Tachometer Installation Instructions for 2004+ Harley Davidson Sportster Custom Look for other model instructions online at www.speedwayinstruments.com Introduction: Installation of the Speedway Instruments microTach+ TM tachometer Tachometer requires some basic mechanical skills, including removing decorative covers, cutting protective tubing around wires, and using suitcase splice connectors to splice existing wiring harness. These actions may void your warranty, and if done incorrectly may cause damage to your motorcycle. Only you know your capabilities, if you do not feel capable of making modification please have a qualified motorcycle technician install it. Speedway Instruments, LLC is not responsible for damage to your motorcycle due to improper installation. These instructions utilize a 2004 Harley Davidson XL1200C motorcycle as basis for the all descriptions and pictures. Variations in location, color and procedure may be required for different year and make. Please refer to the Service manual to confirm the proper color and location of wires. Please make sure you have the proper service manual and tools before starting the installation. 1. Turn ignition off and disconnect Battery. 2. Determine a mounting position. Installation NOTE When performing the following step, note the location and orientation of the spring washer when removing each footrest. 1. See Figure 1. On the right side of the motorcycle, remove the fastener securing the footrest to the footrest bracket. Save the hardware for installation. NOTE On motorcycles equipped with Airfoil Foot Rests, remove the adjusting screw fastening the foot rest to its footrest mount. Save the foot rest and screw for heelrest installation. 2. Fasten the Airfoil Rider Heel Rest mount and spring washer to the footrest bracket using the hardware saved from step 1. Tighten the fastener to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm). 3. See Figure 2 and the Service Parts illustration. Place the right-side Airfoil Rider Heel Rest (2) on the Airfoil Rider Heel Rest mount (3), positioning the heelrest at the desired angle

(00333a) NOTE If your motorcycle has directional lights mounted on the upper fork bracket they must be relocated to the bottom fork bracket. Some models have front directional lights equipped with three wires, the third black wire is a ground wire. Check to determine how many wires are connected to the front directional lights and follow the following procedure that applies. Ifdirectional lights are not mounted on the upper fork bracket proceed to “ASSEMBLING FAIRING”. Relocating Two Wire Directional Lights 1. Support motorcycle on a center stand such that front wheel is raised slightly off the ground. 2. Remove fork tube pinch screw from right side of lower bracket. 3. Cut wires connected to right directional light about 2 in. away from directional light body. 4. Remove fork tube pinch screw from right side of upper fork bracket. (This is the screw that secures the right directional light.) 5. Install right directional light on right side of lower fork bracket using pinch screw removed in step 4. Install pinch screw removed in step 2 into right side of upper bracket. Tighten both pinch screws to 30-35 ft-lbs. 6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 to relocate left directional light. NOTE Fork tubes may slide downward within fork brackets. If this occurs, front fork tube extension above front fork upper bracket will have to be readjusted according to appropriate Service Manual procedures. 7. Connect the right directional light as follows: Strip approx. 5/16 in. of insulation from the wires cut in step 3. 8. Crimp solderless connectors from kit on two wires coming from motorcycle. 9. Split one end of the 2-conductor polarized wire from kit back about 2 in. and strip 5/16 in. of insulation from wire ends. 10. Slide a piece of shrink tubing from kit over each of the wire ends stripped in step 9 and crimp the wires into the terminals installed in step 8. Make sure you connect the silver and copper colored wires to like colored wires. NOTE Polarized wire is used in this application to ensure correct wiring. One wire is silver, one is copper colored. Wire colors of spliced wire must match wire color of original directional wire leads. 11. Cut polarized wires to the length required for connection to the wires at the relocated directional light. Make certain you leave enough slack in wires to allow routing the harness along the fork tube. 12. Split remaining end of the 2-conductor polarized wire from kit back about 2 in. and strip 5/16 in. of insulation from wire ends. 13. Slide heat shrink tubes over the two wire end. 14. Strip 5/16 in. of insulation from wires connected to directional light and connect like colored wires at directional light with connectors from kit. 15. Slide heat shrink tubing over connectors installed in steps 10 and 14. Activate shrink tubing with heat gun or hair dryer.

SECURITY SYSTEM SMART SIREN AND SMART SIREN II BATTERY REPLACEMENT KIT SIREN BOX REMOVAL Read the following instructions and make sure you fully understand them prior to replacing the battery. If the procedure is not within your capabilities, or you do not have the correct tool, have a Harley-Davidson dealer replace the battery. Improper installation could result in damage to this product. (00419b) 1. Refer to the Owner’s Manual and follow the instructions given to disarm the security system. 2. Remove the siren box from the vehicle. Reference the siren installation procedures found in the Siren Kit Instruction Sheet or contact a Harley-Davidson dealer for specific information on locating and removing the siren box from your model. Battery replacement, Smart Siren 1. See Figure 1. Remove the battery cover (2) from the siren box as follows: a. Place the siren on a sturdy, flat surface with the potting (1) and battery cover facing up. b. Using a blunt, stiff blade such as a table knife, insert the blade between the case and cover at a 45 degree angle to the side of the case. Insert the blade until it touches the snaps on the inside face of the cover. Figure 2 shows the four barbed snaps (2). c. Twist the blade slowly so the inserted edge presses against the inside face of the cover. The cover will pop off and can be replaced later using silicone adhesive if necessary

Install rear lifter cover bracket (1) assembly using screws (2) removed in step 1. Torque screws to 90- 120 in-lbs (10.0 – 13.5 Nm). 3. Remove the two screws most forward on the front lifter cover. 4. See Figure 2. Install front lifter cover bracket (1) assembly using screws (2) removed in step 3. Remove all residual threadlocking agent from fastener holes using an appropriate thread chasing device and compressed air.

A Service Manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer. 1. See Figure 1. Remove the fork stem cap (1). Bend the lockwasher (2) tab away from the steering stem nut (3) and remove the fork stem nut and lockwasher. Discard the lockwasher. NOTE Always tighten the steering stem nut (3) to 70 – 80 ft-lbs (95 – 109 Nm) before measuring fall away. Lubricate threads of nut with a small amount of clean engine oil. Avoid applying oil to the mating surfaces of the steering stem nut (3) and the new hardened washer from the kit. 2. Install the new hardened washer from the kit (2) and steering stem nut (3). Tighten steering stem nut (3) to 70 – 80 ft-lbs (95 – 109 Nm). 3. Check fall away following the instructions in STEERING HEAD BEARINGS BEARING ADJUSTMENT (FALLAWAY) in an appropriate Service Manual, however, tighten the steering stem nut (3) to 70 – 80 ft-lbs . Adjust adjusting nut (5), if necessary per instructions. 4. Install fork stem cap (1).
