INSTALLATION Removing Turn Signals To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. (00307a) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a) 1. Remove the 40 amp Maxi-Fuse or disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first. Never touch the quartz bulb. Fingerprints will etch the glass and decrease bulb life. Grab the bulb with paper or a clean, dry cloth. Failure to do so could result in bulb damage. (00210a) 2. For VRSCA models, remove headlamp assembly. For VRSCB models, continue to Step 4. a. While facing the headlamp from behind (looking toward front of motorcycle), reach behind the headlamp bucket and twist the headlamp bulb approximately 45 degrees counterclockwise, then gently pull straight out of the headlamp. Repeat for remaining bulb. Temporarily secure bulbs out of the way for the following steps. b. See Figure 1. This kit is designed for 1986 and later FLSTC, FLST, FLSTF and FLSTN model motorcycles equipped with a windshield and/or passing lamps. If your FLST, FLSTC, FLSTF or FLSTN is equipped with a windshield but not a passing lamp assembly, you will need two washers 5/16 x 1 x 1/8 in. (HD Part Number 6645). These washers will be used as spacers for the bottom of the deflector. This kit is also designed to fit with accessory five gallon Fat Bob Gas Tanks. Installation 1. See Figures 1 and 2. On Rigid Mount Windshields, remove the bolts (1), lockwashers (2), and flat washers (3) securing one side of the windshield support bracket. Save all hardware for reinstallation. NOTE On Rigid Mount Windshields, be sure the large spacer (4) between the tip of the windshield support bracket and the fork stays in position. On Detachable Windshields, remove the bolts (1) and flat washers (2) securing one side of the windshield support bracket. Save all hardware for reinstallation. 2. Place the wind deflector in position and install the hardware removed in Step 1. Do not tighten the bolt at this time. NOTE On Rigid Mount Windshields, be sure you install the large spacer between the windshield support bracket and the fork. NOTE On 2000 and later models, be sure the wind deflector is outside of the windshield docking points. 3. Position the wind deflector parallel with the fork leg and install the other flat washers, lockwashers and bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time. NOTE If you have a motorcycle equipped with a windshield, but no passing lamps assembly, use the washer (6645) to space the deflector away from the fork leg. 4. Position the wind deflector so it does not touch the bottom of the windshield or the turn signal. The deflector bolt holes are slotted for th is purpose. 5. Installation 1. Place the saddlebags on the vehicle so the straps are positioned over the top of the passenger seat. 2. Lace saddlebags together. 3. Adjust the leather straps so the saddlebags ride high and fit snugly and evenly against the side of the seat. Top of saddlebags may be replaced to achieve snug fit. NOTE On some models, the rear turn signal lights may interfere with mounting of saddlebags. To correct this, a new directional set-back kit is available under part number 90504-82. This kit allows the rear signal lights to be mounted in the rear positions on the fender support, on 1982 and later FXR and XL models. Contact your Harley- Davidson Dealer to obtain this kit. If rear turn signal lights interfere with saddlebags, see your Harley-Davidson Dealer for a turn signal set-back kit. Proper turn signal operation and visibility is a major concern for motorcyclists. Failure to have visible, operational rear turn signals may result in death or serious injury. 4. The front securing straps must be fastened to a point on the motorcycle which is forward of the saddlebags, such as the upper shock mount or fender brace. Be certain the straps so not interfere with any moving parts. Improper positioning or fastening of these saddlebags could cause them to interfere with the operation of the vehicle, possibly causing a hazardous condition. The fastening straps and the saddlebags must be clear of the rear wheel, drive chain or belt, sprocket and rear brake components. Location of the saddlebags should not interfere with the operation of the swingarm and rear shocks and the turn signals should remain clearly visible from the rear and side of the vehicle. Improperly positioned or fastened saddlebags could interfere with the operation of the motorcycle, which could result in death or serious injury. 5. The rear securing straps must be fastened to a point which is rearward of the saddlebags such as the rear turn signal light support. 6. Check that saddlebags are mounted with ample clearance between the bags and the brake caliper and disc so they do not contact each other, even when the swingarm deflects under full load. 7. Once both saddlebags are mounted correctly, check all securing straps to be certain they are not interfering with or exposed to any moving parts. Tuck the tails of the leather straps underneath the portion of the straps that connect the two saddlebags. NOTE On some motorcycles, it will be necessary to mount the saddlebags over the outside surface of the rear shock. This is acceptable if all CAUTIONS and WARNINGS are observed
