Throttle override system (T.O.R.S.) If the carburetor or throttle cable should malfunction during operation, the T.O.R.S. will operate when the throttle lever is released. The T.O.R.S. is designed to interrupt the ignition and keep the engine revolution speed between 2,800 and 3,000 r/min if the carburetor fails to return to idle when the lever is released. Speedometer unit The speedometer unit is equipped with the following: a digital speedometer (which shows riding speed) an odometer (which shows the total distance traveled) a tripmeter (which shows the distance traveled since it was last set to zero) warning indicators (which show self-diagnosis, cool ant temperature, fuel level, and oil level warnings) fuel meter (which shows the fuel remaining in the fuel tank) grip/thumb warmer heat level indicator  (which shows the heat level of the grip warmer or the thumb warmer) After the engine is started, the tachometer 1 makes one sweep, and the warning light 2 and all segments of the meter 3 turn on and off once. Then the warning light turns on again, and then goes off if there are no problems. The grip warmer heat level is initially displayed for 5 seconds, then switches to the fuel meter display. Odometer and tripmeter modes Pushing the select/reset button 4 switches the display between the odometer mode “ODO” and the tripmeter mode “TRIP”. To reset the tripmeter, push the select/reset button for at least one second while the tripmeter is displayed. NOTE: @ To switch the speedometer, odometer, and tripmeter displays between kilometers and miles, select the odometer mode “ODO”, and then push the select/reset button 4 for at least 10 seconds. REMOVING THE OLD SPEEDOMETER NOTE This Instruction Sheet covers several different Harley-Davidson models and years. Make sure you locate and follow the procedures that apply to the motorcycle receiving the new gauge. 1. Apply power to motorcycle and record the odometer reading. 2. Remove the seat according to the procedure in the applicable Service Manual. To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a) 3. Disconnect battery cables, negative cable first. NOTE Cover the fuel tank with clean shop towels to prevent scratching. Damage to the finish could result. 4. Remove the instrument console acorn nut (and mounting screw with a flat washer on some models). Lay clean shop towels on the fuel tank. Lift the console from the fuel tank, turn it upside down and lay it on the towels. NOTE If necessary, bend back the flexible metal clip to free the harness conduit from the underside of the console. 5. Unplug the 12-terminal connector [39B] from the back of the speedometer. Depress the external latches and use a rocking motion to separate the pin and socket halves. 6. Remove the back clamp. All models except FXSTD: Gently pry the three latches upward to release the back clamp from the back of the speedometer. FXSTD: Depress the three external legs of the lock ring, then gently pry the three latches upward to release the back clamp from the back of the speedometer. 7. Unscrew the trip-meter reset button, and pull the harness from the clamp (remove the screw if necessary). 8. Lift the console and remove the old speedometer from the console. Discard the old speedometer, but retain the rubber gasket and back clamp for use with the new gauge. NOTE Set the console securely on the towel-covered fuel tank, and take care that it does not fall off during the following operations. 9. Set the console securely on the fuel tank

Always keep the battery charged. Storing a discharged battery can cause permanent battery damage. ● To charge a sealed-type (MF) battery, a special (constant- voltage) battery charger is required. Using a conventional battery charger will damage the battery. If you do not have access to a sealed-type (MF) battery charger, have a Yamaha dealer charge your battery. EAU04076* Replacing the fuses The fuse box, which contains the fuses for the individual circuits, is located under panel D. The fuel injection system fuse box is located under panel D. The main fuse box is also located under panel D, beside the battery. (See page 6-7 for panel removal and installation procedures.) If a fuse is blown, replace it as follows. 1. Turn the key to “OFF” and turn off the electrical circuit in question. 2. Remove the blown fuse, and then install a new fuse of the specified amperage. 1. Fuel injection system fuse 2. Spare fuel injection system fuse 1. Headlight fuse 2. Signaling system fuse 3. Ignition fuse 4. Windshield motor fuse 5. Radiator fan fuse 6. Backup fuse (odometer and clock) 7. Spare fuse (〈 4)
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 6-31 6 EC000103 CAUTION: Do not use a fuse of a higher amperage rating than recommended to avoid causing extensive damage to the electrical system and possibly a fire. 3. Turn the key to “ON” and turn on the electrical circuit in question to check if the device operates. 4. If the fuse immediately blows again, have a Yamaha dealer check the electrical system. EAU04099 Replacing a headlight bulb This motorcycle is equipped with quartz bulb headlights. If a headlight bulb burns out, replace it as follows. 1. Remove panel B (if replacing the left headlight bulb) or panel C (if replacing the right headlight bulb). (See page 6-7 for panel removal and installation procedures.) 2.
