(An attachment kit designed for the model is necessary to connect the portable audio player to this accessory.) SPEEDOMETER INSTALLATION The following procedure details the removal of the factory speedometer and installation of the digital speedometer on Softail models; however the process is similar for all other models: 1. Remove the nut and washer (item #4 in the accompanying exploded view) that secures the console (#5) to the fuel tank. 2. Lay a clean shop rag on the fuel tank and flip the console over to expose the underside of the console. 3. Separate the 12-pin harness connector (#2) from the speedometer. 4. Unscrew the rubber cover from the “trip” reset switch (#6) on t left side of the console. he 5. Remove the “trip” switch from the console. 6. Pry between the three tabs that hold the back clamp (#7) to the speedometer (#1). Remove the back clamp from the speedometer. 7. Remove the speedometer from the console. 8. Remove the gasket (#3) from the speedometer. 9. Installation is the reverse of removal. CHAPTER 3 SPEEDOMETER OPERATION When the motorcycle key switch is ON, the speedometer will enter “normal” mode. Pressing the MODE button will cycle through the following display options: Odometer (ODOM) displays the mileage since the speedometer was installed. Trip (TRIP) displays the mileage since the last time the “trip” button was pressed. Head Temp (H TEMP) displays the cylinder head temperature in degrees F. Battery V (BATT V) displays the battery voltage Fuel (FUEL) displays the fuel level in gallons. Miles Per Gallon (MPG) displays the fuel economy in miles per gallon. Place the motorcycle on a secure stand. 2.Remove the fuel tank and radiator shrouds. 3.Remove the front number plate if CDI unit is located behind number plate. 4.Remove CDI Ground from coil. 5. Remove Old CDI.b6. Remove ignition cover. 7. Use an electric, pneumatic impact to remove flywheel nut. 8. Use flywheel puller to remove flywheel. Thread the flywheel puller into the flywheel by turning the puller counter clockwise (left hand thread). Turn flywheel puller center nut clockwise with an impact set to low to remove flywheel. 9. Remove 2 bolts that secure the stator. 10. Remove stator. 11. Install new stator by aligning the index mark on the lower stator plate with the index mark on
the left crankcase. 12.Install and tighten stator bolts to 9 ft-lbs. (1.2 bkg-m). 13. Install new flywheel and tighten flywheel nut to 40ft-lb (5.5 kg-m). 14. The pulser gap is preset to .012”. If you have trouble starting you bike after installation confirm the gap between the pulser and the ignition trigger on the flywheel is .012”. Use a good/no good
technique when checking and adjusting the gap. The largest feeler that will fit without forcing the feeler into the gap is the current gap

If you have trouble starting you bike after installation confirm the gap between the pulser and the ignition trigger on the flywheel is .012″. Use a good/no good technique when checking and adjusting the gap. The largest feeler that will fit without forcing the feeler into the gap is the current gap. 15. If the pulser gap needs to be adjusted loosen the pulser mounting bolts adjust the pulser up or down as needed

The Road Star wiring is split into 2 different bundles with black connectors on the ends that were used to plug into the stock gauge cluster. Cut off both connectors. They are no longer needed The speed sensor wires on the HLY-6000 have a connector on the end that allows you to plug it directly into Harley Davidson speed sensors by using an appropriate adapter (sold separately). Luckily for us, the Road Star’s stock speed sensor will work just fine without an adapter so go ahead and cut off that connector, you don’t need it.
Ideally, the best location for the “brain box” unit of the HLY-6000 would be under the left side cover. Unfortunately, mine is full of other stuff so I had to improvise the location and decided to mount it to the back portion of the under-seat area. I would recommend that you mount yours under the left side cover though. The wires are the perfect length for that location. The brain box and wires could fit under the right side cover, but I don’t believe that the main gauge connector would reach. Using the wiring scheme on the last page of this guide, match up the wires on the Road Star with the corresponding wires on the HLY-6000 wiring harness and solder them together. Important Wiring Information: Both BLACK wires on the brain box need to be connected directly to the (-) terminal on the battery. Don’t connect them to anything else. The following wires from the Road Star are not used and can be taped off: • BLACK • RED / GREEN • BROWN The following wires from the HLY-6000 are not used and can be taped off: • GRAY • WHITE/ BLUE • WHITE (on main harness) • BROWN (*optional) The HLY-6000 has a “dimmer” function which is controlled by the BROWN wire. If you want the gauge to be bright all the time, then leave this wire disconnected. If you want the gauge to dim for night driving, then connect this wire to the GREEN Low Beam (+12v) wire

Programming the RPM The engine application and rpm activation points are easily selected through push buttons on the LED panel. This Switch can be programmed for a variety of engine and ignitions as shown below. 1-Cylinder This program is used for individual coil per cylinder systems (such as GM LS-1 engines, or ’99-Up Mustangs) 2-Cylinder This is for ignitions with coil packs that fire two cylinders at the same time (waste spark systems) 2-Cyl. Odd Use on coil pack ignitions that are on odd-fire engines such as a Viper V-10 or Harley-Davidson motorcycle. 4-Cylinder Typical 4-cylinder engines with a distributor. 6-Cylinder Typical 6-cylinder engines with a distributor. 6-Cyl. Odd Typical 6-cylinder odd-fire engines with a distributor. 8-Cylinder Typical 8-cylinder engines with a distributor. 1.2 Push Button LED Panel The rpm activation points and cylinder select are programmed through the push buttons on the LED panel (Figure 1) . Press the Mode button, and notice that the indicator point above the On RPM lights. When that point is on, you can scroll the rpm value up or down with the arrows on the left of the panel. Once your On rpm is set, push the Mode button until the Off RPM point lights, then set the off rpm point. Note that if the rpm point is not changed within 2-seconds, the screen returns to the current rpm reading (zero when the engine is not running). After setting the On and Off points, press the Mode button to program the Cylinder Select Valve (default is for 8-cyl.

For best service, you should incorporate an oiler, regulator, and inline filter, as shown in the diagram on the next page. Hoses, couplers, oilers, regulators, and filters are all available at Harbor Freight Tools. NOTE: If an automatic oiler is not used, put 3-5 drops of pneumatic Tool Oil (not included) in the Motorcycle Lift’s Quick Coupler (38A) before each use. (See Figure B, next page.) To Check The Level Of Hydraulic Oil: 1. The Motorcycle Lift already contains some hydraulic oil in its Hydraulic Pump Reservoir (32P). Even so, it is recommended that you check the oil level in the Reservoir and, if necessary, top off the Reservoir with the proper amount of 15/40 hydraulic oil (not included). (See Assy. Diagram, page 15.) 2. Make sure to screw the two Adjusting Screws clockwise enough to lift the two Caster Wheels (14) off the floor so as to provide stability for the Motorcycle Lift. (See Figure A.) 3. To check the level of hydraulic oil, remove the Sliding Plate (36) from the Platform (35) to expose the Hydraulic Pump Reservoir (32P). (See Assy. Diagrams, pages 13 and 15.) 4. Remove the rubber Filler Plug (33P) located on the top of the Reservoir (32P). If necessary, top off the Reservoir with hydraulic oil. (See Assy. Diagram, page 15.) 5. Connect the air compressor’s hose to the to the Air Motor assembly. Then turn on the air compressor and set its regulator at 120 PSI. (See Assy. Diagram, page 14.) 5. Insert the Lift Foot Pedal (11) onto the Pump Piston Spindle (9), and slowly pump the Lift Foot Pedal until a slight amount of hydraulic oil begins to leak out of the Reservoir (32P). Discontinue pumping the Lift Foot Pedal. Then, replace the Filler Plug (33P) on the top of the Reservoir. (See Assy. Diagram, page 15.) REGULATOR OILER FILTER TO QUICK COUPLER (38A) OF MOTORCYCLE LIFT FIGURE B 6. Insert the Release Foot Pedal (10) onto the Release Valve Spindle (5). Pump the Lift Foot Pedal (11) until the Platform (35) of the Motorcycle Lift reaches its maximum height. Then press down slightly on the Release Foot Pedal until the Platform is fully collapsed to the floor. Repeat this procedure several times to ensure the Motorcycle Lift is operating properly. (See Figure E, page 10.)

CHECKING OF SWITCHES Check the switches for the continuity between the terminals to determine correct connection. Read the following for switch inspection. SWITCH CONNECTION AS SHOWN IN MANUAL The manual contains a connection chart as shown left showing the terminal connections of the switches (e.g., main switch, handlebar switch, brake switch, lighting switch, etc.) The extreme left column indicates the switch positions and the top line indicates the colors of leads connected with the terminals in the switch component. “C’&-0″ indicates the terminals between which there is a continuity of electricity; i.e., a cl.osed circuit at the respective switch positions. In this chart: “R and Br” and “L/W and L/R” are continuous with the “ON” switch position. “B and B/W” is continuous with the “OFF” switch position. “B and B/W” is continuous with the “LOCK” switch position. “B and B/W” and “R and L/R” are continuous with the “P” switch position. CHECKING SWITCH FOR TERMINAL CONNECTION Before checking the switch, refer to the connection chart as shown above and check for the correct terminal connection (closed circuit) by the color combination. INSTALLATION ■ Outline Procedures This section gives general information needed for mounting the individual radio components on and in the fairing. A) Fairing 1) Install radio on fairing before mounting fairing on motorcycle. (Remove fairing from your motorcycle when already mounted). 2) Remove fairing parts. 3) Drill unit mount holes. 4) Install six wire clips. 5) Install windshield on fairing before install- ing speakers. 6) Install radio indicator I on indicator panel II , then install indicator panel on fairing. 7) Install speakers III. 8) Install nutplate IV. 9) Install Power Amplifier in fairing. 10) Install radio funer VI. 11) Install the radio controller VII. 12) Install controller base panel VIII 13) Install radio switch sub-wire. 14) Connect adapter harness and wires inside fairing by working through left turn signal lens hole. B) Motorcycle frame and handlebar 1) Remove travel trunk and seat. Unscrew four shelter bolts (M6, one on each side at front and rear) to route antenna feeder. 2) Install antenna mount and antenna IX. 3) Route antenna feeder along the frame tube. 4) Install radio switch X on left handlebar lever bracket and route the wires. 3 of 11 Page 4 C) Fairing instllation 1) Install fairing on motorcycle. 2) Connect motorcycle wire harness 9-P coupler to fairing wire 9-P coupler. 3) Connect radio switch wire to switch sub- wire.4) Connect antenna feeder. 5) Confirm that radio operates properly. Reinstall parts removed in step 2 or (A) and in step 1 of (B). REWORKING ■ Remove Fairing and Fairing Parts (Fig.10) 1) Install radio on fairing before mounting fairing on motorcycle. (Remove fairing from your motorcycle when already mounted). 2) Remove right and left fairing pockets, right and left turn signal lenses, right and left nutplates, left hole cover and indi- cator base panel from fairing. (Fig.10) Fig. 10 LEI-1 NU I PLATE 4 of 11■ Reworking on Fairing — Speaker mounting holes- 1) Remove 18 mm grommet. 2) Lightly roll template so that it will follow contour of fairing snugly. 3) Position template on fairing with its upper and outer edges aligned with those offairing as indicated by arrows. 4) Attach template to fairing using adhesive tape where shown. 5) Punch mark centers of four holes with a
drift and hammer. 6) Drill 6 mm holes through marked centers. To obtain a more balanced response with richer, deeper bases, drill two 50 mm holes in the fairing so as to link the speaker box with the inside of the fairing. Fig. 11-1
