Installation NOTE A Service Manual for your vehicle is available from your Harley-Davidson Dealer. 1. Remove saddlebags from motorcycle according to Service Manual instructions. 2. Remove left and right side covers (located just ahead of saddlebags) by removing Phillips head screw from bottom of side cover. Save hardware and side covers for later reassembly. 3. Remove upper and lower bolts securing left and right forward saddlebag guards to frame. Remove Phillips head screws securing saddlebag guards to muffler supports. Discard saddlebag guards, but save hardware. 4. See Figure 1. Install new left and right forward saddlebag guards (1) with upper bolts (2), lower bolts (3) and Phillips head screw (4) saved from Step 3. 5. Insert one rear guard rail mount (6) onto rounded, tubular end of one of the saddlebag side guard rails (5). 6. Insert a hex cap screw (8) through one of the front guard rail mounts (7) as shown. 7. Line up saddlebag side guard rail (5) with attached rear guard rail mount (6) from Step 5 with lower hole in forward saddlebag guard rail (1). Insert hex cap screw (8) from front guard rail mount (7) through hole in forward guard rail (1) and into side guard rail assembly. Tighten finger tight. 8. See Figure 2. Install a side guard rail (2) in lower position on rear fender support (3) with pan head screw (1). Tighten finger tight. 9. Repeat Steps 5 through 8 in upper position. 10. Repeat Steps 5 through 9 for opposite side of vehicle. NOTE Each of the four guard rail clamps vary slightly. Two fit together for the right side of the motorcycle and two fit together for the left side. The inner right and left clamps have two holes drilled through them. 11. See Figure 2. Locate four guard rail clamps (4). Match up two left side and two right side guard rail clamps. Install one piece of cushion tape to the lower inner surface of right and left inner clamps. Peel off paper from outer surface of tape. Do not apply tape to the outside clamps. NOTE Be sure that you correctly position the inner clamps on the side guard rails, as directed in Step 12, before tape on inner clamp contacts side guard rails. Tape is very sticky and will be difficult or impossible to remove once it has made contact with side guard rail surface. 12. See Figure 2. Position clamps (4) in desired position on side guard rails (2). Install clamps (4) on left and right side of vehicle side guard rails using four Torx screws (5). Torx screw heads should face inward toward motorcycle. Tighten each screw a little at a time until secure. 13. Tighten hex cap screws and pan head screws installed in Steps 7 and 8.

Remove existing control arm end cap and grind the outside flush. See picture below for reference. The swing arm will drop if both sides are removed at the same time. To ease installation, complete one side before starting on the other. Note: there is a left and right. Left and right end caps shown. 2. Install mounting plate assembly 10002351 on top of the end cap using 7/16″ hex head bolt and lock washer in the bottom hole. Use the 7/16″ counter sink bolt in the top hole. Make sure the end cap is seated properly. The end cap notch should fit into the recess on the frame. The pivot arm assembly is shipped on mounting plate assembly; you may remove the pivot arm to make installation easier. 3. Snug up the bolts evenly, make sure the end caps are not crooked in relation to the frame. Tighten both bolts to 25 ft lbs. (Further tightening will be required after the toe in is set). 4. If you removed the left hand pivot arm assembly, remount it now, 10002575-A (pg 20) with seal, bearings (2), washer, nut, cotter pin and dust cover. 5. See Figure 2. Install valve stem assembly (L, M or N) on wheel. Refer to TIRES in service manual. 3. Assemble wheel installation kit components and brake disc(s) to wheel, using the appropriate service parts table. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in Service Manual. NOTES Install the primary bearing first using appropriate service manual and WHEEL BEARING REMOVER/INSTALLER. For Kits 43573-08, 43575-08, 43703-08, 43978-07, 43771-07, 43609-07, 40943-09, 40966-09 and 40996-09: • The left side of the wheel has a machined groove (item 5, Figure 2) in the hub face and/or DOT markings to identify it as the brake disc and primary bearing side. • Install the wheel so that the valve stem is on the right side of the motorcycle. For Kits 44323-07, 44322-07 and 44282-07: • Install the wheel so that the hub markings are on the left side of the motorcycle. The left side of the wheel has a machined groove (item 5, Figure 2) in the hub face and hub markings to identify it as the primary bearing side. • These kits include one or two hub plates (43985-00) to install between the brake disc and the wheel and a chrome hub cap (43986-00) to install on the wheel opposite the brake disc side. Hub covers must be installed to prevent water intrusion, which could cause an imbalance condition. Dual brake disc models: Install one stainless steel hub plate (3) between each brake disc and wheel hub. Discard chrome hub cap (2). Install brake discs according to service manual procedures. Single brake disc models: Install one stainless steel hub plate (3) between the brake disc and wheel hub. Install the brake disc according to service manual procedures. Install the chrome hub cap (2) on the side opposite the brake disc. Discard extra stainless steel hub plate (3). • The gross axle weight ratings is unaffected by the installation of this wheel on a vehicle equipped with a 21-inch wheel. For Kits 43975-07, 43773-07, and 43602-07: • The wheel has a machined groove (item 5, Figure 2) in the hub face to identify the right side. • For 2007 and later FX Softail Models and 2008 and later FXDWG: The left side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. For all other models the right side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. • For Kit 43602-07: An arrow is engraved into the right side hub to indicate the direction of rotation. • For Kits 43975-07 and 43773-07: An arrow is cast between the spokes on the right side to indicate the direction of rotation. • These kits include one or two hub plates (43985-00) to install between the brake disc and the wheel and a chrome hub cap (43986-00) to install on the wheel opposite the brake-disc side. Hub covers must be installed to prevent water intrusion, which could cause an imbalance condition. REMOVE AND INSTALL THE LEFT GRIP 1. See Figure 1. Using a T27 TORX® drive head, remove the two screws with flat washers securing the handebar clamp (3) to the clutch lever bracket. Remove the clamp and position the clutch hand lever assembly away from the handlebar 2. Using a T25 TORX® drive head, loosen but do not remove the upper and lower switch housing screws (1). 3. Remove the end cap from the existing left handlebar grip if so equipped. Remove the grip by carefully cutting it away from the handlebar using a sharp blade or knife. Do not lubricate left handlebar grip before installation. Lubricating grip can cause it to come off while riding, which could result in loss of control and death or serious injury. (00315a) NOTE Make sure that the handlebar surface and the inside of the grip are smooth, dry and thoroughly cleaned of all dirt or adhesive residue. 4. Position the new left grip (4) so the larger flange (5) is at the bottom. Push the grip fully onto the handlebar. 5. Fit the grooves (2) on the outboard side of the upper and lower switch housing over the flanges on the end of the grip, then loosely fasten the two screws. 6. Position the clutch hand lever assembly inboard of the switch housing assembly, engaging the tab on the lower switch housing in the groove at the bottom of the clutch lever bracket. 7. Align the holes in the handlebar clamp with those in the clutch lever bracket, and loosely fasten the two screws with flat washers. Adjust the switch housing and clutch hand control position for rider comfort. 8. Using a T27 TORX® drive head, tighten first the upper, then the lower handlebar clamp screws to 60-80 in-lbs (6.8-9 Nm) . 9. A Service Manual can be purchased from your Harley-Davidson Dealer. 1. Refer to the RIGHT HANDLEBAR SWITCH section of the Service Manual for removal of the switch housing assembly. This is necessary to access the throttle cables. 2. Refer to the THROTTLE CONTROL section of the Service Manual to disconnect the throttle cables and remove the existing right grip/throttle sleeve assembly. After removal, make sure that the handlebar end is clean and smooth. 3. Follow instructions in the Service Manual to install the new right grip/throttle sleeve to the handlebar and connect the throttle cables. 4. Verify that the right grip/throttle sleeve rotates and returns freely and does not bind on the handlebar or switch housing.

For Kit 41681-07: Install the wheel so that the hub markings are on the left side and the machined groove is on the right side of the motorcycle. • For 2006 and later FXDWG Models: When correctly installed, the tire will be 0.08-0.2 in (2-5 mm) off of center, compared to the fender. • For 2007 and later FX Softail and 2008 and later FXDWG Models: The left side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. • For 2006 and earlier FX Softail and 2007 and earlier FXDWG Models: The right side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. For Kit 40818-08: • Proper installation of this kit requires the separate purchase of two floating brake discs (44343-01 for 2004 – 2007 models and 44553-06A (stock) or 41500012 (polished) for 2008 and later models) and a tire (43371-07 on 2004-2008 models and 44026-09A on 2009-later models). The left side of the wheel has machined DOT markings to identify it as the primary bearing side. • For 2008 and later Touring: Install bearing shim (43903- 08) under the primary bearing. 3. Assemble wheel installation kit components and brake disc(s) to wheel, using the appropriate service parts table. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. 4. For FLSTC and FLSTN Models: Install wheel kit and right hand wheel spacer provided in installation kit. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. For FXSTD Models: Install wheel kit, stock wheel spacer and right side wheel spacer provided in installation kit in place of the tapered spacer discarded in Step 1. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. For FXSTS Models: Install wheel kit, stock wheel spacers and spacer provided in installation kit between the left side wheel spacer and the left fork. For all other models: Install previously removed wheel spacers. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. 5. Install front wheel (1), stock axle and stock axle nut. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING Chrome parts must be maintained regularly to verify that they keep their original shine and luster. 1. Clean heavily-soiled wheel surfaces using Harley-Davidson Wheel and Tire Cleaner, applied with Harley Wheel and Spoke Brush. 2. Thoroughly clean chrome with a good quality chrome cleaner, such as Harley Bright Chrome Cleaner. 3. After cleaning and polishing, seal the finish with a good quality sealer, such as Harley Glaze Polish and Sealant

1. Remove the Right Handlebar Control, upper and lower switch housing screws, and Right Grip from the Handlebar according to the service-manual instructions and set aside or leave hanging. Remember to insert a spacer between the rear brake light switch and the lever to keep the switch from being broken. 2. Remove the Left Hand switch housing from the handlebar according to the service-manual instructions. 3. Using a T27 TORX drive head remove the half of the clamp that secures the clutch hand lever to the handlebar and discard. The Heat Demon controller will replace this clamp when finishing the installation. Separate the clutch hand lever assembly from the handlebar and move away from the bar. 4. Mark the location of the Left Grip and remove it by twisting, heating or with air pressure. Almost all grips can be removed without damage. If this does not work it may be necessary to cut the grip for removal. 5. A hole needs to be drilled in the bottom of the handlebar to route the power wires and wires from the Controller. The location of the hole should be in the groove or recess on the bottom of the handlebar under the Left Switch Housing at the end of the groove toward the grip. Start by punching a hole location with a center punch to pierce the chrome. Use safety glasses that completely cover the eyes to protect from steel chips while drilling! Start with a small drill like a 3/32″ size to make the initial hole. Then use progressively larger drills or a step drill to increase the hole size to 5/16″. After the hole is drilled use a round file or deburring tool to remove the sharp edges. 6. Uncoil the plastic snake from the kit and run it from the right end of the handlebar out the left end. Twisting the snake or inserting it vertically versus flat can help to push around the corners. 7. Attach the white and yellow wires from the Right Grip Heater (Item 3) to the hole in the plastic snake and pull them through the bar so they exit the left end. (See drawing below) 8. Push the right heater into the handlebar by squeezing it together and sliding it fully inside of the bar. The end of the heater with the orange cap should be pushed in first. Cut the white and yellow wire to extend 4 inches beyond the left end of handlebar. 9. Install the Right Throttle Control and Grip according to the service manua

See Figure 1. Place a 5/32-inch (4 mm) thick insert between the brake lever and the lever bracket. 5. Refer to the service manual, and follow the instructions to loosen the brake hand lever/master cylinder assembly and remove the right-side upper and lower switch housing sub-assemblies from the handlebar. The friction shoe (1) is a loose fit on the end of the tension adjuster screw (2). Refer to the service manual, and follow the instructions to install the switch housing assembly and brake hand lever/master cylinder assembly to the handlebar. 8. Route the right-side switch harness along the same path as the original harness (along the right handlebar). Connect the pin housing to the black socket housing disconnected in Step 3. 9. For FLHT, FLHTC, FLHX, FLHXXX and FLTRX models: Continue at Step 11. For FLHR models: Obtain the new left-side switch housing assembly (6) from the kit. Separate the upper and lower halves of the switch housing assembly. Refer to the service manual, and follow the instructions to install the left-side switch housing assembly and clutch hand lever assembly to the handlebar. 10. Route the left-side hand control harness along the same path as the original harness (along the left handlebar). Connect the pin housing to the gray socket housing disconnected in Step 5

installation Do not lubricate the left grip of handlebar in any way before installation. This could allow grip to come off while riding which could result in loss of control of vehicle and death or serious injury. 1. Remove existing left handlebar grip by carefully cutting it away from the handlebar using a sharp blade or knife. Remove right grip/throttle sleeve assembly following instructions in appropriate Service Manual. After removal, make sure that left and right handlebar ends are clean and smooth. 2. Check that end caps are securely fastened to grips. Tighten screw inside grip to secure end caps. 3. Assemble new throttle sleeve to handlebar. Refer to appropriate Service Manual for detailed procedure. NOTE Surfaces to be glued must be clean, dry, and free from oil. If surfaces are not clean, dry, and free from oil, then the new application may not adhere as desired. Please observe the following WARNINGS when using the adhesive contained in this kit. FLAMMABLE, INJURIOUS TO EYES, HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED, VAPOR HARMFUL. FLAMMABLE: CONTAINS METHYL ETHYL KETONE. Use only in well ventilated areas. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and prolonged skin contact. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately. This product contains a chemical(s) known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. 4. Liberally apply a coating of Harley-Davidson Adhesive (Part No. 99839-95) to the inside of left handlebar grip using the cotton swab. Make sure adhesive fully covers all inside surface area of the grip. Also, apply a coat of adhesive to the handlebar end. 5. Check how the rectangular pattern is oriented on the throttle (right) grip. Align pattern on left grip to match right grip and immediately push the new grip completely onto handlebar end. 6. Rotate the end caps so the “Live to Ride”text is positioned at the top of both grips. NOTE Do not hesitate when installing left grip or adhesive will dry before installation is complete. Allow 6-8 hours at 70°F to achieve full cure of the adhesive. Prior to starting engine, verify that the throttle control will snap back to the idle position when released. A throttle control that prevents the engine from automatically returning to idle can lead to a loss of control of vehicle which could result in death or serious injury. Cleaning

Remove the following from the vehicle. See OEM manual for detailed instructions. Items to be retained for reinstallation after modification are noted.  Seat – to be re-installed; without modification.  Left and right side covers – to be re-installed after modification.  Tour Box – to be re-installed (if so equipped).  Left and right saddle bags (if so equipped).  Left and right rear crash bars, saddlebag rails (if so equipped).  Tour Box mounting frame (if so equipped).  Left and right passenger foot rests – to be re-installed without modification.  Left and right mufflers  Rear wheel NOTE: Prior to removing rear wheel, depress foot brake and secure in down position (e.g., zip-tie to floor board). This will prevent fluid flow when rear brake Caliper is removed.  Remove Rear Caliper (disconnect brake line at Caliper). NOTE: Cap line to prevent introduction of dust / debris into line. Remove Caliper
