top out” too easily and fail to allow enough travel for appropriate rebound from bumps. If the ride height is too low, the shock can bottom too easily, resulting in a harsh ride. The spring rates are set up for the full amount of travel. If the preload is too little, the combined rate is not enough to resist bottoming. Generally speaking, the vehicle should settle 1/4 to 1/3 of its wheel travel with the rider on board for off road use. The proper way to measure the ride height: 1. Support the vehicle on a frame stand or center stand with the rear wheel clear of the ground. 2. Have an assistant measure and record the vertical distance between the rear axle and a point directly above it (seat, fender, frame, muffler, etc.). 3. Take the motorcycle off the stand and sit on it in a normal riding posture, with one foot on the peg and the motorcycle balanced so as to have minimal weight on your other foot. 4. Have the assistant carefully measure from the same two points. Subtract the second measurement from the first. The difference is the amount of settling or “sag.” NITROGEN PRESSURES CAUTION: The pressure in these shocks cannot successfully be checked. Concerns with the gauge volume and the gas volume in the shock body create a situation where you cannot accurately determine what pressure was in the shock. In addition, the gas is in a column on top of the oil, and when the pressure is lowered (i.e. checking the pressure) the gas will emulsify into the oil. This will cause the gas and some of the shock oil to escape into the gauge. It is possible to lose a large percentage of the shock oil by depressing the core of a charged shock to the atmosphere. Please note that in order to check the pressure, some of the gas must escape and fill the gauge assembly. The volume of the gas pocket is about the size of your thumb, so a very small volume change results in a large pressure drop. Because the gauges’ volumes vary, it is not possible to deduce the actual pressure in the shock prior to attaching the gauge. Therefore it is imperative that any attempt to check pressure be accompanied by the capability of refilling the shock. In other words: If you don’t have a nitrogen source handy, don’t check the pressure

Place jack under center on the ATV front end and lift until front wheels clear the ground. Be careful to support ATV properly so that it is secure, but so that the A-arms and shocks can droop to full extension. 2. Remove front wheels and shocks. 3. Using a shock spring compressor, compress the spring on the shock and remove the spring retaining ring.
CAUTION: The spring is installed under tension. Failure to use a shock spring compressor could cause loss of control of the spring, which could unload rapidly causing bodily injury. If you do not have a shock spring compressor you should acquire one or take it to a dealer or professional mechanic for installation of the stiffeners. 4. Remove the spring. 5. Insert the smaller front spring stiffener onto the shock with the lip of the spring stop, on the shock, mating into the recessed portion of the spring stiffener. 6. Slide the spring back onto the shock and it should rest on the lip of the spring stiffener.
7. Reattach the spring retaining ring. 8. Repeat steps for the opposite side. Once springs are complete reattach the top of the shock to the top shock mount on the ATV and the spring stiffener will be closest to the A-arm. 9. Take two of the “L” brackets and connect them to the bottom of the shock, the part that connects to the A-arms. 10. There is a top and bottom to the “L” bracket. See the diagram

1. With the bike unloaded on the side stand and the shock fully extended, have an assistant measure from a point at the axle (center point) to a point on the frame, fender or bodywork directly above it. Record this measurement. 2. With the bike off the stand and the rider in the seat, bounce on the suspension and let the bike settle. Have the assistant measure from the same two points. Subtract the second measurement from the first. 3. The amount of settle, or “sag” is a function of the wheel travel. It should only be between 1/4 and 1/3 of the total travel. 4. If the difference is less than the minimum, reduce the spring preload. Measure the distance again starting with Step 2. Adjust again if necessary. 5. If the difference is more than the maximum, increase the spring preload. Measure the distance again starting with Step 2. Adjust again if necessary. Note: If the ride height is too low, the shock will bottom unnecessarily, resulting in a harsh ride. If the ride height is too high, the shock will “top out” too easily when rebounding from a bump or under hard deceleration. Secure and raise motorcycle 9 to 10 inches using a quality motorcycle lift. Remove the following from the vehicle. See OEM manual for detailed instructions. Items to be retained for reinstallation after modification are noted. • Left and right side-covers (to be re-installed with minor modification). • Seat (to be re-installed without modification). • Trunk. • Left and right passenger foot rests (to be re-installed without modification). • Left and right side-covers above passenger foot rests. • Battery and holder (to be re-installed without modification). • Left and right saddle bags (retain side cover mounting grommets for re-use). • Left and right mufflers. • Rear wheel. • Rear brake line to master cylinder.** • Reverse resistor assembly (to be relocated). • Swing Arm (Drive shaft boot will not be used). • Bank angle sensor. • Shocks. Air shock (non coil-over) to be reused. ** Thoroughly vacuum drain rear brake system, including feed line to left front caliper Modification to Trunk / Luggage Stay Removal from vehicle frame is not necessary. a. Cut the down tubes of the trunk stay and remove the lower section as shown in Figures 1 & 2 b. Trim rear upper tube-end rounded corners just outboard of welded nut. Trim line should be parallel with center line of vehicle. This will provide clearance for body when installed. Figure 2 (Inset) c. Remove the Hazard and Turn Signal relays from the center holder; bend Relay Holder Tab up 90°. Relays will be relocated to left and right sides. Figure 3

This kit fits 2002 and later VRSC model motorcycles. Kit Contents There are no Service Parts available with this kit. INSTALLATION 1. Using a suitable lift, support the vehicle beneath the frame until the rear tire is just slightly off the ground. 2. See Figure 1. Remove the right side upper shock mounting bolt (2) and spacer (4). Retain the shock mounting nut (not shown) which passes through the fender support and side rail assembly. 3. Pivot the shock towards the vertical position. 4. Remove the left side lower shock mounting bolt (1) and washer (5). 5. Pivot the shock towards the horizontal position. 6. Insure that the shocks are clear of all components and carefully lower the vehicle to provide access to the right side lower shock bolt. 7. Support the right shock and remove the lower shock mounting bolt (1), washer (5) and nut (6). 8. Position the right side cover provided in the kit over the swingarm 9. Reposition the right side shock and re-install the lower shock mounting bolt (1) and washer (5) by inserting through the shock, cover and swingarm. Thread into nut (6) and tighten to 41-68 Nm (30-50 ft-lbs)

See Figure 3 and Table 1. INSTALLATION Shock Absorbers Perform this installation when the engine is cool. Working on or near the exhaust system when the engine is hot could result in severe burns. (00311a) Installation of any accessory suspension components can affect cornering clearance. This could distract the rider, causing loss of control and death or serious injury. (00431b) NOTES This procedure requires that both shocks be removed prior to installing the new shock absorbers. You need to place the motorcycle on a center stand with the rear wheel raised off of the ground. The jiffy stand should be able to move through its full range of travel. Block the motorcycle under the frame so that the motorcycle is securely resting upright, the jiffystand may be moved through its full range of travel, and rear wheel is just off the ground. 2. Remove the lower shock mounting screw (1), washer (3) and nut (6) from the shock absorber (7). Save the hardware for reuse. 3. Remove the upper bolt (2), washer (4) and cover (5) and remove the shock absorber. Save the hardware for reuse. 4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for opposite side and save the hardware. 5. Apply 2-3 drops of LOCTITE 243® (blue) on the threads of the lower mounting bolt, then install bolt, lower washer and nut to the shock. 6. Apply 2-3 drops of LOCTITE 243® (blue) on the threads of the upper mounting bolt, then install the shock cover, upper mounting bolt and washer to the shock. Verify the cutout in shock cover locates properly

1. Tire Pressure and Rotation : Keep the nominal tire pressure at about 20-25psig. It is not necessary to periodically rotate the trike tires unless you experience unusual tire wear. 2. Bearing Lubrication . Your Swing Arm, external differential and axle bearings are sealed and do not require greasing. However, should you experience unusual differential or axle bearing noise you should take your trike to a Champion Trike Dealer or to your motorcycle mechanic for a checkup. 3. Body Lubrication . There are no grease fittings on the trike body and no required body lubrication points. 4. Differential lubrication . Your differential is a sealed unit and comes filled with high-pressure grease. No maintenance is required. 5. Brakes . Check your brake system fluid level every 3,000 miles and top-off as necessary. Inspect rear disc brake pads every 10,000 miles and replace as necessary. Pads are Volkswagen Part # D101P 6. Drive Train . Inspect your drive belt as recommended in your motorcycle Owner’s Manual. When properly tensioned after the trike conversion, the belt should “deflect” about 1/2 to 5/8 inches when pressed with a force of 10 pounds. Do not use commercial belt dressing compounds on the belt: these compounds are designed for friction, not toothed, belts and can collect dirt and sand. 7. Suspension System. FLH/FLT : The suspension system retains your two OEM shocks and is designed to give you the best ride with a load of no more than 500 pounds (passengers plus cargo plus trailer tongue weight). Keep the air pressure in the shocks in the range of 30-70 psig: Softail (FLST) : The suspension system retains your single OEM shock and adds two coil-over “helper” mechanical shocks. The system is designed to give you the best ride with a load of no more than 500 pounds (passengers plus cargo plus trailer tongue weight). There is a pre-load adjuster ring on each new shock that is factory-set at the “lowest” setting, for the softest ride. Changing this setting will result in a stiffer ride. 8. EZ-Steer (rake kit) : If your trike is equipped with Champion’s EZ-Steer, the bearings are a wear item. You should follow your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended front-end triple-tree maintenance requirements. Generally these call for an initial service at 1,000 miles followed by periodic maintenance at 10,000 mile intervals.

SHOCK REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION– The shocks are fitted with special length spacers to maintain correct alignment between the frame and the swingarm. If the shocks are removed for service or repair, they must be installed in the correct position. Refer to the diagram on the next page for spacer positioning and layout. NOTE: Misalignment between the mounts on the frame and the mounts on the swingarm can cause binding between the shock shaft and shaft bushing. Misalignment of more than 1/4 inch can cause the shocks to bind up and not function properly. If this binding occurs, the shocks will feel overly stiff and harsh. Follow the procedures below to check for misalignment when installing the shocks. NOTE: The shock bushings are designed to have a certain side-to-side “float” to keep them from binding. As a result, do not grind or file the inner or outer edges of the bushings to make them narrower. The amount of “float” in the bushing set is necessary to ensure smooth operation of the damper assembly. If the shock eyes are tightened metal-to-metal (the outer faces of the eyes to the flanges or washers), this will lead to a harsh, stiff or choppy ride and premature seal leakage or damage to the shafts. MULTI-RATE SPRINGS Depending on each application, single or dual-rate springs are available. Dual-rate springs are just that– a spring set with two separate rates. This is done with a short spring stacked on a longer spring. As both springs compress they produce a soft, or initial, rate. The spring set will maintain this initial rate until the short spring stops compressing. At that point, the spring rate “crosses over” to the stiffer, or final, rate. This multi-rate system allows a soft initial rate for comfort on small bumps, but has the capability of soaking up the big pot-holes and other road hazards. PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT— On Works shocks, threaded preload is standard. (See Fig. 2.) This allows the adjustment of the ride height of the motorcycle. The preload is changed by turning a threaded nut down towards the spring (higher ride height) or up away from the spring (lower ride height). The nut is a right-hand thread. It is used primarily to set the ride height for solo riding, but can also be used when

Place the motorcycle on the centerstandor block the motorcycle securely so the rear wheel is slightly off the ground. 2. Remove the old shocks and note location of mount- inghardware. If additional accessories are installed on your motorcycle, please refer to their mounting instructions for removal to gain access to the shocks. Note: Steps (3-5) are only necessary if aftermarket fender, tire or any other accessories have been installed. If none of these applies, 18 Series proceed to step 5,418 Series proceed to step 6. Caution: Make sure that the proper bushings/sleeves are installed in the shocks. Improper bushings/sleeves can cause unsatisfactory or unsafe operation. Bushings: A universal hardware kit is included. Determine the proper sleeves and washers for mounting stud/bolt for your particular application. Not all parts will be used. 3. Install one shock (without spring) and check clearance (#Ain Fig. 1). Raise wheel into fender well until shock bottoms. There should bea minimumof1″of clearance between the tire and fender. 4. If clearance (#A) is sufficient, remove the shock and install the springs onto the shock (See Step 5). Caution: This step requires a spring compression tool from Progressive Suspension, (Part#32-5503). If a spring compression tool is not available, refer the work to your local dealer or repair shop. Attempting to compress the springs without the proper tool may result in serious injury or damage to the shock! 5. Spring Installation: A. Install tab cover and cam adjuster to the minimum setting (lowest point on preloadramps). See A figure 2. B. Install plastic body protector insuring that the protrusion seats into the cam adjuster. See Bfigure2. C. Install the spring. D. Install retaining ring above the spring. Make sure the circlipbevelis facing upward. Place the wirecirclip over the top eye sliding it close to the retaining ring. See Cfigure 2. E. Using a spring compressor tool, compress the spring enough to install wire circlipinthe groove. Slide the wire circlipdowninto the groove. Release the spring slowly, making sure the spring retainer ring seats fully on the wirecirclip. See Dfigure 2.

2004 CM shock valving REMOVAL

If you took receipt of your Cobra CM50 prior to April 22, 2004 the valving in the rear shock is incorrect causing excessive bottoming and bouncing of the rear end. The serial number of the shocks needing corrected is CO4940. Owners of 2004 model CM50s are being asked to send the shock to Öhlins USA, Inc. , at no charge, to receive the production intent valving. Please follow these steps when sending your shock with spring to Öhlins. 1. Remove the spring a. Clean the unit of dirt. b. Secure the end bushings in place with safety wire or ‘zip’ tie. c. Include your name and return address (indicate whether residential or business address)
