1995 Models To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative cable first) before proceeding. (00049a) 1.1995 MODELS, REMOVAL OF ELECTRONIC SPEEDOMETER AND BRACKET 1a. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and remove seat. 1b. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and remove fuel tank. Stop the engine when refueling or servicing the fuel system. Do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks near gasoline. The 3-place speedometer sensor connector [65] is located on the frame beneath the seat. Remove connector from t-stud and disconnect. Cut cable tie holding sensor wires to right rear frame tube. 1d. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and remove headlamp, for work clearance. 1e Remove handlebar clamp screws securing speedometer bracket. Remove speedometer, bracket, and harness. 2.1995 MODELS, DISCONNECT MAIN WIRING HARNESS 8-PLACE CONNECTOR [21B, A] (FIGURE 2) 2a. Disconnect the battery, negative cable first. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and disconnect main wiring harness 8-place connector [21A, B], at the front of the motorcycle. 3.1995 MODELS, REMOVE SPEEDOMETER LEADS FROM 8-PLACE CONNECTOR [21B, A] (FIGURE 2) 3a. See Figure 2 and Service Manual wiring schematic. Pull the following wires and terminals out of connector [21B]. Wire Color Cavity Number Orange/white 5 White/green 1 Black 2 3b. Remove the large female connector from the fuel gauge black wire. 3c. Remove the screws that secure the indicator lamps assembly to the speedometer bracket. Retain screws and indicator lamps assembly for installation on speedometer/tachometer bracket later. 5.1995 MODELS, REMOVE SPEEDOMETER FROM BRACKET 5a. Unscrew boot from speedometer reset switch. Remove cover screws and rear cover. 5b. See Figure 3. Note position of rear speedometer gasket and remove it. Push on rear of speedometer while simultaneously pulling speedometer and front gasket from bracket. Do not remove front gasket from the speedometer. 6.1995 MODELS, INSTALL SPEEDOMETER IN KIT BRACKET 6a. See Figure 5. Place wires from speedometer through front of left opening in double bracket. Lubricate the front and rear gaskets with isopropyl alcohol or glass cleaner to ease installation. 6b. Insert speedometer into the front of the double bracket. Be sure wire guides are aligned with opening at bottom of bracket. 6c. Place rear gasket in position and align gasket tabs. Work gasket into space between speedometer and bracket by pushing speedometer against one side of bracket while pushing gasket into position at the opposite side. 6d. Add amber bulb assembly from kit to speedometer in order for tachometer and speedometer backlighting to match. 6e. Replace cover and boot from reset switch.

REMOVAL When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a) 1. Purge the high-pressure fuel line and disconnect the fuel line following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b) 2. Remove the main fuse following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. 3. Remove the seat following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. Save all seat mounting hardware. NOTE When moving the fuel tank back, do not damage the fuel gauge wires clipped to the frame under the left side of the fuel tank. 4. Remove the front and rear fuel tank mounting hardware following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. Move the fuel tank back on the frame to gain access to the tabs on the steering head harness shield. 5. See Figure 1. Disengage the tabs (2) from the holes (3) on each side of the frame and remove the shield (1). 6. Pull the wire harness down from inside the frame enough to disconnect the white (left) [31L] and black (right) [31R] 3-place turn signal connectors. Set aside the frame-side connector halves. 7. Remove the socket terminals from the lamp-side connector halves following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. Make note of the wire colors installed in the cavities of each connector, which should be: Left side (white connector): a. Black [BK] wire in cavity 1 b. Violet [V] wire in cavity 2 c. 1. Remove stock gas cap from fuel tank. 2. Clean and wipe inside surface of fuel tank filler cup, O-ring seal surface, and trim ring adhesive surface with a mixture of equal parts of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. 3. See Figure 1. Install gas cap into fuel tank. is00407 Figure 1. Screw in Gas Cap is00466 Figure 2. Note Position of Arrow on Trim Ring 4. Push down on gas cap and rotate clockwise one-eighth of a turn to lock. To unlock, push down on gas cap and rotate counterclockwise one-eighth of a turn. 5. See Figure 2. Before removing adhesive backing, note position of arrow on inside diameter of chrome trim ring. NOTE As you rotate trim ring, you will see gaps between trim ring and fuel tank. Rotate trim ring to position that best eliminates gaps between fuel tank and trim ring. Rotation of trim ring should be minimal. 6. See Figure 3. With the arrow pointing toward front of motorcycle, rotate chrome trim ring slightly to determine best position of bottom chrome trim ring to contour of the fuel tank 7. See Figure 4. Mark position of chrome trim ring with masking tape or grease pencil. 8. Carefully cut masking tape with a hobby knife making sure not to scratch chrome trim ring or paint surface on fuel tank. 9. Peel off adhesive backing from chrome trim ring. 10. Using gas cap to center and masking tape (or grease pencil mark) to align, press chrome trim ring firmly into position for about ten seconds. 11. Removing the Analog Fuel Gauge NOTE The fuel gauge wires are routed through a tube in the fuel tank, and are secured by a clip at the bottom of the tank and, on some models, a clamp on the frame. Open the clip and clamp as needed, and be sure there is enough slack in the wires to be able to lift out the gauge. 1. At the bottom left side of the fuel tank, bend back the flexible clip slightly to free the fuel gauge conduit. Open the harness clamp on the frame if necessary to free the conduit. Gently pull on the conduit to draw the Multilock connector [117] out of the tunnel. 2. See Figure 2. Depress the pin on the socket terminal side of the connector, and pull apart the pin and socket halves. 3. See Appendix B in an appropriate Service Manual. Use a pick (Snap-On TT600-3 or equivalent) to remove the terminals or clip off the wires. Remove and discard the fuel gauge. 4. For Carbureted Models: See Figure 2. Remove the fuel gauge by firmly grasping and carefully pulling up (do NOT twist) on the gauge just far enough to free it from the fuel tank. Disconnect the two sending unit connectors. Feed the conduit and two wires up through the tube while removing the gauge. Remove and discard the fuel gauge. For Fuel-Injected Models: See Figure 2. Remove the fuel gauge by firmly grasping and carefully pulling up (do NOT twist) on the gauge to free it from the fuel tank. Feed the conduit and three wires up through the tube while removing the gauge. Remove and discard the fuel gauge. 5. Remove and discard the rubber gasket. INSTALLATION For Kit Numbers 75084-04B or 75237-03B 1. See Figure 2. Assemble the new gasket (3) to the LED fuel gauge (1) from the kit. Install the gasket so the flat side contacts the edge of the gauge. 2. See Figure 1. Use three of the Phillips-head screws and washers from the kit to connect the wires as follows: Fasten the Orange wire (1) ring terminal to the gauge connection marked “12V and “O” with a screw and washer. Fasten the Black wire (2) ring terminal to the connection marked “GND” and “BK” with a screw and washer. Fasten the Yellow/White wire (3) ring terminal to the connection marked “Y/W” with a screw and washer. 3. See Figure 2. While carefully lowering the fuel gauge, feed the wire harness (2) down into the drain tube until the three short (Orange, Black, Yellow/White) wires exit the hole at the bottom of the fuel tank. Gently pull the wires to remove slack while installing the gauge to the fuel tank. Do not twist the gauge during installation. Hold the gauge firmly and press down until it snaps into place

Fuel Gauge Fuel Gauge indicates the remaining fuel in the fuel tank (the gauge does not work when main switch is in the “OFF” position). The gauge moves from “F”(full) to “E” (empty) as fuel decreases in the fuel tank. Fill the tank with 90 Octane or higher gasoline when the needle is approaching the “E” position. There is no reserve tank. Indicating Lamp of High beam It indicates high beam is in use. Note: apply low beam to avoid obstructing the view of oncoming drivers and drivers ahead. 1. Speedometer 2. The key can not be removed in this position. “OFF” Position: All electrical circuits are switched off. The engine stops. The key can be removed in this position. “LOCK” Position: The steering is locked when in this position. The key can be removed. Steering Lock Turn the handle bar fully to the left to lock the steering to prevent theft. Push the key in when it is in “OFF” position and while pushing the key in, turn the switch to “LOCK” position to lock the steering. Pull the key out once you are done

Oil Temperature and Gauge 2.1. Introduction My 1998 BMW R1100RT came with an LCD temperature gauge that shows horizontal black bars in a vertical motif, to indicate temperature. This is difficult to interpret at speed (how many bars are exposed?) and does not actually tell me what the oil temperature is. 2.2. Normal Operation The bike seems to run at 5 or six bars under normal conditions. It appears that the oil thermostat for the cooler is set to ’5 bars’. 2.3. Over Heating The LCD panel indicates that 8 bars is the maximum normal operating temperature. It would be useful to know what the actual temperature is. Modern oils have a normal operating temperature of approximately 110 degrees Celsius and will not show any serious degradationii at this temperature. The maximum sustained operating temperature (at the bearing surface) is approximately 130 degrees Celsius for any oil formulated in the past 5 years and some high performance synthetics will not appreciably degrade even at this temperature. However, the degradation curve is a polynomial and degradation will increase rapidly with increasing temperature. According to the oil’s formulation (pure synthetics will show the least increase with temperature), by approximately 160 degrees Celsius (or about 300 degrees Fahrenheit), oil degradation can be up to 10 times faster then at 110 Deg. C. 2.4. Scale To fix the ‘number of bars’ problem, I determined that an overlay with numbers would be the best idea. 2.4.1. Addendum The number scale became too much to maintain. Rather than this, I cut a mm or so wide stripe out of the self sticking stripping meant for the side of a car. Using a red material, I put it through the middle of the fifth bar of both the temperature and fuel display. The stripe is slightly smaller than the thickness of the bar. This allows me to tell when I am at normal operating temperature and when approximately half a tank is used

You will now proceed to drill the hole using a 1″ Hole saw similar to the one shown. Fig 2 As you drill the hole you will periodically check to see how deep you’ve gone, the goal is to cut as close as possible but not go all the way through. It helps to blow away the loose bits of material before you pull the saw back to check. Fig 3 You will want to carefully remove all loose bits of plastic from the cut channel. Once finished it should look like this before proceeding. Fig 4 Now insert a T handle wrench into the hole to keep the plug from falling in as shown, a screwdriver will work as well. Use a box cutter to finish the cut and pop the plug out using the T handle.
Black Rhino Performance Page 3 of 4 Fig 5 Once you have made the cut all around the plug will pop out. Now is a good time to check and make sure that you didn’t drop a bunch of cuttings in the tank. If you were careful there shouldn’t be anything in there. Fig 6 Now that that is finished it is time to install the sender. First you will want to coat both sides of the cork gasket with a petroleum resistant gasket sealant. The pattern of the holes is not symmetrical so make sure the holes on the sender line up with the gasket. Fig 7 Finish the installation by hand tightening the screws and just tight enough without forcing the gasket out from under the sender. Let the cork do its work, over tightening can cause leaks. Fig 8 When finished, it’s a good idea to silicone the contacts of the sender. This helps to prevent shorting or damaging the sender or gauge.
