REMOVAL 1. See Figure 3. Remove button-head screw (A) that attaches battery cover (B) to battery tray (C). 2. See Figure 1. Remove battery cover by lifting it over the two tabs on the battery tray. NOTE The original equipment battery cover trim has four pinch tabs on the reverse side that attach it to the battery cover. 3. See Figure 2. Remove original equipment battery cover trim from battery cover by pushing the four pinch tabs out of the battery cover using a pliers or suitable tool. INSTALLATION 1. Place battery cover over the two tabs on battery tray (C) and attach it to battery tray with button-head screw (A). Tighten screw to 20-40 in-lbs (2.3-4.6 Nm). 2. Obtain chrome battery cover trim (1) from kit. 3. Using a 50/50 isopropyl alcohol/water solution, thoroughly clean the surface where the chrome trim will be installed. Let it dry completely. NOTE Test the trim mount fit prior to removing the adhesive backing from the chrome battery cover trim. 4. Remove adhesive liner from the chrome battery cover trim. NOTE The ideal temperature should be at least 60° F (16° C) for proper adhesion of the chrome trim on the battery cover. 5. Center and install chrome trim onto the battery cover. Apply firm pressure for one minute using a cloth to prevent scratching the battery cover and battery trim. 6. Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours at no less than 60° F (16° C)

1. Follow the instructions in your Owner’s Manual to remove the seat and any other components (side covers, etc.) necessary to provide access to the battery. 2. Refer to the applicable view in Figure 1 for your model. Break the battery negative (-) connection by removing the hardware assembly from the negative battery terminal. 3. Break the positive (+) battery connection by removing the hardware assembly from the positive battery terminal. 4. Clean the battery terminals and cable connectors using a wire brush or sandpaper to remove any oxidation. 5. Apply a light coating of Harley-Davidson electrical contact lubricant (Part Number 99861-02) to the battery terminals, cable connectors, battery charging harness ring terminals and connector located under the weather- shield cap. Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a) 6. Refer to the view in Figure 1 used for disassembly. Install the positive (RED) lead of the harness to the positive (+) battery post following the sequence shown. • On 1999 and earlier models (with original equipment), torque the positive (+) terminal post bolt to 40 in-lbs (4.5 Nm). • On 2000 and later models (with original equipment), torque the positive (+) terminal post bolt to 60-96 in-lbs (6.8-10.9 Nm). 7. Attach the negative (BLACK) lead of the harness to the negative (-) battery post following the sequence shown. • On 1999 and earlier models (with original equipment), torque the negative (-) terminal post bolt to 40 in-lbs (4.5 Nm). • On 2000 and later models (with original equipment), torque the negative (-) terminal post bolt to 60-96 in-lbs (6.8-10.9 Nm). Harness Routing Do not route the harness near any moving parts. Contact with moving parts may result in damage to harness. Refer to the following sections to determine the correct harness routing for your model. Be sure to avoid any components that may pinch or cut the harness, and avoid components that radiate heat. Take up any slack in the cable and store out of sight. Secure the harness with cable straps (H-D Part Number 10006), which can be purchased separately from any Harley Davidson Dealer. VRSC Model Harness Routing 1. See Figure 2. Route the battery harness/ connector (3) toward the front of the bike following the upper left frame tube. Cleanly tuck the in-line fuse (2) into the space in front of the battery. 2. Continue to route the harness/ gray connector to the front of the bike and behind the vent cover. Secure the harness with a cable strap and let the connector protrude past the cover for easy access. Trim any excess from the cable strap

CARE AND MAINTENANCE Voltmeter Test See Table 2. The voltmeter test provides a general indicator of battery condition. Check the voltage of the battery to verify that it is in a 100% fully-charged condition. If the open circuit (disconnected) voltage reading is below 12.7 V, charge the battery and then check the voltage again after the battery has set for one to two hours. If the voltage reading is 12.7 V or above, perform a load test. Table 2. INSTALLATION In order to install The Freak, the factory air-box must be removed. Because of it’s design, the factory air-box is not an item that is easily removed. There are several parts that must be removed in order to get the air-box out of the bike in one piece. We recommend using the following method to remove your air box without having to cut it into smaller pieces in order to get it out of the frame. 1. PARTS REMOVAL In order to gain access to the air-box, it is necessary to remove certain parts of the motorcycle to gain access to the air-box area of the frame. Removing the following parts should be the first steps you take. A. Seats – Remove both seats starting with the passenger pillion, if applicable. B. Side cover and grommets – Remove the plastic side cover on the right side (throttle side) of your motorcycle. This is the faux oil-tank cover that has the name of your bike on it. Underneath the side cover there are three rubber grommets (1 on the frame tab, and two on the air-box) that support the side cover. Remove the two that are on the air-box and leave the one on the frame. You will attach the two that you removed to the right side bracket in Section 4C . C. Faux air filter covers – On the right side of the bike, remove the chrome faux air filter covers, by removing the one allen head screw that holds it onto the air-box. On the left hand side (clutch side) remove the faux air filter cover in the same manner, you removed the one on the right. D. Plastic shrouds – on the left side, remove the black plastic air-box shroud, by removing the two allen head screws holding it in place. Then remove the plastic shroud covering your fuse box (this is the piece that surrounds your ignition terminal next to the battery). E. Battery – Remove the battery by unscrewing the torx-head bolt that holds the chrome bracket in place. Remove the chrome bracket and the black plastic cap. Tilt the battery out of the box with the top towards you. Disconnect both battery terminal connectors, negative (-) terminal first. Remove the battery. F. Battery box – Remove the two bolts that hold the battery box to the frame. Pull the battery box out as far as you can, then remove the the ignition terminal from the battery box, by removing the two allen screws that hold it in place from the back. Next, remove the fuse box from the battery box, by pushing it out from the back. It is not necessary to disconnect any of the wiring going to the fuse box, or the ignition terminal. G. Rear fender – Remove the rear fender, by first disconnecting the taillight wires. Follow the wires from the tail light assembly on the inside of the rear fender (left side) towards the front of the bike until you come to the box connector. Disconnect the tail light wires at this connector, being careful not to break it. Once the wiring is disconnected, remove the 6 bolts that hold it to the struts. Have someone hold the fender for you while you are removing all of the bolts so that it does not drop once the bolts are removed. Slide the fender out the rear of the bike. 2. PREPARE THE MOTORCYCLE FOR AIR-BOX REMOVAL To remove the factory air-box without damaging it, it is necessary to lift the bike. We recommend the use of a multi-position ATV/motorcycle jack with a minimum lift height of 10″. A. Setting up the lift – Place the lift under your bike and secure your bike to the lift according to the lift manufacturer’s instructions. B. Raise slightly – Lift the motorcycle to the point where the rear springs are without tension, but NOT to where the rear tire is off the ground. C. Remove the rear springs – Take off each of the rear springs by removing the the two bolts on each spring. Once all the bolts are removed gently pull the springs out off of the studs. If they do not pull off easily, you can raise or lower the bike slightly with the lift to ease tension on the spring. Remember, you should not have the rear tire off the ground at this point. The bike should only be raised enough to relax the tension in the springs. D. Remove the mufflers – Remove the mufflers by loosening the clamp at the exhaust header, and by removing the rear foot peg hangers. If the mufflers are not removed, they can become damaged by the axles in Section 2H . E. Disconnect the carburetors – With a small flathead screwdriver, pull the retainer springs out of the channel of the carburetor intake tubes (the two large black tubes coming from the air box into the back of each carburetor), and simply push them towards the air box off of the carbs

CAUTIONS IN SERVICING CONNECTOR • * When connecting a connector, be sure to push it in until a click is felt. • * Inspect the connector for corrosion, contamination and breakage in its cover . ( r- 79-14 to 9-16) • * Bend the clamp properly so that the wire harness is clamped securely. • * In clamping the wire harness, use care not to allow it to hang down. • * Do not use wire or any other substitute for the band type clamp. FUSE • * When a fuse blows, always investigate the cause, correct it and then replace the fuse . • * Do not use a fuse of a different capacity . • * Do not use wire or any other substitute for the fuse . i SEMI-CONDUCTOR EQUIPPED PART • * Be careful not to drop the part with a semi-conductor built in such as a ECM. • * When inspecting this part, follow inspection instruction strictly . Neglecting proper procedure may cause damage to this part . BATTERY • The MF battery used in this motorcycle does not require maintenance (e.g., electrolyte level inspection, distilled water replenishment) . • * During normal charging, no hydrogen gas is produced. However, if the battery is overcharged, hydrogen gas may be produced. Therefore, be sure there are no fire or spark sources (e.g., short circuit) nearby when charging the battery . • * Be sure to recharge the battery in a well-ventilated and open area. •Note that the charging system for the MF battery is different from that of a conventional battery. Do not replace the MF battery with a conventional battery . CONNECTING THE BATTERY •When disconnecting terminals from the battery for disassembly or servicing, be sure to disconnect the O battery lead wire, first. • * When connecting the battery lead wires, be sure to connect the OO battery lead wire, first . • * If the terminal is corroded, remove the battery, pour warm water over it and clean it with a wire brush . • * After connecting the battery, apply a light coat of grease to the battery terminals. • * Install the cover over the O battery terminal. WIRING PROCEDURE • * Properly route the wire harness according to the “WIRE ROUTING” section. (C’9-14 to 9-16) ELECTRICAL SYSTEM 8- 3
8-4 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM USING THE MULTI CIRCUIT TESTER •Properly use the multi circuit tester Oand Oprobes. Improper use can cause damage to the motorcycle and tester. • * If the voltage and current values are not known, begin measuring in the highest range . • * When measuring the resistance, make sure that no voltage is applied. If voltage is applied, the tester will be damaged . • * After using the tester, be sure to turn the switch to the OFF position. CAUTION Before using the multi circuit tester, read its instruction manual.

Secure the center stand to one of the forward crash bars with a ratchet strap to keep vehicle from rolling forward and off the center stand. Be sure that the vehicle is laterally stable as well. Remove the following from the vehicle. See OEM manual for detailed instructions. From the manufacturer, your Honda Gold Wing brake system utilizes both front and rear brakes when the foot brake is applied. In order to insure safe operation of your Gold Wing when converted to a Champion Sidecars Trike, the brake system must be modified to isolate the front and rear brake systems from each other. Once modification is complete, four of the six pistons in the front calipers operate only when the hand brake lever is applied. The rear brakes operate only when the foot brake pedal is applied. The diagrams below outline the difference between the GL1800 OEM brake system and the system as modified by the Champion Sidecars Trike Conversion Kit.

1. Tire Pressure and Rotation : Keep the nominal tire pressure at about 23-27psig. It is not necessary to periodically rotate the trike tires unless you experience unusual tire wear. 2. Bearing Lubrication . Your Swing Arm and wheel bearings are sealed and do not require greasing. However, should you experience unusual wheel bearing noise you should take your trike to a Champion Trike Dealer or to your motorcycle mechanic for a checkup. 3. Body Lubrication . There are no grease fittings on the trike body and no required body lubrication points. 4. Rear end lubrication . Your differential comes filled with SAE 85W140 API GL-6 gear oil. You should not have to top-off the differential unless you experience axle seal or pinion seal leaks. If you want to check the oil level, do so by removing the fill plug on the top of the differential housing (Remove seat) and by using a suitable measuring device, the oil level should be 5 1/4″ inch down from the top of the differential housing. Refill as necessary. Change the differential oil every 30,000 – 35,000 miles by draining it and refill with 2 quarts of above gear oil.. 5. Brakes . Check your front and rear brake system fluid levels every 3,000 miles and top-off as necessary. Inspect brake pads every 10,000 miles and replace as necessary. Rear brake pads are Volkswagen Part # D101P. 6. Drive Train . The rear driveshaft U-joint and slip yoke spline are fitted with grease fittings, pump the fittings with wheel-bearing, graphite or high-pressure grease every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The front u-joint does not have grease fittings. 7. Suspension System : The suspension is a Double A-arm Independent suspension with a standard single setting anti-roll bar or an optional Variable Sway Control (VSC) which can be adjustment for optimal ride, handling characteristics and performance. The A- arms are equiped with bushings that does not require servicing. The suspension system is designed to give you the best ride with a load of no more than 600 pounds (passengers plus cargo plus trailer tongue weight): 8. EZ-Steer (rake kit) : If your trike is equipped with Champion’s EZ-Steer, the bearings are a wear item. You should follow your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended front-end triple-tree maintenance requirements. Generally these call for an initial service at 1,000 miles followed by periodic maintenance at 10,000 mile intervals
