INSTALLATION Perform this installation when the engine is cool. Working on or near the exhaust system when the engine is hot could result in severe burns. (00311a) NOTE XL Sportster 883 and XL1200R models may require loosening or removal of the rear muffler in order to install the right side rear axle cover. See the EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL section of the Service Manual. 1. Support the vehicle, and loosen or remove the rear muffler if necessary. XL Sportster 883 and XL1200R models: Remove the right-side lower shock absorber mounting bolt. Save for re-installation. All other models: Remove and discard the right-side lower shock absorber mounting bolt. 2. Swing the bottom of the shock absorber out of the way. Position the right-side swingarm axle cover (2) over the swingarm and behind the shock absorber. 3. Reposition the shock absorber. XL Sportster 883 and XL1200R models: Install the shock absorber mounting bolt removed in Step 1. All other models: Install the shoulder bolt (3) from the kit. All models: Tighten the bolt to 45-50 ft-lbs (61-68 Nm) . NOTE When torquing the bolt, align two of the bolt-head flats parallel to the ground. This will allow proper orientation of the bar and shield logo on the bolt cover. 4. Position the bolt cover (4) over the bolt head (3) with the Bar-and-Shield logo oriented upright, and lock in place with the set screw (5). Tighten securely. Reposition and tighten the muffler per the Service Manual instructions. 5. Remove and discard the left-side lower shock absorber mounting bolt. Move the bottom of the shock absorber out of the way. Position the left-side swingarm axle cover (2) over the swingarm and behind the shock absorber. 6. Reposition the shock absorber and install the shoulder bolt from the kit. Tighten to 45-50 ft-lbs (61-68 Nm) , aligning two of the bolt head flats parallel to the ground. 7. Position the bolt cover over the bolt head with the Bar-and- Shield logo oriented upright, and lock in place with the set screw. Tighten securely

INSTALLATION FXSTD models only: •See Figure 4. Remove the clutch cable from the plastic clamp (1) on the downtube. Remove and discard the clamp. •Position the engine guard between the front of the down- tubes and behind the clutch cable. All Models 1. See Figure 1 and Figure 2. INSTALLATION 1. See Figure 1. Remove locknuts (1) and screws (2) that hold existing footpegs in place. Save hardware for installation of new footpegs. 2. Remove existing footpegs along with spring washers (3). Save spring washers for installation of new footpegs. 3. Install new footpegs in the same manner as old footpegs were installed: •Place a spring washer (3), along with the mount end of the footpeg, inside the slots of the footpeg supports (4). •Make sure the spring washer is positioned inside the footpeg support with the square edge toward the inside of the support. •Secure each footpeg and spring washer with a screw (2) and locknut (1). •Tighten locknuts to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) . Footrests must fold up and toward rear of motorcycle if struck. Failure to set footrests to fold up and back could result in death or serious injury. (00366a) 4. For each footpeg, remove the screw (5) and rubber pad (6). Loosen the adjusting screw (7) until the footpeg (8) rotates. Position the footpeg (8) as desired, then tighten the adjusting screw to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) . Place the rubber pad (6) on the footpeg and tighten the screw (5)

GL1800 CLEAR FRONT TURNSIGNAL LIGHT Read instructions thoroughly before installing. 1. Place bike on center stand. 2. Remove the screw and mirror from the rearview mirror housing. Figure 1 3. Remove the bulb socket from the turnsignal light by turning it counterclockwise. 4. Pull out the bulb and replace it with the amber bulb. 5. Remove the three screws holding the directional light in the housing. Install the new clear turnsignal light and put the three screws back in to hold. Figure 2 6. Reinstall in the bulb and mirror.

1. Place bike on center stand. 2. Remove the two bolts that hold the stock foot pegs and remove foot peg. 3. Install shifter slot over shifter peg. 4. With the longer bolts supplied, sandwich the Sport Shifter plate between the peg and frame. 5. Screw in bolts and secure tightly. Double check tightness per service manual. 6. CHASSIS BOLT AND NUT Check that all chassis bolts and nuts are tightened to their specified torque. (Refer to below and page 2-29 of SV1000S Service manual for the locations of the following nuts and bolts on the motorcycle.) CHASSIS FRONT FORK REMOUNTING Align the upper surface A of the inner tube with the upper surface B of the steering stem upper bracket. Tighten initially at 1 000 km (600 miles, 1 month) and every 6 000 km (4 000 miles, 6 months) thereafter. SPRING PRE-LOAD ADJUSTMENT There are eight grooves on the spring adjuster. Position 1 provides the maximum spring pre-load and position 8 provides the minimum spring pre-load. STD position: 7 DAMPING FORCE ADJUSTMENT Rebound damping force Fully turn the damping force adjuster 1 clockwise. It is at stiffest position and turn it out to standard setting position. STD position: 1 and 1/4 turns out from stiffest position Compression damping force Fully turn the damping force adjuster 2 clockwise. It is at stiffest position and turn it out to standard setting position. STD position: 1 turn out from stiffest position STANDARD FRONT SUSPENSION SETTING ! INSTALLATION NOTES The cotter pin or spring clip for the rear axle nut must be replaced during assembly and is available for purchase from a Harley-Davidson dealer. The five sprocket mounting screws must be replaced when replacing the sprocket. Remove existing sprocket according to service manual instructions. Remove all residual threadlocking agent from fastener holes using an appropriate thread chasing device and compressed air.

INSTALLATION NOTE When removing rear fender reflectors, be careful not to damage fender paint. 1. Carefully remove the rear reflector. Remove any remaining adhesive from the back side of the reflector and any adhesive from the side of the fender. 2. See Service Parts Illustration. Remove the screws, washers, locknuts and clipnuts that attach the fender support cover and fender support to fender. Discard the button head screws but retain the washers (A), locknuts (B,C) and clipnuts (D) for installation. NOTE Prior to performing the following step, obtain a little slack for the turn signal assembly by reaching under the fender and bending open the aluminum tab on the clip securing wiring to fender. 3. Remove the locknut (B) from the turn signal stud (E) and gently remove the turn signal assembly from fender support cover, fender support and fender. Save locknut for installation. The turn signal will remain loosely attached to motorcycle by rear directional wire. 4. Carefully position the side plate between fender support and fender. While holding sideplate in position, line up the screw mounting holes and make sure the turn signal wiring passes through the cutout (slot) in the side plate. Coat threads of screws (1 and 2) from kit with Loctite 243 (blue) (Harley-Davidson part number 99642-97) and install locknut and clipnut, however do not tighten completely. 5. Add Loctite 243 (blue) (Harley-Davidson part number 99642-97) to turn signal stud and install through fender support cover, fender support, side plate and fender. Install locknut and tighten to 8-13 ft-lbs (11-18 Nm). Making sure sideplate remains aligned, return to fender support screws and tighten to 8-13 ft-lbs (11-18 Nm). 6. Reach under fender and position turn signal wiring into tab on clipnut. 7. Obtain reflector (3) from kit. Peel off protective strip backing and firmly press reflector (3) to side plate (4), centering reflector horizontally and vertically. 8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 on opposite side of fender

REMOVAL 1. Remove the detachable accessory by pressing the release button on each side and pull the latch levers back. Lift the rear of the accessory up and pull the rack off of the front docking points. 2. See Figure 1. Remove the screw (1) and washer (2) from the latch(es) to be replaced by the new locking latch. Save the screw and washer for installation. INSTALLATION See Figure 8. Depending on the installed detachable, the position of the relief (A) and undercuts (B) will be used as spacers or docking point mounts. Verify that the locking latch is positioned so there is key access for unlocking the latch. NOTES Verify that the locking latch is in the unlocked position before installation. Do not leave the key inserted in the locking latch during assembly. Detachable styles may vary from those shown in the illustra- tions. Outer Right Upright Installation 1. Remove right non-locking latch. 2. See Figure 2. Install stock spring washer (2) on mounting hub. 3. Install flat washer (4) (from kit) on mounting hub. 4. Install latch with relief away from the outer right sideplate. 5. Install stock screw (3) and washer (1). 6. Tighten screw to 30-40 in-lbs (3.4-4.5 Nm)
