1. Be sure motorcycle is properly secured before you begin. 2. Remove saddlebags and place aside. 3. Begin removing your stock mufflers. Starting on one side of the bike, loosen the clamp securing the muffler to the headpipe. Remove the two bolts securing the muffler to the mounting bracket on the saddlebag support of the bike. Keep these bolts for use with your new slip-on mufflers. 4. Using supplied clamp over new slip-on muffler install over stock headpipe. Align the mount tab with holes in the mounting bracket on the saddlebag support. Note that there is a left and a right side pipe. The clearance dent is on the side closest to the swingarm providing clearance on many models. Secure pipe with stock bolts. Be sure to apply Loctite® to bolts upon re-installation. 5. Securely tighten bolts, and then tighten the clamp securing the slip-on muffler to the headpipe. 6. On the opposite side of the bike, repeat steps 3-5. 7. Reinstall saddlebags. 8. Be sure to check proper alignment and clearances before riding. 9. Every time you perform regular maintenance be sure to re-torque all clamps and fasteners. 1. Remove fork springs according to instructions contained in your shop manual. For maximum performance we highly recommend that the forks be thoroughly cleaned, inspected and new fork oil installed. Note: If your motorcycle comes equipped with two fork springs in each leg (long & short), remove and discard both springs and the flat washer between the springs. If a stock spacer exits, remove it. If there is a short spring on the damper rod, do not remove it! 2. Use the recommended fork oil viscosity as noted in your owners manual with the following exceptions: GL1100 20 weight, GL1200/1500 15 weight required. See fine tuning for more in- formation. Fork oil level/volume should be checked according to the steps outlined in your authorized shop manual. Measurement of your fork oil by level is the preferred method. However, some manuals only specify a volume measurement. Due to the design of a progressive wound fork spring it will displace more oil thus requiring a maximum oil level of 5.5″ (140mm). Caution: This is not a recommendation, it is only a precautionary statement. If your manual specifies an oil level higher than 5.5″ (140mm) set the oil level at 5.5″ (140mm). (Oil level is the distance from the top of the fork tube to the top of the oil with the fork completely collapsed and the fork spring removed see figure 1.) This measurement can be made by using either one of the Progressive Suspension Fork Oil Level Adjusters (FOL-1 or FOL-2). 3. Install your new fork springs into the forks. Mechanically, it makes no difference which way the springs are installed. Some manuals will state; install the spring with the close wound end towards the bottom. This is done because sometimes there will be less spring noise. The springs will perform exactly the same regardless of which direction they are placed. Check the spacer length requirement for your motorcycle in the enclosed supplement. If not listed, you must calculate the pre-load. What is pre-load? Pre-load is the distance the spring compresses when the fork cap is installed. You may or may not utilize a spacer to achieve proper pre-load. The spacer in itself is not “pre-load”. It just helps to achieve it. Why is pre-load important? It determines the proper ride height which in turn affects how the bike handles.

Remove the exhaust mounting bar, saving the three mount bolts and washers for re-use. 8. Using snapring pliers, carefully remove the flanges and circlips from the stock exhaust system. Save for re-use. Note: If circlips look bent or twisted replace them with new circlips.

Remove the two bolts from each muffler which attach the mufflers to the mounting bar. 6. Remove the mufflers by sliding them off the head pipes. 7. Remove the clamp from the nose of each muffler (these will be re-used when installing the new mufflers). 8. Remove the gaskets from the crossover ports on the stock mufflers. Inspect the gaskets and replace if damaged or worn (H-D part #65927-00). 9. Install crossover gaskets onto mounting bar on motorcycle. VANCE & HINES EXHAUST SYSTEM INSTALLATION 1. Remove mufflers and heat shields from protective packaging. 2. Slide the nut plate inside the bracket that is welded to the backside of each muffler body and attach the muffler bodies to the mounting brackets (stamped 379-P) using four 5/16″ x 5/8″ flange head bolts (supplied). Leave them loose at this time (Figure 1). 3. Slide stock exhaust clamp onto nose of each muffler. 4. Slide mufflers onto head pipes and align crossover port with gasket on mounting bar (Figure 2). Press into place on gasket. 5. Attach the muffler brackets to the stock mounting bar using four 5/16″ x 3/4″ hex head bolts, washers, and nuts (supplied). Leave them loose at this time (Figure 3). 6. Tighten cylinder port exhaust flange nuts on front and rear cylinders. 7. Install and tighten the clamp bolt which mounts the rear head pipe to the belt drive cover bracket. 8. Align muffler and bracket so they sit level. Tighten the muffler mounting bolts and the bracket mounting bolts. 9. Tighten the clamp holding the muffler onto the head pipe.

Save for re-use. NOTE: If circlips look bent or twisted replace them with new circlips. VANCE & HINES EXHAUST SYSTEM INSTALLATION 1. Check condition of stock exhaust gaskets. Replace if damaged or worn. Vance & Hines recommends you replace your gaskets with Screamin’ Eagle gaskets part number 17048-98. 2. Install and tighten supplied mounting bracket (stamped 356-P) using stock bolts and washers (Figure 1). Torque to 30-33 Ft/Lbs. NOTE: Support the rear of the bracket during tightening to insure it is aligned with the bottom edge of the frame. 3. Re-install drive belt cover. Torque to 1 x 3/8″ bolt 30-33 Ft/Lbs. 2 x 1/4″ bolts 80-120 In/Lbs. 4. Re-install brake rod eyelet using blue thread locking compound (Loctite® 243). There is a 1/2″ clearance hole in the bracket to allow access for tightening brake rod eyelet. Torque to 120/180 In/Lbs. (Figure 1). 5. Remove header pipes and heat shields from protective packaging. Place each heat shield on a non-abrasive surface such as a blanket or carpet. Using a felt tip pen, mark outside edge of each heat shield to show location of mounting clips where hose clamps will loop through (Figure 2). 6. Install circlips and flanges from the stock system onto both new head pipes.

Normal Engine Stop 1. Shift the transmission into neutral. 2. Turn the fuel valve OFF. 3. Lightly open the throttle (1) 2 – 3 times, and then close it. 4. Depress and hold the engine stop button (2) until the engine stops completely. Failure to close the fuel valve may cause the carburetor to overflow, result in hard starting. Akrapovic Racing system is designed for riders who demand maximum performance from their motorcycle. System is almost 10 kg lighter, if compared to the stock exhaust system and feature exceptional production quality, hi-tech materials and of course increased engine performance combined with pure racing sound output. The Racing system uses stainless steel header tubes and link pipe. We offer titanium or carbon-fiber mufflers. System is not street legal and is designed for racing purpose. PERFORMANCE Measurements of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION system on the KAWASAKI Z 1000 (without muffler insert): Power & Torque: The power increase with the Akrapovic system is substantial, and can be seen from 5000 rpm right to the top of the range. At 10250 rpm we measured 141.2 HP, with a max. power increase of 14.1 HP at 10300 rpm. The system’s effect on the torque and power curve is huge and strongest at midrange rpm. The main increase starts at around 2500 rpm and continues right into the over-rev range. All this will help you shave lap times and result in a much smoother rid
