BRAKING SYSTEMS The braking systems used on motorcycles and ATVs, like virtually any type of braking system, reduce the machine’skineticenergyby transforming it into heat energy known as friction heat . Therefore, a brake is an energy-conversion device that converts the energy of motion (kinetic energy) into heat energy. Motorcycle braking is accomplished by the friction (resistance to movement) produced when a brake lining is forced against a rotating drum or disc. Friction between the linings and drum or disc serve to slow and eventually stop wheel rotation. The brakes used on motorcycles fall into two categories: Mechanical drum, sometimes called expanding shoe Hydraulic disc Motorcycle brakes commonly use either hydraulic (fluid pressure) or mechanical (cable or linkage) mechanisms to apply the brakes. Brakes, Wheel Assemblies, and Tires 1 Mechanical Drum Brakes First, let’slookatthedrum brake, sometimes called the mechanical, expanding double-shoe brake ( Figure 1 ). Generally used for rear wheels, this brake is also used on some front wheels. With this kind of brake, a backing plate that’sconnectedtothe forks holds the two brake shoes. The wheel and brake drum rotate around the brake shoes. When the rider applies the brake, a cam pushes the two semicircular shoes outward. The circle formed by the two shoes expands. When the shoes expand, they press against the rotating drum, thereby limiting its free rotation

Expose the sensor to light from a distance of 300 mm (11.81 in.) or less with an inspection light. NOTE: Terminal 1 of the sensor is always on the right, when the lock is facing up. When using an analog tester, connect the positive (+) lead to terminal 2 and negative (-) lead to terminal 1 of the solar sensor. HINT: If the light is weak, the sensor may not react. Be sure to use an incandescent light for an inspection light

1. Remove OEM Tail Unit from Motorcycle (ref: underside four socket head bolts). 2. Disconnect all electrical connections (ref: Turn indicators & License light). 3. Remove Turn indicators from OEM Tail unit and install on to Skyking Products License Plate Relocation Assembly using OEM hardware. 4. Remove License light from OEM Tail unit and install on to Skyking Products License Plate Relocation Assembly using OEM hardware. 5. Reconnect all electrical connections. Install wire loom for connector protection and secure with tie wraps . (ref: Turn indicators & License light). 6. Install Skyking Products License Plate Relocation Assembly using OEM hardware. 7. Double check all hardware and electrical are secure. 8. Check proper operation of Turn indicators and license light. 9. Test ride and final check proper operation of Turn indicators and license light.

Installation: 1. Remove the fork springs according to the OEM Owner’s Manual. 2. Check/adjust fork oil level and weight according to OEM Specifications. Caution: Most inverted forks will not require the use of any shim washers or spacers. In cases where use is necessary with the twin chamber style fork, the shims must be placed at the bottom of the spring. Most conventional forks (non-inverted) will use shim washers or spacers at the top of the fork spring. 3. Install Factory Connection fork springs and refer to OEM Owner’s Manual for proper assembly procedures. 4. Be sure to double check all fasteners. Note: Most modern day forks require special tools for disassembly and assembly of the components. Examples : Showa 47/49mm Twin Chamber, KYB 48mm Twin Chamber, WP 07 SX Models/SXS Components. Installing fork springs is an intricate process that should be performed with extreme care by a qualified suspension technician. Failure to install the springs correctly could cause damage to one or more components of the fork. This damage, although not readily apparent, could lead to unexpected failure or rider injury. Factory Connection manufactures models specific fork springs. Installation of a Factory Connection spring not designed for your motorcycle may result in unexpected failure and rider injury. Please consult your Factory Connection spring dealer or call Factory Connection directly if you are unsure about a spring/or springs. 1. tires: Tires are the first part of any suspension system. The design of the tire and even the pressure you run can have a profound affect on the way your motorcycle handles. Stiff, low profile tires will give a sharper feel to the bike, as will higher tire pressures. Those of us who ride our GS’s off the road will decrease the tire pressure to about 50% of the street spec when we are in the dirt. The tire then becomes a very active part of the suspension, but will wallow like an old pig if not re-inflated when pressed back into pavement duty. It still surprises me when we have a customer complain that his BMW needs new shocks when they come in with nearly flat tires. It is possible that the best dollars-per- unit improvement you can make to your BMW may be in keeping the tires inflated. Chassis: There is not much that we can do about the chassis design, unless we are Troy the Welder, but it is a fact that different frames and swing arms flex differently and therefore are part of the suspension. On the Airheads, we often braced various parts of the frame and swing arms, resulting in improved handling that even mere mortals could appreciate. On the latest BMW’s it would take the likes of a Valentino Rossi to even notice if the parts were stiffened. Stiffer is not always better. One of the Japanese racing bike manufactures controls the stiffness of the frame in various areas to allow some flex for better handling. So, Mr. Rossi might not even like it if Troy stiffened his new BMW. Springs: Springs control the ride height of the motorcycle and the ability to allow for different loads. On most BMW’s there is a way to adjust the spring preload to some extent so that the ride can be optimized for a light rider or two-up operation with luggage. Dampers: Dampers control the speed and frequency at which the suspension operates by changing the kinetic (moving) energy to thermal (heat) energy. Without the damper, the suspension would oscillate as each movement occurred, resulting in decreased vehicle control. Dampers on BMW’s fall into two main groups. On airheads, older K bikes, F and G models, and the R1200 HP-2, the front dampers are integrated into the forks. On the rear of the above mentioned -3 – models, and on both ends of all the rest of the bikes, there is a more common shock absorber, around which the spring is located. The HP-2 uses an air spring and air dampened rear shock. Seat: OK, folks, this is here for my old buddy Jeff. We know that a seat isn’t part of suspension, but a bad one sure can make you miserable. The following explains some technical aspects of the Enhancer Ignition. Battery: The battery is necessary to the operation of the Enhancer in two regards. • The battery supplies voltage to the complex timing feature of the Enhancer.
• The Enhancer has a built in boost circuit that amplifies the spark energy at low rpm where the stock magneto is insufficient. The MSD NiCad Battery pack, PN 4381, must be charged with the recommended battery charger or an MSD Fast Charger, PN 4385. The battery should be completely discharged before recharging. If a 7.2 Battery Charger is used, the recommended time for charging is seven hours. With the MSD Fast Charger the battery only needs to charge for one hour. Note: No fast charger besides the MSD Fast Charger may be used to charge the MSD NiCad Battery. Damage to the battery will occur. Timing: The Enhancer Ignition allows the user to adjust the ignition timing curve to optimize engine
power output. This is done by rotating the potentiometer shaft located on the back of the ignition. Clockwise rotation retards the timing while counterclockwise advances the timing (Figure 1). Coil: The MSD Enhancer Ignition System includes a special Pro CD Coil. This coil has an extremely low primary resistance and a high turns ratio to produce maximum spark energy. The Pro CD Coil is encapsulated in a Rynite compound that is impervious to contaminates and vibration. Note: Do not use the stock coil with the Enhancer Ignition

5/16 Bolt hole boss clearance This can easily be checked with the trap door gasket. Put the gasket on the dowel pins. AII material of the boss around the hole that “sticks outside” the gasket (60 degrees forward to 60 degree backwards) must be removed (see figure A).
