Install the new pushrods into the pushrod covers using the appropriate service manual procedures. Be sure the larger end of the tapered pushrods are installed to the tappet sockets. 5. Repeat step 4 for the rear cylinder. NOTE Check for contact between the pushrods and the upper pushrod covers. Check by rotating the engine slowly until both valves have fully opened and closed on the cylinder you are checking. If contact is observed, the rocker arm supports should be shifted toward the engine’s cam side. 6. Complete all the appropriate service manual procedures for assembling the engine. 7. Complete all service manual procedures for the assembly of the motorcycle. 8. Return the transmission to neutral and install the spark plugs. 9. Connect the negative (-) battery cable. INSTALLATION To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. (00307a) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a) 1. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the battery cables, negative (-) cable first. Retain all seat mounting hardware. When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a) Original Equipment (OE) Air Cleaner Removal For carbureted models: Refer to the service manual and check the warm-slow idle speed adjustment before removing the OE air cleaner backplate. For EFI (fuel-injected) models: Have a Harley-Davidson dealer recalibrate the ECM prior to air cleaner installation. 2. Remove the air cleaner backplate following the instructions in the service manual. Retain the two breather screws (A) removed from the backplate (see Figure 1). The remaining parts can be discarded. 3. See Figure 1. Remove and discard induction module bracket (B). “Heavy Breather” Air Cleaner Installation NOTE When servicing the air cleaner, apply Loctite 243 (blue) to all threaded fasteners (both male and female threads). 4. Install the new O-rings (4) in the grooves around the breather screw holes on the carburetor or induction module side of the backplate (1 or 2)

Tuning the HSR42/ 45 Carburetor

your Mikuni HSR is fitted with the tuning parts we found to work with the great majority of engine performance modifications. However, the large number of differing exhaust systems and cams available makes it impossible to accommodate all possible combinations with one carburetor set-up. Your HSR will almost certainly run correctly on your engine without exchanging any parts. But, if it doesn’t, you may alter its tuning to suit your engine’s needs by following this guide. Some exhaust system designs strongly interfere with carburetor tuning. For instance, it is very difficult to get smooth and responsive carburetion through the entire rpm range with straight pipes and completely open exhausts. In addition, very small volume, small diameter mufflers are often ‘seen’ by the engine as straight pipes and present the same tuning difficulties. Very long duration cams often cause relatively poor running below about 3,000 rpm, depending upon the individual cam’s intake valve closing point. Such cams cause reverse airflow out the mouth of the carburetor (often called “reversion” or “standoff”) that can be mistaken for a carburetor tuning problem. Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle performance parts are proven and predictable. If you have any doubts about a particular exhaust system, air cleaner or ignition, you may substitute the Harley Screamin’ Eagle parts as a “reality check.” When re-tuning is required, it usually involves small alterations to the idle and/or main system. The following pages supply enough information to make such alterations relatively simple. Please note that there is no point in attempting to tune any carburetor unless the engine is sound and in a good state of tune. If you have any doubts about the general condition of your engine, have it checked by your dealer or an experienced mechanic before attempting to fine-tune your Mikuni.
