Throttle twist grip. On right handlebar. Twist inwards to open. When fully closed engine should just idle when hot. Air lever. Small lever on right handlebar. Pull inwards to increase air supply to carburetter. Once set, when engine has warmed up, requires no alteration for different road speeds. Should be fully closed when starting engine from cold. Both models have snappy push rod O.H.V. engines with light-alloy cylinder heads, “Monobloc” carburettors, hairpin valve-springs, and automatic-ignition control. Their specification includes: “Teledraulic” front forks, Girling rear-suspension units, a quickly detachable rear wheel, die-cast light-alloy hubs, a deep secondary-chain guard, a new A.M.C. four- speed gearbox, Lucas headlamp, twin pilot-lights, and other attractive features. * The A.J.S. engine and frame numbers required on Form R.F. 1/2 will be found on the near-side of the crankcase and the off-side of the saddle lug, or on the off-side of the front down-tube (later models). THE BOOK OF THE A.J.S. 1 Essential Preliminaries. Before you can legally ride on the road – (1) Insure against all third-party risks and obtain the vital “certificate of insurance.” With a new machine you cannot get this until the machine is licensed, and an insurance “cover note” must be obtained. If you have a valuable machine, you are advised to take out full comprehensive insurance. (2) Obtain the registration licence and registration book (Form R.F.I/2)* or renew the licence (Form R.F. I/A). (3) Obtain a three-monthly “provisional” or an annual driving licence (Form D.L.I).* (4) Fit a reliable speedometer if one is not fitted (not essential if machine registered prior to 1st Oct., 1937). (5) If you carry a pillion-passenger, see that he or she sits astride a proper pillion seat securely fixed to the machine (all “springers” have dualseats), and that the passenger holds a current annual or substantive driving licence for Group G if you are a “learner.” (6) If you are ineligible for an annual or substantive driving licence, attach “L” plates to the front and back of the machine. (7) If not already provided, fit a red reflector (1½ in. minimum diameter) vertically at the rear of the motor-cycle and, on a sidecar outfit, an additional red reflector and rear lamp at the rear of the sidecar and at the same height as those on the motor-cycle. (8) Use an ignition-suppression type sparking plug or terminal cover if the machine was registered for the first time after 1. st July, 1953. All the official forms referred to above may be obtained from any money-order post office. See also footnote **, with reference to Forms R.F, 1/A or R.F. 112. You are not eligible for a substantive driving licence for Group G unless you are 16 and have complied with one of these conditions- (a) You have held a licence (other than a provisional or Visitor’s licence authorizing the driving of vehicles of the class or description applied for within a period of ten years ending on the date of coming into force of the licence applied for. If you took receipt of your Cobra CM50 prior to April 22, 2004 the valving in the rear shock is incorrect causing excessive bottoming and bouncing of the rear end. The serial number of the shocks needing corrected is CO4940. Owners of 2004 model CM50s are being asked to send the shock to Öhlins USA, Inc. , at no charge, to receive the production intent valving. Please follow these steps when sending your shock with spring to Öhlins. 1. Remove the spring a. Clean the unit of dirt. b. Secure the end bushings in place with safety wire or ‘zip’ tie. c. Include your name and return address (indicate whether residential or business address)

1. Place the faulty radio in the same box in which the exchange radio was sent. THE FAULTY RADIO (CORE) MUST BE RETURNED IN THE SAME BOX IN WHICH THE EXCHANGE RADIO WAS SHIPPED. These boxes are identified by the label shown below which is printed on the inside of the lid. 2. Fill out the pre-printed FedEx airbill that came in the box with the exchange radio. The airbill should have the following address preprinted on it: AHM Remanufactured Parts c/o NK Parts Industries Inc./West 2640 Campbell Rd. Sidney, OH 45365-8836 • Do not use an ordinary FedEx airbill. The pre- addressed airbill has a special account number on it for the exchange program. If you need more airbills, call the Radio Order Desk toll free, not your assigned Parts Center . • Write your dealer number and the warranty claim number in the area shown in the sample airbill ffix the FedEx Airbill to the outside of the box. Radios sent in a box not bearing the correct FedEx airbill will not be accepted for reimbursement under this program. 4. Enclose a copy of the HONDANET for Windows warranty claim in the box. If the claim form is incomplete or not in the box, the faulty radio will be returned to your dealership. 5. Ship the faulty radio to the preprinted address on the airbill. check Piston Alignment in Cylinder Bore The purpose of this procedure is to check for and correct possible piston misalignment in the cylinder bore. During normal manufacturing, engine components such as crankcases, cylinders, and connecting rods can be machined to dimensions within factory specifications but on the extreme ends of the tolerance range. Sometimes these components when combined together form an assembly that is borderline or actually “out of print”. The worst result is that the pistons can run cocked in the cylinder bores causing the connecting rods to thrust to the sides exerting unnecessary stress on the pistons, rings, rod bearings and other related parts. This procedure is not the same as “blue printing”, but it provides almost the same result. We feel that not enough emphasis is given to checking the piston alignment in the cylinder bore. NOTE – All engines should be checked upon disassembly. This applies to any engine receiving new pistons which includes those being completely overhauled. CAUTION – Pistons which do not run true in cylinder bores may cause excessive connecting rod side thrusting. This may lead to premature ring, piston, connecting rod and rod bearing wear and eventual failure of these parts. Visual Procedure A. Reinstall cylinders on old pistons without rings. Hold cylinders securely in place. B. Move piston tight toward camside of engine. C. Turn engine over in normal direction of travel 2 or 3 revolutions and observe piston during process. D. Move piston toward driveside of engine and repeat Step C. If misalignment exists, piston will appear closer to cylinder wall at one point around circumference. Condition can be corrected by bending rod in opposite direction. Figure 1 shows an exaggerated side view. E. Repeat Steps B to D for other cylinder. F. Remove pistons and cylinders. Observe pistons for wear spots on sides above top compression ring. If either side near wristpin is worn clean while side opposite is carboned up, then piston was not running straight and true in cylinder bore. Piston will also generally show diagonal wear pattern on thrust faces of skirts and possibly signs of connecting rod to wristpin boss contact inside piston.

Information: In an effort to reduce service volume, a maintenance-free ribbed Poly-V belt was adopted on all R1100 models from engine number 38946130 onwards (09/94 production onwards). This belt does not need to be retentioned (even at the 600 mile service). The old belt required replacement every 24,000 miles. The new style belt is to be replaced every 36,000 miles. Use the same torque procedure as the old belt. Replacement of an old style belt with the new maintenance free belt requires the use of the new parts below: Parts Kit: 12 31 1 342 086 (kit consists of the following) In addition to the Poly-V belt, the following parts were also changed: 1. Top pulley new: steel old: Aluminum 2. Bottom pulley new no spot welds: old: steel w/three spot welds on front 3. Belt new: Ribbed, printing on belt (1342059 Fa. Dayco) or (1341779 Fa. Conti) Slight squeaking may be heard for a short time after a cold start when temperature is below 50°F. The belt should reach it’s correct operating tension soon after the start up. The belt only needs retentioned if the slight squeaking does not stop after warm up.

Installation of an S&S Super Stock cylinder head kit is easy and can be performed by any Harley-Davidson®repair shop equipped to do engine overhauls. No special tools other than those used in normal overhaul repair work are required. Read instructions thoroughly before starting work. When they are completely understood proceed with installation. 1. Remove Components and Inspect Parts Follow procedures outlined in appropriate Harley-Davidson® service manual to prepare motorcycle for top end service. NOTE: Disconnect batteryand drain all gasoline from gas tanks beforedoing any work. Gasoline is extremely flammable and explosive under certain conditions and toxic when breathed. Do not smoke. Perform installation in a well ventilated area away from open flames or sparks. A. Remove gas tanks and all other parts required to perform top end service. B. Remove carburetor, rocker covers, pushrods and pushrod tube assemblies, cylinder heads and cylinders. Also remove piston rings from piston. Do not remove pistons. NOTE: Be careful not to introduce any dirt or other foreign material into crankcase during disassembly of engine. Metal filings, dirtand any other foreign contamination in engine may cause premature wear and/or irreversible damage to bearings and other internal engine components. C. Thoroughly clean and inspect all parts that are to be reused. Any parts that show signs of wear or damage should be replaced. WARNING CAUTION 2.
