COMPRESSOR INSTALLATION TOUR MODELS 1992 -2000 On the Dressers and Tour bikes, remove the seat. If the battery is located underneath the seat, then remove the right saddlebag and right hand side cover. Using a zip tie, mount the compressor to the main wiring harness at the front of the covered area with the compressor air outlet facing down. If the battery is not under the seat and is located beside the right saddlebag, the compressor will be mounted underneath the seat, utilizing a bolt to the frame The air hose routes from the air horns, behind the fuel valve, over the rear cylinder and to the right side cover or underneath the seat. Do not cut hose until you connect it to the compressor. TOUR MODELS 2001 & NEWER On the Dressers and Tour bikes, the compressor will mount under the seat, in the square hole in front of the frame, just in front of the battery. The air output will face left toward the air horns. The hose routes thru a hole at the bottom of the square hole, then to the air horns. WIRING Connect both black wires from the relay to the original horn wires. It does not matter which wire you connect. The fuse wire on the relay will connect to the positive terminal on the battery. Observe negative and positive terminals on compressor. Ground the negative terminal to the battery. The positive terminal connects to red wire on relay. Refer to wiring schematic on the next page

FUEL Fuel tank capacity: 2.0 US gal (7.4 liter, 1.6 lmp gal) To open the fuel fill cap, pull the breather tube out of thesteering stem nut. Then turn the fuel fill cap ounterclockwise. • Use automobile gasoline with a pump octane number of 92 or higher. If “knocking” or “pinging” oc- curs, try a different brand of gasoline or a higher octane grade. • Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions. Perform this operation in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped. Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area where gasoline is drained or stored and where the fuel tank is refueled. 1.OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS WARNING BASIC OPERATION Starting The Engine • Never run the engine in an enclosed area. The exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas thatcan cause loss of consciousness and lead to death. • Attempting to start the engine with the transmis- sion in gear and clutch engaged may result in in- jury or damage. NOTE: • This motorcycle can be kickstarted with the transmission in gear by disengaging the clutch before operating the kickstarter. Check the engine oil, transmission oil and coolant levels before starting the engine (page 21, 23, 24). Cold Engine Starting: 1. Turn the fuel valve ON. 2. Shift the transmission into neutral. 3. If the temperature is 35°C (95°F) or below, pull the choke knob fully out. 4. If the temperature is below 0°C (32°F), open the throttle two or three times. (The engine requires a richer mixture for starting in cold weather. When the throttle is so opened, the accelerator pump will feed extra fuel to the cylinder, thereby facilitating starting in cold weather.) 5. With the throttle closed, operate the kickstarter starting from the top of the kickstarter stroke, kick through to the bottom with a rapid, continuous motion. (Do not open the throttle, As the carburetor is equipped with an accelerator pump, excessive fuel will be charged into the engine, and the spark plug will be fouled if the throttle is opened and closed repeatedly. Excessive fuel in the engine makes kick starting difficult.) 6. About a minute after the engine starts, push the choke knob back all the way to fully OFF. If idling is unstable, open the throttle slightly. (1) FUEL FILL CAP (2) BREATHER TUBE WARNING (1) FUEL VALVE (2) CHOKE KNOB Warm Engine Starting: 1. Turn the fuel valve ON. 2. Shift the transmission into neutral. 3. Pull the hot start lever and kick-start the engine. (Do not open the throttle.) 4. As soon as the engine starts, release the hot start lever.

Before you begin the repair procedure, check if the repair has been performed on the unit. NOTE: Units repaired in the warehouse may not be reflected on iN at the begin- ning of the campaign. For this reason, always check the VIN stamp prior to per- forming this repair. However, do not remove the fuel valve from the fuel tank. 2. Drain the fuel into an approved container. 3. Remove the four screws and diaphragm cover. NOTE: The diaphragm cover is under spring pressure. Do not lose the spring or screws. The countermeasure part has a paint mark near the air vent hole. 4. Replace the diaphragm, spring, cover, and screws with new parts included in the kit. Install the new diaphragm with the plastic retainer facing the diaphragm cover. NOTE: Make sure the air vent hole is facing downward towards the ground. 5. Reinstall the fuel tank using the procedures in the Service Manual. 6. Refill the fuel tank

INSTALLATION Preparation For EFI models: To prevent spray of fuel, purge system of high-pressure fuel before supply line is disconnected. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00275a) Follow the instructions found in the Service Manual to purge the fuel supply of high pressure gasoline and remove the fuel supply line. For ALL models, WITH Maxi-Fuse: To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove maxi-fuse before proceeding. (00251a) 1. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the Maxi-Fuse. For ALL models, WITHOUT Maxi-Fuse: To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a) 1. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the negative (black) battery cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. For ALL models: Follow the instructions in the Service Manual to remove the instrument console from the fuel tank. 4. See FUEL TANK: REMOVAL in the appropriate section (Carbureted or EFI Engine) of the Service Manual for instructions to remove the tank. 5. For all models EXCEPT FLHR or 1986 and later FL Softail models with Chrome Headlight Nacelle Kit (Part Number 67907-96): Follow the instructions in the Service Manual to remove the headlamp housing. For FLHR models, or Softail models WITH the Nacelle Kit: Follow the instructions in the Service Manual and the mini-tach bracket kit (purchased separately) to remove the handlebar shroud. Mini-Tach Bracket Installation 6. For all models except FLHR: Install the mini-tach bracket components per the instructions in that kit. For FLHR models: Follow the instructions in the Service Manual and the mini-tach bracket kit to install the handlebar shroud and bracket components. 7. See Figure 7. Select the rubber isolation gasket (1) from this kit.

REMOVAL To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. (00307a) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a) 1. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions to remove the seat and disconnect the battery cables, negative (-) cable first. Retain all seat mounting hardware. Gasoline can drain from the carburetor fuel line when disconnected from fuel valve fitting. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. Wipe up spilled fuel immediately and dispose of rags in a suitable manner. (00256a) NOTES Installing this kit requires removal and installation of the cam support plate. Refer to the service manual for instructions with the following exception pertaining to cam compartment compo- nents: The crank and primary cam sprocket flange bolts are specially hardened, and the flat washers are of a special diameter and have ground surfaces. The cr ank sprocket flange bolts and pr imary cam sproc ket flange bolts ARE NOT interchangeable. 2. Refer to the service manual to remove and discard the crank sprocket flange bolts and primary cam sprocket flange bolts and washers. 3. For 1999 models only: Refer to the service manual to remove and discard the currently installed cam drive sprocket. 4. Refer to the service manual to remove and disassemble the cams from the support plate and oil pump. Discard the support plate and oil pump. 5. For 1999 – 2000 Dyna, 2000 Softail, 1999 – 2000 Touring, and 2001 EFI Touring models only: Inspect the cams, chain, sprockets and chain tensioners for wear, and replace as needed. Refer to the service manual for inspection and replacement procedures. For 2001 – 2005 Dyna, 2001 – 2006 Softail, 2002 – 2006 Touring, and 2001 carbureted Touring models only: Inspect the cams and secondary cam chain for wear, and replace as needed. Refer to the service manual for inspection and replacement procedures. The primary cam chain, primary sprockets and both tensioners will be replaced by new components from the kit. For ALL models and years: Discard the guide, as it will not be used. INSTALLATION 1. ALL models: See Figure 1. Obtain the new Rear Cam Roller Bearing Kit (H-D Part Number 8983) from inside the Cam Service Kit (H-D Part Number 17045-99C, purchased separately), and install as indicated in Step 2. NOTE See Figure 2. If not enough of the splined shaft is exposed to install the sprocket, omit the spacer (4) and proceed to Step 2e. When the bearing inner race is started onto the machined area, remove the flange bolt (5), flat washer (6) and sprocket, then assemble using the spacer (4). Repeat Step 2e to fully install bearing inner race. To center thrust washer, be sure o-ring is installed in relief groove. Damage to bearing cage and engine can occur if thrust washer is not centered. (00473b) 2. See Figure 1. Install the O-ring (5), thrust washer (4) and bearing inner race (3) onto the rear camshaft as follows: a. See Figure 2. To properly locate the thrust washer (2), install the O-ring (3) in the grinding relief groove on the splined end of the rear camshaft between the machined area and the secondary cam sprocket.

Normal Engine Stop 1. Shift the transmission into neutral. 2. Turn the fuel valve OFF. 3. Lightly open the throttle (1) 2 – 3 times, and then close it. 4. Depress and hold the engine stop button (2) until the engine stops completely. Failure to close the fuel valve may cause the carburetor to overflow, result in hard starting. Emergency Engine Stop To stop the engine in an emergency, press the engine stop button. Basic Operating Instructions 15 Help assure your CRF’s future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you ride during the first operating day or 15 miles (25 km). During this period, avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration. Always follow the proper starting procedure described below. Your motorcycle can be kickstarted wirh the transmission in gear by pulling in the clutch lever before operating the kickstarter. Preparation Make sure that the transmission is in neutral. Turn the fuel valve ON. Fuel Valve Starting Procedure Always follow the proper starting procedure described as follow. 4. Warm up the engine; don’t operate the throttle. 5. About 15 seconds after the engine startes, push the choke knob back all the way to fully OFF. If idling is unstable, open the throttle slightly. Extended use of the choke may impair piston and cylinder wall lubrication and damage the engine. High Air Temperature 35°C (95°F) or above 1. Do not use the choke. 2. Keep the throttle fully closed. 3. Start the engine following step 3 under Normal Air Temperature. Low Air Temperature 10°C (50°) or below 1. Follow steps 1-4 under Normal Air Temperature. 2. Continue warming up the engine until it runs smoothly and responds to the throttle when the choke knob is pushed back all the way to fully OFF. Extended use of the choke may impair piston and cylinder wall lubrication and damage the engine. Hot Engine Starting 1. Pull the hot start lever (3) and start the engine following step 3 under Normal Air Temperature. 2. As soon as the engine starts, release the hot start lever. NOTICE NOTICE Basic Operating Instructions 15 (1) fuel valve The three-way fuel valve is used to control the flow of fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor. ON -Turning the fuel valve ON before attempting to start the engine allows fuel to flow from the fuel tank to the carburetor. OFF -Turning the fuel valve OFF after stopping the engine prevents the flow of fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor. RES -Turning the fuel valve to RES allows fuel to flow from the reserve fuel supply to the carburetor. (1) fuel valve (2) choke knob Check the engine oil, transmission oil and coolant levels before starting the engine (pages 44,47,48). To restart a warm engine, follow the procedure for ”High Air Temperature. ” Normal Air Temperature 10°C-35°C (50°F-95°F) 1. Pull the choke knob (2) up all the way to fully ON, if the engine is cold. 2. Keep the throttle fully closed. 3. Pull the clutch lever all the way in, and press the starter button with the throttle completely closed. Or operate the kickstarter to start the engine. Starting from the top of the stroke, kick through to the bottom with a rapid, continuous motion. Do not operate the throttle. Allowing the kickstarter to snap back freely against the pedal stop can damage the engine case.
