Removing The Stock Components Although the PM Drive Side Brake System can be installed with the swing arm bolted to the frame, we recommend removing it for better access as well as repainting. Begin by removing rear wheel,stock brake components and belt guard from swing arm. Photo #1 Using supplied 3/4 x 2″bolt,position Drive Side BrakeAssembly on swing arm. Slide assembly to center position of tab and axle spans. Making sure brake mounting tabs are flush with swing arm,snug 3/4 x 2″ bolt to hold assembly and mark swing arm area to be ground Photo #2 . Remove entire assembly from swing arm and thoroughly grind paint away from marked areas Photo #3 . Photo #4 Re-mount assembly to swing arm and slide to rear-most position of both axle and brake mounting tabs. Confirm that brake tabs are flush with swing arm and parallel to each other. Snug 3/4 x 2″bolt and 5/16″socket head cap screws in tabs to hold assembly during welding process. Warning Center the motorcycle on the lift so that it will not fall while you are working on it. Avoid excessive welding near brake as- sembly as heat can mar finish. Loosen socket head cap screws and 3/4″bolt,Slide entire assembly to forward most position and re tighten bolts Photo #6 (movement should require minimal effort if tabs are aligned properly) and tack front of tabs to swing arm. Remove brake assembly from swing arm. Weld tabs to swing arm.Verify alignment of tabs, as they must remain parallel to each other. Repaint swing arm and re-install on bike to factory torque specs. Installing Brake Assembly Remove primary bracket from tower assembly (this allows bracket to be installed without having to line up caliper on disc) by removing the three 5/16″socket head cap screws (commonly called allen bolts). Photo #7 Mount rear tire and bolt pulley to rear wheel. Place disassembled bracket against pulley using smaller of two supplied spacers between bracket and pulley. Slide wheel/brake assembly into swing arm. Place large spacer on right side and slide axle in. Do not tighten axle at this point . Photo #8 Slide caliper/tower assembly over disc and install 5/16″x 1″socket head cap screw in center hole to position assembly Photo #9 . Snug, but do not tighten bolt at this point.

See Figure 2. Install valve stem assembly (L) on wheel. Refer to TIRES in service manual. Do not re-use brake disc/rotor screws. Re-using these screws can result in torque loss and damage to brake components. (00319c) NOTES Install the primary bearing first using appropriate service manual and WHEEL BEARING REMOVER/INSTALLER. The side with the machined groove on the hub face is the primary bearing side for all kits except Kits 41681-07 and 40818-08. For Kit 41681-07: Install the wheel so that the hub markings are on the left side and the machined groove is on the right side of the motorcycle. • For 2006 and later FXDWG Models: When correctly installed, the tire will be 0.08-0.2 in (2-5 mm) off of center, compared to the fender. • For 2007 and later FX Softail and 2008 and later FXDWG Models: The left side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. • For 2006 and earlier FX Softail and 2007 and earlier FXDWG Models: The right side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. For Kit 40818-08: • Proper installation of this kit requires the separate purchase of two floating brake discs (44343-01 for 2004 – 2007 models and 44553-06A (stock) or 41500012 (polished) for 2008 and later models) and a tire (43371-07 on 2004-2008 models and 44026-09A on 2009-later models). The left side of the wheel has machined DOT markings to identify it as the primary bearing side. • For 2008 and later Touring: Install bearing shim (43903- 08) under the primary bearing. 3. Assemble wheel installation kit components and brake disc(s) to wheel, using the appropriate service parts table. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. 4. For FLSTC and FLSTN Models: Install wheel kit and right hand wheel spacer provided in installation kit. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. For FXSTD Models: Install wheel kit, stock wheel spacer and right side wheel spacer provided in installation kit in place of the tapered spacer discarded in Step 1. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. For FXSTS Models: Install wheel kit, stock wheel spacers and spacer provided in installation kit between the left side wheel spacer and the left fork. For all other models: Install previously removed wheel spacers. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. 5. Install front wheel (1), stock axle and stock axle nut. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING Chrome parts must be maintained regularly to verify that they keep their original shine and luster. 1. Clean heavily-soiled wheel surfaces using Harley-Davidson Wheel and Tire Cleaner, applied with Harley Wheel and Spoke Brush. 2. Thoroughly clean chrome with a good quality chrome cleaner, such as Harley Bright Chrome Cleaner. 3. After cleaning and polishing, seal the finish with a good quality sealer, such as Harley Glaze Polish and Sealant

For Kits 43934-07, 43942-07 and 43972-07: When installing wheel on 2008 and later Dyna models, install bearing shim from installation kit under the primary bearing. 3. Assemble wheel installation kit components, stock brake disc, and sprocket to wheel using the appropriate service parts table. Refer to REAR WHEEL in Service Manual. NOTES The valve stem side of the wheel and machined grooves in the hub face indicate the primary bearing side. Install the primary bearing first using appropriate service manual and WHEEL BEARING REMOVER/INSTALLER. 4. Install rear wheel (1), stock axle, and stock spacers to motorcycle. OPERATION 1. Remove cap from air suspension air valve and connect pump by threading the air valve adapter (1) on the pump as shown in Figure 1. When adapter is threaded properly, the current air pressure in the system will be indicated on the gauge of the pump. Do not exceed maximum air pressure for rear suspension. Air components fill rapidly. Therefore, use low air line pressure. Failure to do so may result in possible damage to components. (00165a) NOTES See the motorcycle’s Owner’s Manual or, if installed, the air suspension lowering kit’s instruction sheet for the recommended air pressures. Using pressures outside the recommended loading range will result in a reduction of available suspension travel and reduced rider comfort. 2. To increase pressure, operate the air pump handle (4) until the desired pressure is indicated on gauge (2). Use caution when bleeding air from the suspension. Moisture combined with lubricant may leak onto the rear wheel, tire and/or brake components and adversely affect traction, which could result in death or serious injury. (00084a) NOTE The pressure release button is designed to release pressure slowly. If the button is completely or rapidly depressed, no air will be released. For the best results, depress the pressure release button slowly and only partially. 3. To decrease pressure, slowly depress the pressure release button (3) on the pump until desired pressure is indicated on gauge (2)

Installation 1. Place the saddlebags on the vehicle so the straps are positioned over the top of the passenger seat. 2. Lace saddlebags together. 3. Adjust the leather straps so the saddlebags ride high and fit snugly and evenly against the side of the seat. Top of saddlebags may be replaced to achieve snug fit. NOTE On some models, the rear turn signal lights may interfere with mounting of saddlebags. To correct this, a new directional set-back kit is available under part number 90504-82. This kit allows the rear signal lights to be mounted in the rear positions on the fender support, on 1982 and later FXR and XL models. Contact your Harley- Davidson Dealer to obtain this kit. If rear turn signal lights interfere with saddlebags, see your Harley-Davidson Dealer for a turn signal set-back kit. Proper turn signal operation and visibility is a major concern for motorcyclists. Failure to have visible, operational rear turn signals may result in death or serious injury. 4. The front securing straps must be fastened to a point on the motorcycle which is forward of the saddlebags, such as the upper shock mount or fender brace. Be certain the straps so not interfere with any moving parts. Improper positioning or fastening of these saddlebags could cause them to interfere with the operation of the vehicle, possibly causing a hazardous condition. The fastening straps and the saddlebags must be clear of the rear wheel, drive chain or belt, sprocket and rear brake components. Location of the saddlebags should not interfere with the operation of the swingarm and rear shocks and the turn signals should remain clearly visible from the rear and side of the vehicle. Improperly positioned or fastened saddlebags could interfere with the operation of the motorcycle, which could result in death or serious injury. 5. The rear securing straps must be fastened to a point which is rearward of the saddlebags such as the rear turn signal light support. 6. Check that saddlebags are mounted with ample clearance between the bags and the brake caliper and disc so they do not contact each other, even when the swingarm deflects under full load. 7. Once both saddlebags are mounted correctly, check all securing straps to be certain they are not interfering with or exposed to any moving parts. Tuck the tails of the leather straps underneath the portion of the straps that connect the two saddlebags. NOTE On some motorcycles, it will be necessary to mount the saddlebags over the outside surface of the rear shock. This is acceptable if all CAUTIONS and WARNINGS are observed

Working on or near the exhaust system when the engine is hot could result in severe burns. (00311a) Installation of any accessory suspension components can affect cornering clearance. 1. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first. 2. Raise the rear end of the motorcycle so that the rear wheel is just off the ground. Support the motorcycle with suitable blocking under the frame. NOTE Retain the original fasteners for installation of new shocks. 3. Remove the saddlebags from the motorcycle. See the Touring model’s Owner’s Manual for saddlebag removal. 4. Fasten the air pump, part number 54630-03A to the rear air-suspension adjustment valve on the motorcycle. See the Touring model’s owner’s manual for valve location. Add 3-5 psi to clear the line but do NOT exceed 50 psi. 5. Using the pressure-relief valve located below the gauge on the pump, release the air pressure from the rear sus- pension. Remove the air hose fittings from the shock absorbers. Save the fittings for installation on the new shocks. NOTE Air-suspension shock absorbers are oil filled and must be kept upright at all times to prevent oil leakage. 8. Remove the lower mounting bolts and washers from the shock absorbers

1. Saddlemen saddlebags mount over the back of the seat or rear fender of most motorcycles. When properly installed there will be one saddlebag on each side of the motorcycle with the split yoke resting on the fender or the seat. Both saddlebags must be securely mounted and tied down in a manner that does not interfere with any part of the motorcycle’s operation. Be certain the saddlebags or their mountings do not contact brake components, turn signals, taillight, brake light, suspension, swingarm, or drivetrain. These Shock Cutaway saddlebags have been designed to fit over your bike’s shock absorbers (see Fig. A), which allow for larger bags on bikes otherwise limited by shock and turn signal location. 2. We highly recommend that your bike be equipped with Saddlemen’s S4 saddlebag supports (see Fig. B) or equivalent. Saddlemen also offers Quick Disconnect rigid-mounting hardware kits for most bikes, that allow easy on, easy off bag installation and eliminate the yoke. For more information, see your dealer or contact Saddlemen at 310- 638-1222. 3. Your saddlebags must be at least two inches away from any exhaust pipe while the motorcycle is stationary or moving. You can adjust the split yoke to change the height of the bag on the motorcycle by adjusting the position of the hook and loop fastening system (Fig. C). Adjust the split yoke shorter to raise the height of the saddlebags, and longer to lower the height of the saddlebags. The split yoke can also be reversed by unbolting each yoke half from each saddlebag, and reversing the yoke’s position on your bike. This allows for the offset in the yoke to be positioned either forward or backwards providing clearance for the motorcycle’s components (Fig. D). 4. In addition to the hook and loop fastener, the bags rely on a nylon safety strap system to ensure proper and secure installation. This strap must be used, and tightened snugly. Assure that the strap’s short end with D-rings is pushed through the slot in the split yoke and resting on the topside it. Once the split yoke is set to the proper position, run the long safety strap over the top of the split yoke and secure it to the D-rings (see Fig E and F), and tighten it. 5. Once you’ve placed the saddlebags on your bike and have them adjusted properly, use the straps located on the bottom of each saddlebag (see Fig. E and G) to connect the saddlebag to the saddlebag support (if you are using Saddlemen’s S4 Saddlebag bracket refer to the instructions shipped with it). These lower straps adjust in length to assure a tight fit. Wrap them around the saddlebag support, snap the buckle halves together, and adjust the length of the strap assuring the strap is tight and supporting some of the saddlebags’ weight. Repeat this step on the other saddlebag.

For Kits 43573-08, 43575-08, 43703-08, 43978-07, 43771-07, 43609-07, 40943-09, 40966-09 and 40996-09: • The left side of the wheel has a machined groove (item 5, Figure 2) in the hub face and/or DOT markings to identify it as the brake disc and primary bearing side. • Install the wheel so that the valve stem is on the right side of the motorcycle. For Kits 44323-07, 44322-07 and 44282-07: • Install the wheel so that the hub markings are on the left side of the motorcycle. The left side of the wheel has a machined groove (item 5, Figure 2) in the hub face and hub markings to identify it as the primary bearing side. • These kits include one or two hub plates (43985-00) to install between the brake disc and the wheel and a chrome hub cap (43986-00) to install on the wheel opposite the brake disc side. Hub covers must be installed to prevent water intrusion, which could cause an imbalance condition. Dual brake disc models: Install one stainless steel hub plate (3) between each brake disc and wheel hub. Discard chrome hub cap (2). Install brake discs according to service manual procedures. Single brake disc models: Install one stainless steel hub plate (3) between the brake disc and wheel hub. Install the brake disc according to service manual procedures. Install the chrome hub cap (2) on the side opposite the brake disc. Discard extra stainless steel hub plate (3). • The gross axle weight ratings is unaffected by the installation of this wheel on a vehicle equipped with a 21-inch wheel. For Kits 43975-07, 43773-07, and 43602-07: • The wheel has a machined groove (item 5, Figure 2) in the hub face to identify the right side. • For 2007 and later FX Softail Models and 2008 and later FXDWG: The left side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. For all other models the right side of the wheel is the primary bearing side. • For Kit 43602-07: An arrow is engraved into the right side hub to indicate the direction of rotation. • For Kits 43975-07 and 43773-07: An arrow is cast between the spokes on the right side to indicate the direction of rotation. • These kits include one or two hub plates (43985-00) to install between the brake disc and the wheel and a chrome hub cap (43986-00) to install on the wheel opposite the brake-disc side. Hub covers must be installed to prevent water intrusion, which could cause an imbalance condition. Dual brake disc models: Install one stainless steel hub plate (3) between each brake disc and wheel hub. Discard chrome hub cap (2). Install brake discs according to service manual procedures. Single brake disc models: Install one stainless steel hub plate (3) between the brake disc and wheel hub. Install the brake disc according to service manual procedures. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in Service Manual. 5. For FLSTC and FLSTN Models: Install wheel kit and right side wheel spacer provided in installation kit. For FXSTD Models: Install wheel kit, stock left wheel spacer and right side wheel spacer from installation kit in place of the tapered right side wheel spacer discarded in Step 1. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual. For FXSTS Models: Install the left side wheel spacer provided in the kit between the stock left wheel spacer and the left fork. All other models: Install wheel spacers previously removed. 6. Install front wheel (1), stock axle and stock axle nut. Refer to FRONT WHEEL in service manual
