Remove the gear shift lever bolt by using a 5mm Allen wrench. Insert the wrench through the hole in the skid plate. Holding the gear shifter up in second gear makes it easier to align the wrench into the head of the bolt. Pull the gear shift lever as far as possible towards the chain. (The chain does not have to be removed in order to remove the ignition cover and flywheel) Remove the three ignition cover bolts by using a 4mm Allen wrench. Carefully remove the ignition cover-which requires a little twisting and some outward pressure on the gear shift lever. The shift lever may also have to be pressed down into the first gear position. Inspect the rubber ring gasket for cracks or cuts while the ignition cover is off. Replace if necessary. We recommended applying a ring of high grade silicone sealant to further improve the seal of the rubber ring gasket. Tap a chisel-mark across the flywheel retaining nut and the crankshaft by using a small, sharp chisel. This mark serves as a reference point for retightening the flywheel in its original position during reassembly.

This type of engine requires a mixture of petrol and oil. To ensure the correct working of the engine, the following are recommended: – Use high quality petrol, with an octane rating equal to or above 90 (RON + MON)/2 or 98 (RON). – Use 2T synthetic oil. Warning: – If the recommended oil is not available, use semi-synthetic oil. – Do not mix different oil-types. Mixture ratio: oil, 1.5% of petrol volume (50 parts petrol to every 0.75 part oil). Note: we recommend first preparing the mixture in a suitable container and then filling the fuel tank. Fuel tank This has a rapid access cap A and a vent hose B to allow gases produced in the tank to escape. – To open the cap, lift the clip in the direction shown by the arrow and turn to the left. Warning! Regularly check the cap seal and vent hose to ensure they are leak proof. Risk of spillage. -10- 3 2 Reserve Open Closed Fuel tap This has three positions: open, closed and reserve. The diagrams below show the position of tap A for each case. A Gear shift The motorcycle has a two- speed gearbox, which may be selected manually when the motorcycle is stationary, by moving the lever A in a horizontal direction, as shown by the arrow. Note: Select the gear according to the characteristics of the track

The K 1300 S with 175 hp, the K 1300 R with 173 hp and the K 1300 GT with 160 hp. The new K bikes feature updated transmission and clutch assembly, plus smoother engine performance and new switchgear. Von Kuenheim continues: “By raising capacity to 1300 cc, our engineers have not only increased output but also torque on all three models. At the same time the driveline was intensively revised from air/fuel mixture formation right through to the exhaust system. In this way we have been able to optimize partial load behavior as well as throttle response. Now the clutch can be operated with even less effort and with greater refinement. Shifting has been improved tangibly due to constructional changes to the gearbox and drive.” BMW is introducing new options for the 2009 as well. The popular Electronic Suspension Adjustment that first appeared on the 2005 K 1200 S has now been updated with even more on-the-fly adjustability and it’s called ESA II. Also new is the quick-shifter option, racing-style gear shift assistant, borrowed from BMW’s race-ready HP2 Sport. Automatic Stability Control (ASC) is also offered as an option on the new K bikes. “Both the K 1300 S and also the R will also have the shift assistant – familiar from the HP2 Sport – available as an option for the first time,” von Kuenheim emphasized. “We have also advanced the chassis. The new lower longitudinal strut is now made of aluminum and is thus considerably lighter. This makes the front wheel guidance response even more sensitive. The result of this comprehensive development work is superior handling, improved rideability and lower fuel consumption. The electronically adjustable suspension – called ESA in short – was launched as a world first on the K 1200 S. Now we are presenting the new, well-proven ESA II as an option for the K Series. Apart from the suspension and damping this unique system also allows the spring rate to be adjusted at the press of a button. The K Series model revision also heralds a new and innovative generation of switches and controls.

19 Kick lever Is designed to start the engine. On pressing the lever the crankshaft of the engine is actuated through the gearbox. The lever is returned to its initial position by the spring inside the gearbox. Gear shift foot pedal Is a two-arm type. When the front arm is depressed, shifting from higher to lower gear takes place. When the rear arm is depressed, shifting from lower to higher gear takes place. Since the heel-toe shift lever is short-coupled, you will find it easier to shift into a higher gear if you do not use your heel to shift, rather the ball of your foot. The neutral position is fixed between the 1st and 2nd gears. It is important to shift smoothly with a constant force and not to kick the gear shift pedal. Serious damage may result to the shifting mechanism if the gear shift pedal is kicked, rather than pushed. IMPORTANT! The green pilot lamp will illuminate when either the transmission is in neutral or when the reverse gear is engaged (see “Starting the Engine”). Turn indicator pilot lamp indicates that the turn signals are activated. Alternator fault indicator lamp , indicates that the charging system is malfunctioning and needs immediate attention. Gearbox neutral and reverse gear engagement , indicates that the gearbox is either in neutral or in reverse. Head lamp high beam indicator , indicates that the headlight high beam is activated. Speedometer is on the dash board, with trip and total odometer. The trip odometer is reset to zero by rotating knob (Fig.1, # 3) counterclockwise. Note that the odometer reads in kilometers not miles.
