The Magic Box? The TRE and Low End Performance of the 2006 ZX- 14 Evaluated

The dawn of the internal combustion engine gave birth to motorsport, and in turn gave birth to enthusiasts, and the gearheads who tinkered with engines squeezing those last final ounces of power out of their machines in an effort to be the fastest on the block. Along with the gearheads came the inventors, promising a quick fix for those less technically inclined. Even in today’s modern world where specifically engineered computer controlled digital componentry dictates the operation of our everyday lives, enthusiasts still seek out that magic box, gadget or pill that will unleash hidden horsepower held back by a perpetual X-Files like government conspiracy. We’ve all seen the likes of it, and certainly the Internet has played (more often than not) into the hands of modern-day Snake Oil salesman, working the forums through a network of communications like “pss-t.. my buddy knows a guy who used this thing and I swear I gained 20 hp”. The inevitable debate ensues, usually ending up with a lack of hard data and the marketers throwing “seat of the pants” stories out there in an effort to sell their product. Today’s story is a little different. The release of the ZX-14 and the birth of ZX- 14.com has possibly, for the first time, brought together a group of riders and technicians who not only have the technical skill, knowledge and background, but also the facilities, industry positioning and resources to once and for all determine if today’s Magic Box, the “TRE”, lives up to its claims. Sit back and read the Tale of the TRE… Things couldn’t have been going better for Ivan Rovinsky before the ZX-14 hit the streets. As a renowned tuner and developer of his TRE, the “Timing Retard Eliminator”, Ivan had shared many years of success marketing his TRE to customers on the Internet through model specific enthusiast forums. More often than not, no one could really put their finger on exactly WHAT the TRE did, though some had their suspicions. Many riders couldn’t deny that the TRE did something, but what it did, no one was exactly sure. This left the TRE and Ivan in a sort of Internet “grey area”, him and his product being sent off into the annals of myth and folklore. Perhaps he HAD invented the Magic Box? No one was sure, but at the same time no one could state otherwise. Advertising on a few sites, but covertly marketing on others brought some heat and unwanted attention to Ivan, mostly for his unpaid advertising tactics. Disgruntled webmasters had their hands full with Ivan and his friends, even on this site, but at the same time no one could state either way as to what the TRE did, or how it did it, and certainly no one wanted to get rid of him. What if Ivan was right? You wouldn’t want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. Two Worlds Collide When the ZX-14 community got wind that their bikes had been neutered by KHI for low end performance, readers immediately went to work to try to solve the problem, and so begins the undoing of the Ivan myth, and finally some resolution to explain exactly what happens and why. The timing couldn’t have been worse for Ivan, as he stepped into the forum of online ZX-14 chat. He had expected the same age-old response to his product; mystified acceptance . He had been down this road before, so as a seasoned veteran of underground marketing, certainly the ZX-14 would be no different…. but this time things would be different. The ZX-14 is a unique motorcycle and its owners bring a unique and distinct wealth of information to the table.

Break-in of this camshaft is important and you should adhere to all of the following instructions. It is also very important to use plenty of engine assembly lubricant, recommended is Coastal Engine Assembly Lube or Clevite 77, both are available from most automotive supply companies. We recommend you change the engine oil before the initial start-up of the engine after the assembly. Then change the oil again after the break-in of the cams to remove the excess
phosphate from the coated cams. These steps will help ensure that the camshaft breaks-in properly and that you have a long lasting product. Using full synthetic engine oil during break-in is not recommended but, is OK to use after the one-hour break-in period is over. Following a regular maintenance schedule is the best way to ensure durability and performance over the long run. Cleanliness is always a good place to start. Make sure the motorcycle is cleaned thoroughly before you start. It would be advisable to use an engine degreaser on the frame and the engine. Remove the fuel tank and thoroughly clean the inside of the frame rails, around the carburetor, and behind the radiators. Be sure to remove the ignition coil assembly and using high-pressure air, clean the spark plug hole out before the plug is removed. This will ensure a clean engine during the assembly process and less of a chance of thread damage and/or dirt contamination in the engine during reassembly

“Our focus is on delivering a motorcycle that fits the needs of the new market. It seems that so many companies are trying to revamp their line by adding a sixth gear. We’re taking the gears completely out of the equation and letting riders get back to actually riding”, said Clay Ridley about the effort his company has directed towards their new product line. Several new unique features are creating interest among Ridley Riders on the company’s riders forum, one of which is a parking brake. “We take comments from the owners of our motorcycles very, very seriously. Ridley Riders have asked for a parking brake for added security”, commented Jay Ridley, Vice President for the company. Added to the long list of improvements for the new year model is the new “2 Year Plus” factory warranty which offers twenty-five months of factory backed warranty. According to Ridley, this new warranty exceeds coverage provided by most other domestic manufacturer’s. One more reason Ridley believes 2008 will be the company’s best selling year model. With the holiday season fast approaching, Ridley Motorcycle felt the introduction of the new models would have more impact if held back until the middle of November. For Ridley, the holiday season means big business. Several of Ridley’s dealers have reported higher sales in December than in May. The company attributed this to their market which is nearly divided in half among men and women.

REMOVE THE SEAT Remove the seat bolt at the rear of the seat with a 4mm hex key. To remove the seat, grasp both sides of the seat, lift the rear of the seat slightly, and pull the seat to the rear of the bike. The front of the seat engages onto bolts on either side of the fuel tank and can be stubborn. THIS KIT ALSO CONTAINS: © 2009 California Cycleworks, Inc. Questions? Email orders@ca-cycleworks.com 1

makes the most patient equipment manager’s jaw get tight. It’s a messy process that involves draining, disassembly, flushing, and days of downtime. Now, our dealership offers a new, more thorough, less invasive solution to hydraulic contamination that can be brought right to your jobsite. It’s called the Ultra Clean®System. The innovative Ultra Clean hose and tube cleaning system removes contamination by using a pneumatic launcher to shoot a projectile through hydraulic lines and hoses. A “shelled” pump can send a lot of metal debris downstream with the last few gallons of oil that flow through the system. Flushing hydraulic lines with solvent and air can be tedious, and sometimes ineffective, but the Ultra Clean system makes decontaminating hydraulic systems fast and easy. It also lets you skip the hassle of handling and disposing harsh chemicals. It is as simple as disconnecting both ends of a line or hose and launching the specially designed projectile through it. “The Ultra Clean system is more efficient than any other method we’ve tried,” says Scott Dickey, Service Manager, Murphy Tractor, the John Deere dealership in Lincoln, Nebraska. “We no longer worry about the time and expense of hose replacement and tube disassembly for repair service. Ultra Clean is clearly superior than flushing with solvents and air blow-down.” Dickey says the Ultra Clean system is also used to prepare fabricated hose assemblies for over-the-counter sales at his dealership. He points out it has increased the value of parts and service by assuring delivery of cleaned assemblies that are ready for service. Logo sealing tape covers the open assembly ends and assures the customer that the assembly has been cleaned. It also serves as a reminder to keep contamination out of the system when the new assembly is put into place. Cleaning fabricated hoses right after they are constructed is another way in which dealers are taking a proactive approach to reducing contamination in hydraulic systems and reducing the risk of contam- ination. DataTrending Is A Road Map to Less Downtime. It’s important to understand that a little dirt can cost a lot of money if you let it get into your hydraulic system. Dirt circulating in your hydraulic fluid grates like a belt sander on internal machine parts. Trending, along with a proactive approach to contamination control and elimination, can help you prevent this scary scenario. “A little bit of contamination can cause lots of wear and tear in just a short time,” explains Mike Daly, fluid analysis program marketing manager for John Deere Construction & S

Experience has shown that when a customer disassembles, it creates a storage issue for us as well as parts are generally missing. The disassembly usually costs us extra hours of work during the rebuild. The only acceptable part to be removed from an assembly is the cable bracket if it is fragile and in danger of breaking during shipping. All other parts should be where they belong.
