frame (if so equipped).  Left and right passenger foot rests – to be re-installed without modification.  Left and right mufflers  Rear wheel NOTE: Prior to removing rear wheel, depress foot brake and secure in down position (e.g., zip-tie to floor board). Refer to the 2008 CBR1000RR Service Manual for specific removal instructions. While completing this procedure, be careful not to damage the covers, cowls, or any other components. 1. Remove the air intake cover (page 3-8). 2. Remove the upper inner cover (page 3-9). 3. Remove the lower cowl (page 3-9). 4. Remove the right middle cowl (page 3-10). 5. Remove the right crankcase cover (page 10-5). Clutch Removal (page 10-7) 6. Remove the starter idle gear and shaft. 7. Remove the snap ring and stopper ring. 8. Remove the clutch lifter piece and plate. 9. Unstake the clutch center lock nut. Be careful not to damage the mainshaft threads. 10. Hold the pressure plate with the special tool. You must use the special tool (Clutch Holder, T/N 070MB-MFLA100) when removing the lock nut. Using an impact wrench will damage the main shaft threads. Clutch Holder: 070MB-MFLA100 (autoshipped in May 2008) 11. Remove the clutch center lock nut and washer and discard the lock nut as shown on top of page 3 12. Remove the clutch spring holder, spring seat, and two clutch springs. 13. Remove the spring seat. 14. Remove the following: • Pressure plate
• Spring seat • Judder spring • Clutch disc A • Clutch plate A • Seven clutch discs B • Clutch disc C  Clutch center NOTE: Do not remove the clutch outer. New Clutch Installation (page 10-20) NOTE: The new clutch disc assembly has a dif- ferent order of plates than the illustration shown in the Service Manual. Keep note of this when repairing updated units.
15. Install the new clutch disc assembly with- out removing the setting bolts. Rotate the main shaft to align the clutch disc assem- bly with the main shaft spline. 16. Slightly loosen the setting bolts. 17. Rotate clutch disc C to align its tabs into clutch outer shallow slots, then fully install the clutch disc assembly. 18. Remove and discard the setting bolts. 19. Install the spring seat

Odometer • The total riding distance is indicated. Fuel gauge • The gauge indicates how much fuel is in the tank (the gauge does not work when the ignition switch is off). The needle moves from full “F” to empty “E” as your fuel decreases. Fill the tank with a good grade of 89-90 octane unleaded gasoline. High Beam Indicator LIght • The high beam light indicates that the high beam headlight is in use. NOTE: Apply the low beam to avoid obstructing the view of other drivers. Turn Signal Indication Light • The turn signals indicate that you are turning a chosen direction, push the button in the desired turning direction, it will return to the center, press the button in to turn off. Please take all precautions! 2) Using the 19 mm open wrench and the provided 8 mm hex wrench, loosen the button head bolt and locknut as shown This large washer will not be there on 2007 & 2008 models 3) Next, remove the locknut and the small washer from the back, and remove the button head bolt and the large washer from the front. You can pull out the button head bolt by slightly moving the rear suspension up and down at the same time. 4) 5) Lift the shock absorber and insert the spacer where the shock absorber was installed before. Note: The original bolt and washers (if any were on your bike) are not going to be used, but you should keep them for the future, in case you decide to uninstall the lowering kit. Slide over the main kit body and insert the provided hex head cap screw as shown Next, slide the provided hex head cap screw all the way through

They are designed for competition-oriented MX riders who demand maximum performance from their exhaust systems. With their production quality, engine performance improvements and modern Hexagonal muffler design they satisfy the requirements of all riders. The systems are designed for two markets; in the US they are available with an approved spark arrester, and for the EU and other non-US markets they come with a noise damper. New for 2008 is additional chamber that helps to reduce noise emission and provides better power and torque at low rpm range. PERFORMANCE Measurements of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION system on the KAWASAKI KX 250 F (with muffler insert): Power & Torque: The Akrapovic Evolution and Racing systems deliver a performance increase throughout nearly the entire rpm range. It is most pronounced in the bottom and the top of the range. The systems deliver increased torque similar to the power increase. Max. increased power of 0.7 HP was measured at 12260 rpm, while max. power of 34.6 HP was measured at 11400 rpm. CONFIGURATION Akrapovic Racing and Evolution systems are of a recognised Hexagonal off-road form. They differ only in terms of the material of the pipe: we use stainless steel for Racing and titanium for Evolution. The header tube is conical, made from stainless steel (Racing) or titanium (Evolution) with additional chamber. It is jointed with a conical SS/titanium link pipe by a sleeve joint, which is secured with a silicon-shielded spring. The link pipe is welded to the muffler. The inlet cap, due to the method of connection with the link pipe, is made from stainless steel (Racing) or titanium (Evolution), same for the internal perforation. The outlet cap is made of carbon-fiber for evolution and composite polymer for Racing system. The outer sleeve of the muffler is available either made from titanium or carbon fiber. The system is attached to the motorcycle with the Akrapovic carbon fiber clamp. The Akrapovic carbon fiber heat shield is also intended for this system. The system comes with a built-in noise damper for the European and other markets, and an approved spark arrester for the American market, which is marked with a laser engraving

Several new unique features are creating interest among Ridley Riders on the company’s riders forum, one of which is a parking brake. “We take comments from the owners of our motorcycles very, very seriously. Ridley Riders have asked for a parking brake for added security”, commented Jay Ridley, Vice President for the company. Added to the long list of improvements for the new year model is the new “2 Year Plus” factory warranty which offers twenty-five months of factory backed warranty. According to Ridley, this new warranty exceeds coverage provided by most other domestic manufacturer’s. One more reason Ridley believes 2008 will be the company’s best selling year model. With the holiday season fast approaching, Ridley Motorcycle felt the introduction of the new models would have more impact if held back until the middle of November.
