REMOVE CLUTCH CABLE 1. See Figure 1. Loosen clutch adjuster to obtain slack in the clutch cable (2) by performing the following: a. Locate cable adjuster (1) and slide off rubber boot (4). b. While holding cable adjuster with 1/2-inch wrench, loosen jam nut (3) using a 9/16-inch wrench. c. Turn cable adjuster until there is a large amount of free play at hand lever. 1 2 3 4 is 00889 1. Remove the clutch release cover, being careful not to damage the gasket. NOTE The clutch release cover gasket (P/N 36801-87B) will need to be replaced if torn or damaged to prevent transmission fluid from leaking from the release cover. 4 3 5 2 6 1 is 00894 Figure 3. Pull inner ramp (2) and coupling (5) out of side cover. Hold inner and outer ramps together to keep balls from falling free. 6. Rotate the inner ramp to a position that will allow the coupling (5) to be disconnected from the inner ramp lever arm. Disconnect coupling from inner ramp. Disconnect cable end from coupling. 7. Back out threaded cable fitting from side cover. Ensure that o-ring is removed with cable. Discard o-ring. INSTALL CLUTCH CABLE 1. See Figure 4. Obtain braided stainless steel clutch cable from kit. Apply a light coat of oil on new o-ring and install o-ring (Part Number 11179) onto threaded portion of clutch cable (4). Insert clutch cable fitting (3) into clutch release cover. Do not tighten cable fitting at this time. 2. Connect cable end to coupling. Rotate ramps for best access and install coupling on inner ramp. Place ramp assembly in position in side cover. 3. Install retaining ring. Position retaining ring opening so it is located approximately over the outer ramp tang (the stop that prevents rotation). NOTE Replace clutch release cover gasket if torn or damaged. 4. See Figure 3. Place gasket, if removed, on side cover and install side cover. Tighten the six screws in the order shown to 84-108 in-lbs (10-12 Nm) . 5. Tighten the clutch cable fitting to 36-60 in-lbs (4-7 Nm) . 6. Place a few drops of oil inside cable housing. 7. Route clutch cable as follows: SOFTAIL MODELS FXSTD, FLSTS, FXSTS and FXST – Route clutch cable from the clutch release cover, across the frame, up along the front frame downtubes and across the front of the handlebars. Cable straps (item 1 in service parts illustration) to be used in same location as original equipment straps. FLSTF and FLSTC – Route clutch cable from the clutch release cover, across the frame and up along the front frame down- tubes, up to and behind the handlebars. Cable straps (item 1 in service parts illustration) to be used in same location as original equipment straps. DYNA MODELS FXDWG – Route clutch cable from the clutch release cover, under frame and across to the left side. See Figure 5. Insert cable (1) into clip (2) at the bottom left side of the frame

INSTALLATION 1. See Figure 1. Install the oil cooler (2) to the frame with three clamps (4), three socket head screws (1), three nuts (5) and six washers (3) from the kit. Orient the clamps flat side forward and on the forward side of the oil cooler. Tighten the three oil cooler mounting screws to 96-120 in- lbs (10.9-13.5 Nm) . 2. See Figure 2. Remove the spin-on oil filter and oil filter adapter (1) from oil filter mount location. Clean the oil filter mounting area thoroughly. Discard oil filter and adapter. 1 3 4 4 4 3 5 2 is03387 1. Oil Cooler Clamp Installation NOTE The oil cooler adapter assembly has two flanges protruding out of the back side. The flanges must be installed toward the oil filter mounting location and through the oil adapter gasket. 3. See Figure 3. From the kit, install the oil cooler adapter gasket (3) onto the oil cooler adapter assembly (1). The oil cooler adapter assembly flanges should be aligned so it is installed into the oil adapter cooler gasket cutout as shown. NOTE Due to the locating flanges, the oil cooler adapter assembly and gasket will only install properly in one position on the oil filter mounting surface. 4. See Figure 3. Install the oil cooler adapter assembly and gasket onto the oil filter mounting surface of the engine with the mounting fitting (2). Ensure adapter locates properly in the mounting surface. Ensure the raised lip of the mounting fitting faces the adapter assembly. Tighten mounting fitting to 12-16 ft-lbs (16.3-21.7 Nm) .NOTE Slide hose clamps from the kit onto the hoses prior to installa- tion. 1 2 is00754 1. Oil filter adapter 2. See Figure 5. Obtain the left side cooler hose (4) and right side cooler hose (5) from kit. Follow the markings on hoses to connect onto the oil cooler and oil cooler adapter, as shown. 6. Fasten hoses to oil cooler adapter and oil cooler with worm drive clamps (6). Tighten clamps to 8.0 in-lbs (0.9 Nm) . 7. Lubricate a new oil filter’s seal with new engine oil. Thread filter on until seal touches mounting surface, then turn an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn. NOTE Position the clamps to avoid interference with oil filter installation. Check that hose routing is clear of the oil filter and sharp edges. The hoses must be free of bends or kinks that could obstruct oil flow. 8. Ensure all cables and harnesses are clear of the oil cooler adapter, in order to prevent wear. 9. Thoroughly clean the oil cooler of all dirt, grease and wax with isopropyl alcohol. Use the alcohol to clean the chrome oil cooler cover as needed. Allow to dry. is00745 Figure 4. Apply Sealant Inside Chrome Cover 10. See Figure 4. Apply sealant to the inside of the chrome cover as shown, at the upper and lower corners. NOTES Be careful to avoid getting sealant on the oil cooler cooling fins. Do not operate the motorcycle for 24 hours to allow the sealant to fully cure. 11. Slip the cover over the oil cooler. Remove any excess sealant from the front and back of the oil cooler. Hold the cover firmly in place for one minute. System Flow Test 2005 & Later Models or Models with Later Style Dipsticks Oil level cannot be accurately measured on a cold engine. For pre-ride inspection, with motorcycle leaning on jiffy stand on level ground, oil should register on dipstick between arrows when engine is cold. DISASSEMBLY For 5 speed gear set removal refer to your factory service manual. You willneed to remove the main drive gear, main drive gear bearings, retaining clip & countershaft needle bearings. NOTE: Removal of the shifter arm is notnecessary for 99 & earlier transmissions. NOTE: Removal of the shifter arm isnecessary for 2000 & later transmissions. After trans. housing is disassembled thoroughly clean & inspect. ASSEMBLY For 2000 & later models removal of approximately 1/4 of an inch off of the shifter arm bushing is likely required. Doing so will allow installation of the retaining clip & washer onto the shifter arm. It is good practice to double check how much material should be removed before cutting the bushing. See fig. 1 & 2 Install supplied Main drive gear bearings & countershaft needle bearings using special tool # 97-164 NOTE: Lightly coat bearings with assembly lube or gear oil for easier installation. Install supplied Main drive gear retaining clip & verify that it is fully seated and cannot come out. Do not re-use old bearings or retaining clip. Install supplied Main drive gear into bearings using special tool # 97-166 See fig. 3 Install supplied trap door gasket & verify that it is on correctly. Install supplied 6 speed gear set making sure to align the countershaft with the needle bearing assembly. Slowly slide in gear set until the mainshaft & countershaft will not slide in any further. Lightly tapping on the trap door (while verifying that there is no interference) with a soft blow hammer will then fully seat the shafts & trap door. See fig. 4 Once gear set is installed use the supplied 5/16-18×1-1/2 & 1/4-20×1-1/2 bolts to secure the trap door. Torque the 5/16 bolts to 15 ft-lbs w/ red loctite (high strength) Torque the 1/4 bolts to 9 ft-lbs w/ red loctite (high strength) See fig. 5

See Figure 1. When installing Screamin’ Eagle camshaft kits, install the O-ring included in this kit over the splined shaft of the rear camshaft as shown. 1. Using the Camshaft Assembly Tool (HD-47956) and assemble the camshafts, chains and tensioners to the billet cam support plate. 2. Install the cam support plate assembly into the crankcase. 3. Using the Crankshaft/Camshaft Locking Tool (HD-47941), install cam sprockets, chain and tensioner. 4. Install cam cover and gasket. 5. Install Maxi fuse.

Additional Parts Required Loctite® 222 (purple) Installation NOTE If there are any rough edges around enrichener knob that prevent enrichener knob cover from sliding in place, remove them using fine grit sandpaper or emery cloth. 1. Installation with Stock Pushrods Refer to the service manual for your motorcycle model. Installation with Adjustable Pushrods Lifter-Cover Removal Installing or removing the pushrods with the valve train loaded can result in engine damage. On the cylinder being serviced, always set the lifters to the base circle on the cam before servicing pushrods, lifters, rocker arms, and valves. 1. Set the lifters of the rear cylinder to their lowest point, or base circle, on the cam. Refer to Setting the Lifters to the Base Circle in this instruction sheet. 2. See Figure 1. Insert a screwdriver into the slot on the side of the spring-cap retainer on the pushrod cover. 3. Press the spring-cap and retainer down while pulling outward to remove the spring-cap retainer. 4. See Figure 2. Lift the lower pushrod cover to reveal the lower third of the pushrod. 5. If the engine has stock pushrods installed and you are installing adjustable pushrods with this lifter-cover installation, go to step 6. If the engine already has adjustable pushrods installed and you are installing adjustable pushrods with this lifter-cover installation, go to step 7 6. Use a bolt cutter or similar tool to cut the stock pushrod. Avoid cutting the pushrods with a saw, grinder, or other method that may allow metal debris into the engine. Go to step 8. 7. Loosen the jam nut on each adjustable pushrod and resize each rod to its shortest length. 8. Remove the pushrod covers and pushrods from the engine. 9. Remove the O-rings from the seats in the engine at the top and bottom of the pushrod cover. 10. Remove the four screws fastening the lifter cover to the engine to remove the cover and gasket. 11. Remove old lifter-cover gasket material from the engine, taking care not to allow material to fall into the engine. Continue to Lifter-Cover Installation in this I-Sheet. Lifter-Cover Installation 1. See Figure 3. Verify that the lifter anti-rotation pin is in position. Installing or removing the pushrods with the valve train loaded can result in engine damage. On the cylinder being serviced, always set the lifters to the base circle on the cam before servicing pushrods, lifters, rocker arms, and valves. 2. Verify that the cylinder lifters are set to their lowest point, or base circle, on the cam. Refer to Setting the Lifters to the Base Circle in this instruction sheet. 3. Fasten the new lifter-cover gasket and chrome billet lifter cover to the engine using the chrome screws from this kit. In a cross pattern, torque the lifter-cover screws to 90 – 120 in-lbs (10.2 – 13.6 Nm). 4. See Figure 4. Loosen the jam nut on all of the pushrods and adjust the pushrods to their shortest length. NOTE See Figures 4 and 5. Install the narrow-band pushrods in the cylinder-intake location. Install the wide-band pushrods in the cylinder-exhaust location. 5. Assemble the O-rings (purchased separately) and pushrod covers. 6. Install the pushrods with the pushrod covers. The adjustment-end of the pushrod must be on the lifter

REMOVAL To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b) 1. Remove the main fuse. Refer to the service manual. 2. Remove the existing air cleaner backplate. Refer to the service manual. Save the original equipment (OE) button head screw that secures the air cleaner cover. Discard the remaining parts. 3. Remove the fuel tank. Refer to the service manual. 4. See Figure 1. Remove and discard the induction module support bracket. is05912 Figure 1. Remove Induction Module Support Bracket INSTALLATION Air Cleaner Installation Use only supplied air cleaner cover. Use of another air cleaner cover could cause element failure and detachment of the air cleaner cover, which could distract the rider and result in death or serious injury. (00596b) NOTE When servicing the air cleaner, apply Loctite 243 – Blue to the threads of all fasteners. 1. See Figure 3. Install two O-rings (1) from the kit in the grooves around the breather bolt holes on the induction module side of the backplate assembly (2). Install the remaining two O-rings in the grooves in the underside of the heads of the breather bolts (5). 2. Remove the liner from the adhesive backing of the gasket (3). Carefully position the adhesive side of the gasket to the backplate, aligning to the equally spaced screw holes, and press the gasket firmly into place. 3. Insert new breather bolts (5) through the backplate. 4. Apply Loctite 243 – Blue to the breather bolt threads and the mating tapped holes in the cylinder head. 5. Thread the bolts into the cylinder head, but do not tighten. 6. Thread the air cleaner mounting studs (4) all the way through the backplate (2) until the screw threads are captured in the induction module. Do not tighten completely at this time. 7. Alternately tighten the two breather bolts to 120-144 in- lbs (13.6-16.3 Nm) . 8. Tighten the three air cleaner studs to 55-60 in-lbs (6.2- 6.8 Nm) . 9. Install the fuel tank. Remove and discard the original screws and timer cover. 2. Place new timer cover (1) in position and secure with chrome screws (2). NOTE For kits 32584-88TA, 32668-98A, and 32571-98A, refer to steps 3 through 8. 3. Use a 3/8 in. drill bit and drill the heads off the original timer cover rivets. Remove original timer cover. NOTE If the inner timer cover has been riveted in place and access to the cam position sensor is required, use a left hand drill and carefully remove the rivet heads. If a right hand drill is used, the sensor plate screw heads could break off when trying to remove the rivet. NOTE To make the cam position sensor tamper proof, follow steps 4 through 6. If the cam position sensor is not required to be tamper proof, skip steps 4 through 6. 4. Remove and discard inner cover retaining screws. Leave gasket (if used) and inner cover in position. 5. See Figure 1. Place washers (4) over rivets (3) and place rivets into inner cover holes so the backs of the rivets go into the sensor plate screws’ tapped holes. 6. Use a standard rivet tool and install rivets, securing inner cover to sensor plate screws. 7. Use the self-tapping screw (5) to cut threads into the remaining inner cover holes. Discard screw after use. 8. Place new timer cover (1) in position over inner cover (A) and secure with chrome screws (2). NOTE For kit 32581-90TB, refer to steps 9 and 10. 9. Use 3/8 in. drill bit and drill the heads off the timer cover rivets. Remove original timer cover. 10. Place new timer cover in position and secure with chrome screws (Part Number 9462) from kit
