1 Remove the seat 2 Uplug the stock wiring harness from the ECM (Fig. A) 3 Remove the 4 nuts that hold the ECM to the bracket and remove the ECM. 4 Remove the bolt that holds the seat strap to the rear fender. 5 Remove the ECM bracket from the fender. Remove one nut at a time or the bracket will fall into the tire. Reinstall the nuts to support the inner fender bracket. Due to the limited amount of room on this bike the seat strap and ECM bracket can NOTbe re-used. 6 Connect the PCVharness in-line of the stock wiring harness and ECM (Fig. B). 7 Place the BLACK PCVto GREYstock connector as close to the fuse box as possible. This connection will NOT lay flat against the frame. 8 Using the supplied velcro secure the ECM to the rear fender. Place the ECM as far down as possible. The upper part of the ECM will just overlap the bolt hole for the seat strap. Make sure to clean both surfaces with the alcohol swab before attaching. If using the Autotune kit offset the ECM about 1″ from center to the right side of the bike. 9 Remove the security module from the top of the battery (Fig. C). This unit slides to the right of the bike.

open the top and side compartments. Locate the two ignition coils and ballast resistor directly in front of the air cleaner intake. On some models it is best to remove the air cleaner for access to the coil area. Unplug the wires from the ballast resistor. Connect the power resistor supplied with the kit across (parallel with] the ballast resistor, and reconnect the wires to the tabs provided. The resistor will become very hot during operation. That is normal, and not destructive to the resistor, however, care should be taken to keep cables and wires from coming in contact with it. Locate the blinker relay just behind the fuse box in the left compartment. The white/green wire going to the relay carries 12 volts from the ignition switch. Using the splice connector provided, attach the separate red wire included in the kit to the white/green wire, as shown below. Do not strip the wires. On 197B and 1979 models, the 12 volts can be obtained at the accessory terminal in the left side compartment. y^T^^TL. PUSH CLIP DOWN RED WIRE SUPPLIED WITH KIT SWITCHED 12 VOLTS Remove the points cover and battery cover. Remove the 10 mm bolt holding the spark advance assembly to the engine. Remove the screws holding the points plate to the engine. Disconnect the blue/yellow
and yellow point wires where they plug into the wire harness and remove the entire point/plate assembly. Notice that there are two other wires connected where the points plugged in. These are wires going to the condensers mounted in front of the battery. Unplug both wires and tuck them back out of the way. Do not reconnect. | > Remove the spark advance assembly from the engine. Remove the point cam from the advance assembly. Coat the advance assembly shaft with oil. Place the OYNA S rotor on the shaft and while spreading the weights, push the rotor down until it engages the weights. Ensure that the rotor rotates freely on the shaft as the advance weights move out and back. Install the advance/rotor assembly on the engine making sure the pin on the camshaft is engaged in the slot on the advance assembly. Install the washer and bolt, and tighten. Ensure that the rotor is still free to rotate.

If the 18P (light blue) connector is in abnormal condition as shown below, contact TechLine at (800) 421-1900, option 9. FRONT SUB-HARNESS REPLACEMENT 1. Remove the front sub-harness from the cowl stay hooks. Disconnect all the electrical components from the front sub-harness. 2. Temporarily set the main wire harness aside, and disconnect the 6P (natural) con- nector. Then, carefully remove the front sub-harness. 3. Install the new front sub-harness by con- necting the 14P (natural) and 18P (light blue) connectors. NOTE: For routing specifications, refer to the WIRING & HARNESS ROUTING SECTION on pages 7-8. 4. Attach the front sub-harness on the cowl stay hooks. Make sure the front sub-harness is routed elow the main sub-harness. Place the front sub-harness between the radiator and the frame, and below the rec- tifier. Be careful not to damage the front sub-harness or other components. 6. Re-connect the front sub-harness to the 6P (natural) connector. 7. Secure the main wire harness and the front sub-harness using the longer wire band. 8. Secure the main wire harness and the upper side of the front sub-harness using the shorter wire band. Adjust the wire har- ness located within the frame and the radi- ator hose accordingly. 9. Secure the main wire harness fuse box to the front sub-harness using the shorter wire band. Always keep the battery charged. Storing a discharged battery can cause permanent battery damage. ● To charge a sealed-type (MF) battery, a special (constant- voltage) battery charger is required. Using a conventional battery charger will damage the battery. If you do not have access to a sealed-type (MF) battery charger, have a Yamaha dealer charge your battery. EAU04076* Replacing the fuses The fuse box, which contains the fuses for the individual circuits, is located under panel D. The fuel injection system fuse box is located under panel D. The main fuse box is also located under panel D, beside the battery. (See page 6-7 for panel removal and installation procedures.) If a fuse is blown, replace it as follows. 1. Turn the key to “OFF” and turn off the electrical circuit in question. 2. Remove the blown fuse, and then install a new fuse of the specified amperage. 1. Fuel injection system fuse 2. The key cannot be removed. NOTE: The headlight comes on automatically when the engine is started and stays on until the key is turned to “OFF”, even if the engine stalls. The shorter section of the harness will end at the brake lines. Continue along the brake lines to the main harness of the motorcycle to the shelter, then up through the shelter to the pocket area. 5. Locate the harness connectors under the pocket. Go to step 6. 2006 & NEWER MODELS 2006 & NEWER MODELS 2006 & NEWER MODELS 2006 & NEWER MODELS Route the long end of harness (blue wire and orange wire), under the relay box and connect to the Positions Relay. 6. Connect the orange wire to the orange wire with white tracer using a scotch-lok connector. Connect the blue wire to the light blue wire with white tracer using a scotch-lok connector. 7. Route the red and white wires behind the fuel tank, along the left side wiring harness to the fuse box. 8. Connect the RED wire with eyelet connector attached, to the positive side of the accessory terminal in the fuse box. 9. Connect the WHITE wire to the negative battery terminal. 10. Connect the brown wire with white tracer to the brown wire with white tracer (tail relay in relay box) using a scotch-lok connector. 11. Route the orange wire with black tracer and the white wire behind the fuel tank, with at least 6 inches of wire left hanging below the bike. 12. Reinstall the right fairing pocket with the two M3 Phillips head screws and two trim clips. 13. Replace the right front side cover and the right and left rear side covers. 14. Replace the seat and passenger grip handles with the four M8 x 1.25 socket head cap screws

INSTALLATION In order to install The Freak, the factory air-box must be removed. Because of it’s design, the factory air-box is not an item that is easily removed. There are several parts that must be removed in order to get the air-box out of the bike in one piece. We recommend using the following method to remove your air box without having to cut it into smaller pieces in order to get it out of the frame. 1. PARTS REMOVAL In order to gain access to the air-box, it is necessary to remove certain parts of the motorcycle to gain access to the air-box area of the frame. Removing the following parts should be the first steps you take. A. Seats – Remove both seats starting with the passenger pillion, if applicable. B. Side cover and grommets – Remove the plastic side cover on the right side (throttle side) of your motorcycle. This is the faux oil-tank cover that has the name of your bike on it. Underneath the side cover there are three rubber grommets (1 on the frame tab, and two on the air-box) that support the side cover. Remove the two that are on the air-box and leave the one on the frame. You will attach the two that you removed to the right side bracket in Section 4C . C. Faux air filter covers – On the right side of the bike, remove the chrome faux air filter covers, by removing the one allen head screw that holds it onto the air-box. On the left hand side (clutch side) remove the faux air filter cover in the same manner, you removed the one on the right. D. Plastic shrouds – on the left side, remove the black plastic air-box shroud, by removing the two allen head screws holding it in place. Then remove the plastic shroud covering your fuse box (this is the piece that surrounds your ignition terminal next to the battery). E. Battery – Remove the battery by unscrewing the torx-head bolt that holds the chrome bracket in place. Remove the chrome bracket and the black plastic cap. Tilt the battery out of the box with the top towards you. Disconnect both battery terminal connectors, negative (-) terminal first. Remove the battery. F. Battery box – Remove the two bolts that hold the battery box to the frame. Pull the battery box out as far as you can, then remove the the ignition terminal from the battery box, by removing the two allen screws that hold it in place from the back. Next, remove the fuse box from the battery box, by pushing it out from the back. It is not necessary to disconnect any of the wiring going to the fuse box, or the ignition terminal. G. Rear fender – Remove the rear fender, by first disconnecting the taillight wires. Follow the wires from the tail light assembly on the inside of the rear fender (left side) towards the front of the bike until you come to the box connector. Disconnect the tail light wires at this connector, being careful not to break it. Once the wiring is disconnected, remove the 6 bolts that hold it to the struts. Have someone hold the fender for you while you are removing all of the bolts so that it does not drop once the bolts are removed. Slide the fender out the rear of the bike. 2. PREPARE THE MOTORCYCLE FOR AIR-BOX REMOVAL To remove the factory air-box without damaging it, it is necessary to lift the bike. We recommend the use of a multi-position ATV/motorcycle jack with a minimum lift height of 10″. A. Setting up the lift – Place the lift under your bike and secure your bike to the lift according to the lift manufacturer’s instructions. B. Raise slightly – Lift the motorcycle to the point where the rear springs are without tension, but NOT to where the rear tire is off the ground. C. Remove the rear springs – Take off each of the rear springs by removing the the two bolts on each spring. Once all the bolts are removed gently pull the springs out off of the studs. If they do not pull off easily, you can raise or lower the bike slightly with the lift to ease tension on the spring. Remember, you should not have the rear tire off the ground at this point. The bike should only be raised enough to relax the tension in the springs. D. Remove the mufflers – Remove the mufflers by loosening the clamp at the exhaust header, and by removing the rear foot peg hangers. If the mufflers are not removed, they can become damaged by the axles in Section 2H . E. Disconnect the carburetors – With a small flathead screwdriver, pull the retainer springs out of the channel of the carburetor intake tubes (the two large black tubes coming from the air box into the back of each carburetor), and simply push them towards the air box off of the carbs
