INSTALLATION 1. Dyna Models: Remove the plastic clip that fastens the clutch cable to the frame downtube just below the clutch cable adjuster and boot. Leave the clip above the adjuster in place. Softail Models: Remove the plastic clip and screw that attaches the clutch cable to the frame downtube just above the clutch cable adjuster and boot. 2. ALL Models: See Figure 1. Cut the original rubber boot (B) from the clutch cable (A). Make sure that the clutch cable covering is not cut or damaged. 3. Obtain the two halves of the clutch cable adjuster cover (items 1 and 2) and two cushions (8). Peel the paper backing from one cushion (8), and center the cushion on the inside of one cover half. Repeat for the other cushion and cover half. 4. Obtain the two screws (7) from the kit. Position the cover halves on each side of the cable adjuster, and align the screw holes at each end. Place a drop of Loctite 243 – Blue on the screw threads, and fasten the cover halves with the two screws. Tighten to 21 in-lbs (2.4 Nm)

REMOVAL Prepare for Service Touring Models: Remove left side saddlebag, left side cover, and maxi-fuse. Refer to SADDLEBAG and MAXI-FUSE in Service Manual. Softail and Dyna Models: To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. This kit does not fit models equipped with Hydraulic Clutch Kits, handlebar mounted gauges or the Road Tech® Radio or FLHRS models equipped with an accessory windshield. REMOVAL Preparation – All Models To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b) To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. (00307a) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. See the service manual and remove the seat and disconnect battery cables or remove the main fuse. Save the seat hardware for installation. -J04406 When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allo w open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a) 2. Softail and Dyna models: See the service manual and loosen the fuel tank. Direct contact of D.O.T. 5 brake fluid with eyes can cause eye irritation, swelling, and redness. Avoid eye contact. In case of eye contact flush with large amounts of water and get medical attention. Swallowing large amounts of D.O.T. 5 brake fluid can cause digestive discomfort. If swallowed, obtain medical attention. Use in well ventilated area. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. (00144a) Direct contact of D.O.T. 4 brake fluid with eyes can cause irritation. Avoid eye contact. In case of eye contact flush with large amounts of water and get medical attention. Swallowing large amounts of D.O.T. 4 brake fluid can cause digestive discomfort. If swallowed, obtain medical attention. Use in well ventilated area. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. (00240a) D.O.T. 4 brake fluid will damage painted and body panel surfaces it comes in contact with. Always use caution and protect surfaces from spills whenever brake work is performed. Failure to comply can result in cosmetic damage. (00239b) NOTES Immediately wipe up any brake fluid spills with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Follow up by thoroughly wiping affected area with a clean, damp, soft cloth (small spills) or washing with a large quantity of soapy water (large spills). Cover nearby motorcycle surfaces with a polyethylene protective sheet to help protect against damage to finish caused by spilled DOT 4 brake fluid. 3. See the service manual and drain the brake fluid from the front brake reservoir and brake lines. Handlebar Removal – Dyna and Softail NOTE Cover the front fender and the fuel tank with clean shop towels to prevent scratching. Damage to the finish could result. 1. Note the front brake line routing and the orientation of the banjo fittings. See the service manual and disconnect and remove the brake line. Save the banjo bolts, but discard the brake line gaskets. 2. Remove the plastic wiring retainer clips that secure the turn signal harnesses to the handlebar, if equipped. 3. Remove the front brake master cylinder and clutch lever assemblies from the handlebar.

INSTALLATION For 1991 through 1996 XL with Laced Wheels For 1993 through 1996 Softail with Laced Wheels For 1993 through 1997 Dyna with Laced Wheels 1. Remove the rear wheel. Refer to REAR WHEEL REMOVAL in the Service Manual. 2. Remove all stock sprocket mounting screws, washers and locknuts. 3. Place a new chrome washer onto the threads of each new chrome screw from the kit. Install the sprocket onto the wheel. 4. See Figure 1. Obtain new original equipment locknuts and install on the screws. See Figure 2. Tighten all screws in the sequence shown to 45-55 ft-lbs (61-75 Nm). 5. Install the rear wheel. See REAR WHEEL INSTALLATION in the service manual. Verify the correct axle alignment and check belt deflection per service manual instructions INSTALLATION For 1997 and Later XL with Laced Wheels For 1997 through 1999 Softail with Laced Wheels For 1998 through 1999 Dyna with Laced Wheels For ALL Models with Cast Wheels 1. Remove the rear wheel. Refer to REAR WHEEL REMOVAL in the Service Manual. 2. Remove all stock sprocket mounting screws and washers. 3. Place a new chrome washer onto the threads of each new chrome screw from the kit. Apply 2-3 drops of Loctite 262 (red) to the screw threads, and install the sprocket onto the wheel. Tighten all sprocket screws finger-tight. 4. See Figure 3. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 23 ft-lbs (31.2 Nm). NOTE If 23 ft-lbs (31.2 Nm) is reached before screw is fully seated, remove screw and examine screw and wheel for thread damage. Replace screw or wheel if threads are damaged. 5. After all screws have been tightened to 23 ft-lbs (31.2 Nm), mark a straight line, with a grease pencil, on all sprocket screw heads continuing the line over onto the sprocket. 1 4 2 5 3 30 is04009 Figure 3. Tightening Sequence (Later Laced Wheels and All Cast Wheels) 6. Mark a second line at 30° clockwise from the lines on the sprocket at each screw. NOTE For best results, use Snap-on Torque Angle Gauge TA360 or equivalent. 7. Using the marks as a guide, and using the tightening sequence shown in Figure 3+, turn each screw an additional 1/12 turn or 30° clockwise. 8. Install the rear wheel. Kit 46098-98 fits the following models with single-disc front brake. •1996 through 2003 XL (Sportster®) models •1996 and later Dyna models •1996 and later Softail® models Kit 46099-98 fits the following models with dual-disc front brake. •1996 through 2003 XL (Sportster) models •1996 and later Dyna models •1996 and later Softail models •1996 and later FL Touring models INSTALLATION Wear safety glasses or goggles when removing or installing retaining rings. Retaining rings can slip from the pliers and could be propelled with enough force to cause serious eye injury. (00312a) NOTE Make sure you are using the correct retaining-ring pliers. Verify that tips of pliers are not excessively worn or damaged. 1. Adjust the clutch cable for maximum free play. With snap ring pliers, remove and retain the external snap ring from the bottom of the clutch lever pivot pin. Remove the pivot pin, clutch lever, clutch cable and rear-view mirror from the clutch bracket. NOTE Apply anti-seize (10) (Harley-Davidson part number 98960-97) from the kit to all screw threads prior to installation. 2. See Figure 1. Install the new chrome clutch bracket (1) using a clamp half (2), washers (3) and screws (4) from the kit. Tighten the screws to 70-80 in-lbs (7.9-9.0 Nm). -J01271 1 is01004 Figure 2. Clutch Cable Adjustment 3. Re-install the clutch cable and clutch lever, mirror and pivot pin and snap ring. See Figure 2. Re-adjust the clutch cable so there is a 1/16-1/8 inch (1.6-3.1 mm) gap between the clutch cable ferrule and the end of the clutch bracket (1). 4. Remove the original clamp half from the front brake master cylinder assembly. 5. See Figure 1. Install the new chrome clamp half (2) on the front brake master cylinder assembly using washers (3) and screws (4) from the kit. Tighten the screws to 70-80 in-lbs (7.9-9.0 Nm). 6. Remove the two screws retaining the brake master cylinder reservoir cover. See Figure 3. Replace with the two standoff studs (1) in the kit. Tighten to 6-8 in-lbs (0.7-0.9 Nm)

Backrest Pad and Bracket -J03063 1 of 5 Remove the Backrest Pad NOTE Medallions are attached to a medallion plate between the uprights of the sissy bar using either adhesive or push nuts. 1. See Figure 1. Remove and retain any existing medallion. Adhesive Mounted Medallion (1): Carefully pry the medallion (1) from the plate. Remove any adhesive residue from the back of the medallion and the sissy bar medallion plate. To avoid contaminating the adhesive backing, place the medallion in an area away from dirt and debris. Push Nut Mounted Medallion (2): Carefully pry the edge of the medallion until the medallion is free of the push nuts. 2. See Figure 2. Remove and retain the screw (1) that secures the backrest pad to the plate. 3. Remove and retain the two screws (2), backrest bracket (3) and backrest pad (4). Install the Light Assembly 1. See Figure 3. Clean the front of the medallion plate (2) with a 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water. 2. Peel the adhese bracket kit (Part Number 59545-04) and sandwich the light assembly between the bracket frame and the medallion plate. The bracket clamps will fit around the back of the sissyive backing from the adhesive tape located on the light assembly (1). Fit and hold the light assembly to the front of the medallion plate (2). 3. See Figure 6. For 2.55 inch (64.8 mm) center to center mounting hole backrest pads, use th bar arms.

Installation When performing the following procedures, be careful not to scratch painted surfaces (fender, tank, etc.) with metal tabs on seat. 1. Remove existing seat from motorcycle. Keep lockwasher and screw. 2. Remove existing grab strap and all attaching hardware. 3. Install new grab strap onto motorcycle at same location old grab strap was removed (re-use existing hardware). 4. On all models, except FXDWG , install existing stock rear bracket onto seat using stock hardware. On FXDWG models, install the new rear bracket, 52152- 97 onto the seat using the stock hardware. 5. Position new seat on motorcycle. Be sure bracket on front of seat fully engages seat mounting tab on frame. NOTE On rear fenders of 1997 -2003 models, a captive nut secured with a plastic retention washer has replaced the previously used weld nut. Do not remove the plastic retention washer unless the captive nut is damaged and must be replaced. The plastic retention washer also prevents seat bracket from contacting paint on fender. Therefore, no nylon washer is required between bracket and fender on 1997 – 2003 models. 1996 DYNA MODELS ONLY Secure seat with stock screw, stock lockwasher and place stock nylon washer between seat bracket and fender. 1997 – 2003 DYNA MODELS Secure seat with stock screw and stock lockwasher.

Kit Contents Table 1. Kit Contents Part Number Description (Quantity) Not sold separately Chrome Inner Primary Housing 786A Sealing fastener (5) INSTALLATION NOTES Whenever the sealing fasteners are loosened or removed, they must be replaced. Always replace using Harley-Davidson® Original Equipment sealing fasteners part 786A. Do not use part 786. The primary housing included in this kit installs in the same manner as the stock inner primary housing with the following exception: Use the five sealing fasteners included with this kit. Install and tighten fasteners to the torque specified below. For 2006 Dyna model motorcycles: Remove dowel pins from the chrome inner primary housing before attempting installation. Using a pair of pliers or vice grips, remove the dowel pins by carefully twisting and pulling on the pins. Be careful not to scratch or mar the chrome or sealing surfaces of the chrome inner primary housing. Remove the chain tensioner anchor plate, bolt and screws from the stock inner primary housing after it has been removed, then install it on the chrome inner primary housing. See the appropriate Service Manual for the proper tightening procedure, and torque specifications. 1. See the Drive section of the appropriate Service Manual, and remove the stock inner primary housing. Clean the internal threads in the crankcase and transmission case where the sealing fasteners were removed using a wire brush. Install the chrome inner primary housing as indicated below. Replace the five stock sealing fasteners with the five bolts included in this kit. Put a light coat of primary oil under the head of the sealing fasteners and then tighten to 23-25 ft- lbs (31-34 Nm)
