Oil Temperature and Gauge 2.1. Introduction My 1998 BMW R1100RT came with an LCD temperature gauge that shows horizontal black bars in a vertical motif, to indicate temperature. This is difficult to interpret at speed (how many bars are exposed?) and does not actually tell me what the oil temperature is. 2.2. Normal Operation The bike seems to run at 5 or six bars under normal conditions. It appears that the oil thermostat for the cooler is set to ’5 bars’. 2.3. Over Heating The LCD panel indicates that 8 bars is the maximum normal operating temperature. It would be useful to know what the actual temperature is. Modern oils have a normal operating temperature of approximately 110 degrees Celsius and will not show any serious degradationii at this temperature. The maximum sustained operating temperature (at the bearing surface) is approximately 130 degrees Celsius for any oil formulated in the past 5 years and some high performance synthetics will not appreciably degrade even at this temperature. However, the degradation curve is a polynomial and degradation will increase rapidly with increasing temperature. According to the oil’s formulation (pure synthetics will show the least increase with temperature), by approximately 160 degrees Celsius (or about 300 degrees Fahrenheit), oil degradation can be up to 10 times faster then at 110 Deg. C. 2.4. Scale To fix the ‘number of bars’ problem, I determined that an overlay with numbers would be the best idea. 2.4.1. Addendum The number scale became too much to maintain. Rather than this, I cut a mm or so wide stripe out of the self sticking stripping meant for the side of a car. Using a red material, I put it through the middle of the fifth bar of both the temperature and fuel display. The stripe is slightly smaller than the thickness of the bar. This allows me to tell when I am at normal operating temperature and when approximately half a tank is used

LCD DIPSTICK INSTALLATION 1. Remove the original equipment (OE) dipstick from the filler neck. 2. Non-threaded Dipsticks: Lightly oil the O-ring on the new LCD dipstick. Orient the dipstick so that the display window is horizontal and readable from left to right, with the Bar and Shield logo to the left (towards the rear of the motorcycle). Push the dipstick straight into the filler neck until it seats. 3. For threaded dipsticks: Lightly oil O-ring and screw into the transmission like OE dipstick. If the orientation of the display is unsatisfactory when fully seated, refer to Adjusting the Display Angle later in these instructions. NOTE To be sure of correct readings, the dipstick MUST seat firmly against the flange. LCD DIPSTICK USE AND CARE Removing the Dipstick The dipstick assembly must be removed from the filler neck to add oil or to service the internal battery. Displaying the Oil Temperature and Level See Figure 1. Press and release the rubber button on the front face to display the temperature of the oil in the oil tank in degrees Fahrenheit (°F), and the oil level. The display will automatically shut off after approximately ten seconds. Do not overfill oil tank. Doing so can result in oil carryover to the air cleaner leading to equipment damage and/or equipment malfunction. (00190a) NOTES Oil level cannot be accurately measured: • on a cold engine • with the motorcycle upright • with the engine running NOTE Oil level on 2000 through 2004 Softail models with the original dipstick is checked with the motorcycle standing upright (not leaning on the jiffy stand). THIS IS NOT THE CASE with the LCD oil temperature/level dipstick. For all 2000 and later Softail models, oil level inspection must be done with the motorcycle LEANING ON the jiffy stand, on level ground. For pre-ride oil level inspection: With the motorcycle on level ground, RESTING ON the jiffy stand : •The oil level should be as indicated in Figure 1, display 4 through 8 (bars showing oil level, and “COLD OIL” message followed by flashing oil temperature) when the engine is cold. DO NOT ADD OIL to bring the level to the FULL mark on the dipstick of a COLD engine. •If the oil level indicates as in display 9 (animated level bars, followed by an “888 NO SENSOR” code), the wires inside the dipstick may be disconnected or damaged. Refer to Replacing the Battery later in these instructions to separate the dipstick upper and lower assemblies. If the small plug next to the battery has become dislodged from the receptacle, plug it in. If a visible wire is damaged, a repair can be attempted. If no damage is visible, the dipstick is damaged internally and should be replaced. For oil level inspection at operating temperature: Ride the motorcycle until the engine is at normal operating temperature. Idle for 1-2 minutes with the motorcycle on level ground, RESTING ON the jiffy stand (except Softails) , turn the engine OFF.

Setup operations include 12/24hour clock, bar tachometer scale, shift warning RPM, numbers of engine rotation per signal, wheel circumference, units, odometer adjustment, units of temperature, temperature warning and fuel meter input resistance selection. These must be set up step by step. The computer will automatic reversion to main screen if no button operation for 75 seconds at any setting screen. 2. Press both MODE & RESET buttons to go into setting screen. In setting screens, press RESET button to add the flashing digit by 1 or convert units, press MODE button to confirm the digit setting and jump to next digit or next setting screen to be set. Press MODE button for 2 seconds at any setting screen to finish the setting and go to main screen. 3. It displays “12 or 24H and XX:XX-XX” symbols and AM/PM in case you select 12H. Operates buttons as descriptions of item 2 to finish clock and jump to 8,000/16,000rpm scale setting. 4. It displays 8,000rpm scale, presess RESET button to convert 8,000 or 16,000rpm. Press MODE button to confirm the setting and jump to shift RPM warning setting. 5. It displays ” RPM rXXX00 “. Follow the item 2 of button operation to finish the shift RPM warning setting and jump to engine specification setting. 6. It displays “SPC-X.X RPM”, the default value is 1.0; there are 4 options: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 0.5. It means the numbers of engine rotation per signal. For example the value 2.0 means the engine rotate 2 turns to output a signal. 7. Press RESET button to move in loop sequence from one to another value of the 4 values. Press MODE button to confirm the setting and go to wheel circumference setting screen. 8. In “cXXXX” display, “c” means “Circumference”, following 4 default digits; flashing digit is digit to be set. Follow the item 2 of button operation to finish the wheel circumference setting and jump to unit setting. 9. It displays KM/h or MPH, each press of RESET button converts unit; press MODE button to confirm unit setting and jump to odometer setting. 10. It displays “ODO & 00000Xkm”, the “X” is tested odometer in factory, follow item 2 to setting a desired odometer and jump to thermometer unit setting. The setting screen will disappear when the odometer is over 30km or your setting is over 30km and returned to main screen. 11. It displaysm ” , or oFF”, each press of RESET button converts , or oFF; press MODE button to confirm temperature setting and jump to temperature warning setting. 12. It displays ” XXX” and the selected unit. Follow the item 2 of button operation to finish the temperature warning setting and go to fuel sensor input resistance setting. 13. It displays “100r and fuel tank symbol”, follow the item 2 to select 100, 250, 510 Ohm or oFF and return to the main screen. The fuel meter bar will disappear if you select oFF mode.

Always follow the proper starting procedure described below. Your motorcycle can be kickstarted wirh the transmission in gear by pulling in the clutch lever before operating the kickstarter. Preparation Make sure that the transmission is in neutral. Turn the fuel valve ON. Fuel Valve Starting Procedure Always follow the proper starting procedure described as follow. 4. Warm up the engine; don’t operate the throttle. 5. About 15 seconds after the engine startes, push the choke knob back all the way to fully OFF. If idling is unstable, open the throttle slightly. Extended use of the choke may impair piston and cylinder wall lubrication and damage the engine. High Air Temperature 35°C (95°F) or above 1. Do not use the choke. 2. Keep the throttle fully closed. 3. Start the engine following step 3 under Normal Air Temperature. Low Air Temperature 10°C (50°) or below 1. Follow steps 1-4 under Normal Air Temperature. 2. Continue warming up the engine until it runs smoothly and responds to the throttle when the choke knob is pushed back all the way to fully OFF. Extended use of the choke may impair piston and cylinder wall lubrication and damage the engine. Hot Engine Starting 1. Pull the hot start lever (3) and start the engine following step 3 under Normal Air Temperature. 2. As soon as the engine starts, release the hot start lever. NOTICE NOTICE Basic Operating Instructions 15 (1) fuel valve The three-way fuel valve is used to control the flow of fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor. ON -Turning the fuel valve ON before attempting to start the engine allows fuel to flow from the fuel tank to the carburetor. OFF -Turning the fuel valve OFF after stopping the engine prevents the flow of fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor. RES -Turning the fuel valve to RES allows fuel to flow from the reserve fuel supply to the carburetor. (1) fuel valve (2) choke knob Check the engine oil, transmission oil and coolant levels before starting the engine (pages 44,47,48). To restart a warm engine, follow the procedure for ”High Air Temperature. ” Normal Air Temperature 10°C-35°C (50°F-95°F) 1. Pull the choke knob (2) up all the way to fully ON, if the engine is cold. 2. Keep the throttle fully closed. 3. Pull the clutch lever all the way in, and press the starter button with the throttle completely closed. Or operate the kickstarter to start the engine. Starting from the top of the stroke, kick through to the bottom with a rapid, continuous motion. Do not operate the throttle. Allowing the kickstarter to snap back freely against the pedal stop can damage the engine case.
