Remove and discard seat post washer (2) and screw (3) from the front fender hole. 3. For XL883 and XL883L models: See Figure 2. Remove plastic cap (1) from rearward fender hole and save. 4. Installation 1. Remove exhaust system according to Service Manual instructions. 2. See Figure 1. Remove the outer primary screw shown and retain it for reinstallation. 3. See Service Parts Illustration. Insert the thread cleaning screw (9), through the primary cover and the crankcase until the full screw diameter protrudes through the crankcase. Remove any debris from from the tip of the thread cleaning screw. Remove thread forming screw and discard. NOTE If thread cleaning screw binds in crankcase hole, remove thread cleaning screw and chase threads with 1/4 – 20 tap. 4. Install set screw (8) from outer primary side using the wrench provided. Set screw should extend past the crankcase approximately .375″. 5. With wrench in set screw to prevent rotation, install the backplate over the set screw and fasten with the 1/4-20 nylock nut (5). 6. Reinstall the primary cover screw saved in Step 1. Torque to 80-110 in-lbs (9-12 Nm). 7. Remove the the oil hose clamp from the starter stud. Do not remove the clamp from the hoses. 8. Replace the original equipment starter stud with stud (7) provided. Torque to 39-65 in-lbs (4-7 Nm). 9. Install bracket (2) over stud (7) and fasten with #10-24 nylock nut (6). Rotate bracket until the tab on the bracket rests on starter motor. 10. Install oil hose clamp onto bracket (2) using one of the #10-24 screws (4). Tuck the hoses down as far as possible without contacting the drive belt or kinking the hose. Contacting the drive belt or kinking the hose may cause damage to the hoses or powertrain. 11. Install the cover (1) to the backplate (3) and bracket (2) using four of the #10-24 screws (4) with the wrench provided. The cover should fit inboard of the gear cover and partially on top of the sprocket cover. Start the bracket screw first, then follow with the (3) backplate screws. 12. Reinstall exhaust system according to Service Manual Instructions

This Chrome Igition Switch Cover fits all 2004 and later XL (Sportster®) model motorcycles. It is a direct replacement for the original equipment (OE) switch cover. NOTE There are no Service Parts available with this kit. Installation 1. See Figure 1. Remove the ignition switch face nut (3). NOTE To avoid damaging the fuel tank finish, lift the front of the tank to provide clearance for removing and installing the screw. 2. Remove the front mounting bolt on the fuel tank. 3. Remove the ignition cover mounting screw, then remove and discard the original ignition switch cover. 4. Place the chrome ignition switch cover in position, and install the original mounting screw. Tighten the screw to 3-7 ft-lbs (4-9 Nm). 5. Reinstall the front fuel-tank mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 8-16 ft-lbs (11-22 Nm). 6. INSTALLATION Perform this installation when the engine is cool. Working on or near the exhaust system when the engine is hot could result in severe burns. (00311a) NOTE XL Sportster 883 and XL1200R models may require loosening or removal of the rear muffler in order to install the right side rear axle cover. See the EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL section of the Service Manual. 1. Support the vehicle, and loosen or remove the rear muffler if necessary. XL Sportster 883 and XL1200R models: Remove the right-side lower shock absorber mounting bolt. Save for re-installation. All other models: Remove and discard the right-side lower shock absorber mounting bolt. 2. Swing the bottom of the shock absorber out of the way. Position the right-side swingarm axle cover (2) over the swingarm and behind the shock absorber. 3. Reposition the shock absorber. XL Sportster 883 and XL1200R models: Install the shock absorber mounting bolt removed in Step 1. All other models: Install the shoulder bolt (3) from the kit. All models: Tighten the bolt to 45-50 ft-lbs (61-68 Nm) . NOTE When torquing the bolt, align two of the bolt-head flats parallel to the ground. This will allow proper orientation of the bar and shield logo on the bolt cover. 4. Position the bolt cover (4) over the bolt head (3) with the Bar-and-Shield logo oriented upright, and lock in place with the set screw (5). Tighten securely. Reposition and tighten the muffler per the Service Manual instructions. 5. Remove and discard the left-side lower shock absorber mounting bolt. Move the bottom of the shock absorber out of the way. Position the left-side swingarm axle cover (2) over the swingarm and behind the shock absorber. 6. Reposition the shock absorber and install the shoulder bolt from the kit. Tighten to 45-50 ft-lbs (61-68 Nm) , aligning two of the bolt head flats parallel to the ground. 7. Position the bolt cover over the bolt head with the Bar-and- Shield logo oriented upright, and lock in place with the set screw. Tighten securely

INSTALLATION 1. Refer to the Owner’s Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat. 1 2 4 1 3 is03341 1. Stock retention nut and washer 2. Plastic cap 3. Rearward fender hole 4. Center fender hole Figure 1. Retention Nut and Plastic Cap Location 2. For models that had a solo seat: Proceed to Step 3. For models that had a 2-up seat: The retention nut and washer must be moved from the rearward mounting hole to the center fender hole where the rear seat bracket will be attached. Use a cable strap to aid in this step as fol- lows: a. See Figure 1. Remove retention nut from rearward fender hole (3) and plastic cap (2) from center fender hole (4). b. Install plastic cap into the rearward fender hole. c. See Figure 2. Place the retention nut over the cable strap so the wide end of the nut rests on the eye of the cable strap. Thread the cable strap up under the fender and through the center fender hole. Pull up on the cable strap to hold the nut snug against the underside of the fender. d. With the rib of the retention nut seated into the notch in the fender hole, slide the retention washer into place from the rear. This will lock the retention nut in place. 3. Position the solo seat on the motorcycle frame with the mounting bracket at the rear. Bring the seat forward and engage the tab on the seat into the slot at the base of the fuel tank. 4. See Figure 3. Secure the seat to the fender using the knurled knob (3) and neoprene washer (4) from the kit. Install the washer on the knob and tighten the knob securely to the fender seat nut

REMOVAL Remove Right and Left Forks 1. Place suitable blocking under frame to raise front wheel several inches off the floor. For best results, use a hydraulic center stand on a level surface. 2. Raise the vehicle on a motorcycle lift to allow access to the underside of the rear fender. 2. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the negative battery cable (earlier Dyna models) or Maxi® Fuse (all XL’s and later Dyna models). 3. Remove the license plate from the vehicle (if installed). Remove and discard the original equipment license-plate bracket and attaching hardware from the fender. Clean the mounting area on the fender with a soft, damp cloth. 4. See Figure 1. Remove the two screws securing the tail/stop lamp lens assembly, and remove the lens and bulb assembly. Depress the latch on the four-way tail/stop lamp connector (1), and disconnect the connector from the circuit board. 5. Depress the latches on the left-side (2) and right-side (3) two-way turn signal connectors, and disconnect the connectors from the circuit board. 6. Remove the turn signal wires from the retention clips under the fender.

INSTALLATION For models WITH maxi-fuse: To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove maxi-fuse before proceeding. (00251a) 1. Refer to the Owner’s Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and maxi-fuse. Retain all seat mounting hardware. For models WITHOUT maxi-fuse: To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a) NOTE For 2004 and later XL (Sportster®) models, the negative battery cable is most easily disconnected at the engine crankcase . 1. Refer to the Owner’s Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the negative (black) battery cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Retain all seat mounting hardware. NOTE Figure 1 shows the original equipment tail/stop lamp mounted to a full fender. The lamp is rotated 180° when mounted to a Bobtail fender. 2. See Figure 1. Loosen the two Phillips head screws (2) retaining the tail/stop lamp assembly (1) to the lamp base (3), and pull the lamp assembly away from the base. 3. These kits fit all 2004 and later XL Sportster® model motorcy- BRAKE LEVER INSTALLATION Removing the Brake Lever Do not remove or install the master cylinder assembly without first positioning a 5/32-inch (4 mm) thick insert between the brake lever and lever bracket. Removing or installing the master cylinder assembly without the insert in place may result in damage to the rubber boot and plunger on the front stoplight switch. (00324a) is 01010 Figure 1. 5/32 in. (4 mm) Cardboard Insert 1. See Figure 1. Squeeze the brake lever and place the cardboard insert between the brake lever and lever bracket. NOTE Use the eyelet of an ordinary cable strap if the cardboard insert is not available. Wear safety glasses or goggles when removing or installing retaining rings. Retaining rings can slip from the pliers and could be propelled with enough force to cause serious eye injury. (00312a) 2. See Figure 2. Remove retaining ring from pivot pin groove at bottom of master cylinder bracket. Save the pivot pin for re-use, discard the retaining ring. 3. Remove pivot pin and brake hand lever from master cylinder assembly. NOTE Do not remove the handlebar clamp or switch housing assembly to remove the brake lever. Installing the Brake Lever NOTE Follow the instructions in Steps 4 and 5 carefully in order to prevent the actuating tab on the brake lever from damaging the rubber boot and plunger of the front stoplight switch
